********************************************************************** Final Science Report (Summary of Research), Data Services Continuation : Resident Archive Services of the Yohkoh Legacy data Archive. NNX14AK35G (2014.6.10 through 2015.6.9) Aki Takeda (PI) and Keiji Yoshimura and Loren Acton (co-PIs) (Montana State University) ********************************************************************** We have provided our resident archive (RA) services since 2009, with the continuous support by NASA over the following three grants (NNX09AH64G, NNX12AG78G, and NNX14AK35G). We proudly report that we have finished up our final year of RA contract with satisfactory results, some of which are due to collaboration with external projects (see item 5 for details). This final report covers our achievement for the period, 1-Apr-2014 to 9-Jun-2015, the last year of support from NASA via the grant NNX14AK35G. The work we proposed in the proposal and the achievement we made are as follows. (1) Keep our products well maintained and store them in a place users can access in a convenient and comfortable manner. From the period April 2014 through May 2015, the YLA web interface collects 300-400 unique visitors per month (Appendix 1). These numbers are after removal of internal access (inside MSU) and that of several known search-engine robots. We also removed the access to the top page only and the access without proper referrer to eliminate the access unintended to use our contents. The major destinations of the visitors are documentation and other informational pages, followed by the page making use of the customized movie and daily jpeg image archive. At least 5 scientific papers were published for the period, Jan-2014 through Jun-2015 (as listed in Appendix 2). (2) Provide users individual assistance for accessing and handling data (the E-consultant service). Our E-consultant service has received 2 consultations, one of them was oversea. The "I" indicates inquiry, same as the previous reports. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 25-Jun-2014 & Indian Institute of Technology, India. & I 20-Feb-2015 & private company, US domestic & I ---------------------------------------------------------------------- (3) Prepare documentation on the archive and new calibration. "On-Orbit Performance and Calibration of the Soft X-ray Telescope on Yohkoh", by Loren Acton was submitted in April 2015 to a refereed journal, Solar Physics. It was accepted for publication in June 2015. This paper discusses in detail on the following topics. - Yohkoh attitude control and SXT pointing reliability, - SXT aspect sensor (white-light telescope) performance, - SXT entrance filter failure and stray visible light correction, - SXT sensitivity calibration, - CCD performance. The PDF file of this paper is found at the following URL. http://ylstone.physics.montana.edu/ylegacy/documents/publication/YLA_SXTcalibration.pdf Re-calculation of SXT response functions with the latest atomic database. SXT's temperature response to a model solar radiation is an elemental factor to conduct quantitative analysis with SXT data. It is important to keep it up with the latest atomic data, which have effect on a solar spectral model. In 2015, the SXT response functions were re-calculated using the latest CHIANTI atomic database version 7.1.4. The Yohkoh/SXT software for deriving temperatures were accordingly updated to access the new response functions. Those new response functions and updated software are available from the SolarSoft standard software tree: $SSW/yohkoh/sxt/response, and $SSW/yohkoh/gen/galileo/idl/lmsal/, respectively. (5) Injection of the YLA products to general archive/data-search services. Following our collaboration with the HelioViewer project in 2014, the Yohkoh products became available from the following three popular external archives: ----------------------------------------- Heliophysics Event Knowledgebase(HEK) : ----------------------------------------- The HEK (http://www.lmsal.com/hek/index.html) is an integrated metadata system of interesting solar events and features, designed to assist users find data sets relevant for their interest. In May 2015, the flare events included in our two flare catalogs (Yohkoh/HXT/SXT/WBS, Yohkoh/BCS) were injected to the HEK. We owe much of this achievement to the proficient work by Dr. Ryan Timmons (the HEK team at Lockheed Martin). An example page can be reached by the search of the flare events occurred on 1991/12/15 from the above HEK page: You can see the Yohkoh HXT, BCS, and GRS flare events (and symbolic links to our flare catalog at MSU) from the result page. ------------------------------------------------ SolarMonitor (http://www.solarmonitor.org/) : ------------------------------------------------ We contacted the SolarMonitor team in 2013 to make our daily SXT full-sun images available from their historical pages from 1996 (start of the SOHO mission) to 2001 (end of the Yohkoh mission). In late 2013, we provided the SolarMonitor team with SXT daily level3 FITS images in accordance with their filename convention and data structure. After some blank period, in 2015, the our full-sun images and their cutout for Active Regions are finally on-lined from the SolarMonitor pages. Essential work to adapt SXT images to SolarMonitor system was achieved by Dr. David Perez-Suarez (the SolarMonitor team at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland). An example page is found at: http://www.solarmonitor.org/index.php?date=20000608®ion=&indexnum=1 http://www.solarmonitor.org/index.php?date=20000608®ion=09026 ------------------------------------------------ Solar Data Analysis Center (SDAC) at NASA : ------------------------------------------------ Subsequent to the transfer of the YLA basic data (SXT level_1 to level_3 products) to the SDAC in March 2014, we prepared the "Redacted version of YLA" and transfered to the SDAC in June 2015. This redacted YLA is a suite of html-based web pages with the symbolic links to the data (including the YLA basic data) and document directories. It is essentially the same as the original YLA web site, but the interacting web services (e.g., data search, movie maker, etc) and some auxiliary data are eliminated in order to minimize the maintenance work at the SDAC. The redacted YLA is designed to serve as the "final archive" of Yohkoh data, which is supposed to be stored at the SDAC under NASA's Heliophysics Science Data Management Policy. Joseph Hourcle at SDAC generously devoted his time for data transfer from MSU and adaptation to the SDAC system. The URL at the SDAC is as follows. http://umbra.nascom.nasa.gov/yohkoh/ We will be maintaining the original YLA site at Montana State University (http://ylstone.physics.montana.edu/ylegacy/) as long as the resource continues to be available. However, the priority of the maintenance work (e.g., software/database update and user responses) will be lowered. ********************************************************************** == Appendix 1. == Monthly total of the number of daily unique users who accessed at least one of the YLA pages (1-Jan-2014 through 31-May-2015). ===================================================================== Jan.
