SSOC Tohban Report for Week 48, 1993 (30 November - 05 December 1993) L. Harra, K.Hayashi (SSOC) Y. Suematsu, S.Watari (KSC) 1. Solar Activity The solar activity is again low, with the largest flare being C9.7. There were 37 flares greater than B2. 2. Standard Operations SXT Table Loads: 931128 T1 P2 DEEP CORONA 931128 T2 P4 ARS1 STD 931129 T1 P2 ARS0 BP/PFI 931129 T2 P4 ARS1 DKCAL 931130 T2 P4 ARS1 STD 931202 T1 P2 ARS0 BP/PFI-2 931202 T2 P4 ARS1 STD 931203 T1 P2 ARS0 BP/PFI-2 (loaded in Pass 3) 931203 T2 P4 ARS1 STD 2.2 STT Timer Set The STT timer was set on Nov.30 (Tues) and on Dec. 3 (Fri) was stopped due to an eclipse of Canopus. 3. Special Operations This week there was a special bright point observing campaign conducted with Kitt Peak, BBSO, and Mees. Karen Harvey was the coordinator and she selected the coordinates for observations. The SXT observed in thin Al in a coronal hole region in PFI dominant mode between Passes 2 and 4 on JST Tuesday, Friday, and between Passes 3 and 4 on Saturday (JST). The KSC, SSOC and SXT Chief Observer all had to work harder than normal to facilitate this campaign. There was a problem with the SXT table loading program on Saturday which caused a delay of the SXT table load until Pass 3. 4. DSN Items 4.1 Data DOY319 2216-2225 have not yet arrived, and we have asked for it several times, as did last weeks SSOC tohbans. 4.2 Due to the shuttle launch, all of the DSN passes for Sat and Sun have been cancelled, and only one pass for Friday was permitted. We also are expecting passes next week to be cancelled. It seems that YOHKOH is in almost the same orbit as the shuttle. The ASCA satellite has retained most of its passes this time. 5. Problems 5.1. Power Outage on Sunday. There was a power outage at ISAS on Sunday. As a result, we were not able to conduct a campaign that was already agreed to with ground observers. 5.2. There were problems with the Flare11 workstation in Yohkoh operations room in B-tou, connected with a small current leak (700 mAmp) in the circuit used to supply power to Flare11. As the problem was being investigated, the Flare11 keyboard failed. On Thursday, JPL was asked to change the RASM call-back number to D-tou, and isass4 was used to transfer RASM files. By Friday, Flare11 was again working and call-back number was restored to B-tou. Many thanks to Lemen-san and Hara-san for their assistance with this. 5.3. Mainframe/Temporary Sirius Data transfer problem. On Wednesday the temporary Sirius data was not created automatically on the Mainframe computer, despite the fact that both Mainframes 1 and 2 were up and running at the time of the KSC contacts. H. Hara investigated the problem with NEC and was told that the Yohkoh data was transferred to the SSOC with ASCA data headers, and so, was not recognized properly. For some reason, this was not fixed and the problem reoccurred on Thursday. This made the planning operations for the SXT Chief Observer very difficult as a result, especially in light of the special operations and the timing of the KSC contacts occurring in the early morning hours. 5.4. Mons Morrison has discovered that the GOES 3 sec automatic data copying stopped working on 22 Nov 1993. Mons Morrison sent a message to SEL and found out that one of their computers was re-booted but that the automatic copy program was not restarted. We are currently missing GOES 3 sec data from approximately 22-Nov 18:00 to 1-Dec 18:00 UT. A request has been made for the missing data. 5.5. On Saturday (JST) the SXT table loading/verifying program (sxtspt) could not be run by either the KSC Tohbans or the SXT Chief Observer. KSC called H. Hara at 2:30 AM for advice. We could log into main- frame #1 but sxtspt would not start. Later Akebono operators had the same difficulty and contacted a Fujitsu engineer who reset mainframe 1. We were lucky that the Fujitsu engineer was available and that the Akebono operators knew how to contact him. Because of this difficulty, we were only able to run the special BP campaign between Passes 3 and 4. 6. Calibrations A BCS stim calibration was carried out on 1 Dec on pass 4, and the source calibration was carried out on 1-Dec between passes 4 and 5. An HXT calibration is due to be carried out today in pass 2. 7. New Campaigns On 5 December, Tim Bastian and Co-I's Nitta and Hudson will observe with the VLA. The objective of the run will be flares. As it turns out, the timing of the observations will correspond to the Yohkoh's early Monday morning operations. 8. Hikitsugi 8.1 Week 49 Tohbans: SSOC: Yoshimura, Suga KSC: Watanabe_H, Suematsu 8.2 STT timer The next setting should be done on Dec 9 (Thurs). 8.3 Next week's tohbans should be on the lookout for DSN passes being cancelled this week as we had not yet received the final schedule on Sat for week 49. Also they should confirm that the HXT calibration has been carried out successfully.
