SSOC TOBAN REPORT FOR WEEK 22 (30 May - 6-June 1994) SSOC: B. LaBonte and T. Yoshida KSC: M. Shimojo and M. Ohyama 1. SOLAR ACTIVITY ---------------------------------------- Solar activity was very low last week. There were only 2 B-class flares. The GOES background level is now below the instrumental limit. 2. STANDARD OPERATIONS ---------------------------------------- 2.1 SXT table uploads Date (UT) Pass Pass ID Table ID --------- ---- ----------- ---------------------- May 31 2 940531-0411 940531 P2 FIX CE OBS-8 Jun 1 2 940601-0308 940601 P2 FIX CE OBS-9 Jun 2 2 940602-0309 940602 P2 FIX CE OBS-10 Jun 3 2 940603-0206 940603 P2 FIX CE OBS-11 Jun 4 2 940604-0207 940604 P2 FIX FILAMENT SXT tables were uploaded frequently because dark spikes prevented operation of the ARS. 2.2 STT timer set STT Timer was turned off on May 31 (Tues.) as Canopus went continuous eclipse. 2.3 QUIET RATE MEDIUM in SAA QUIET RATE MEDIUM/HIGH commands have been manually added to OPs. At this time the SAA occurs mostly at night, so only a few minutes per day were effected. 3. SPECIAL OPERATIONS ---------------------------------------- The chromospheric ejection campaign, led by Brigitte Schmieder, continued last week. A BEARALERT on June 2 predicted a filament eruption. The SXT Table was prepared to monitor that filament. There was no spacecraft offpoint last week. 4. ERRORS AND PROBLEMS ---------------------------------------- 4.1 CANCEL_DSN / OP_FIRST_GUESS printouts The problem with Portrait/Landscape printing when using CANCEL_DSN that was reported at the last operations meeting was fixed by Lemen. 4.1 FLARE 5 DISK FULL The disk on Flare5, the KSC workstation, completely filled this week. The program to autmatically delete old SXT data did not work. The old data was deleted manually. This made room for the new realtime data. 5. DSN COMMUNICATIONS ------------------------------------------ 5.1 DSN schedule delivery Final for Week 23 and Strawman for Week 25 were delivered on time. Preliminary for Week 24 was delivered one day early. 5.2 Re-transmission request On June 1 we again asked for the retransmission of the same 4 datasets that Sakao-san requested in Week 21. We received no reply. Katano-san will have to check if these data were retransmitted. 5.3 DSN e-mail addresses We received no answer to Sakao-san's question concerning DSN email addresses. The addresses in flare1/.mailrc for the alias "dsn" appear to be valid; the addreses in the alias "dsn1" are not valid, and they all fail. 6. YOHKOH/ASCA PASS CONFLICTS --------------------------------- There was one pass conflict in week 22, on June 2. Yohkoh had only 4 passes that day. In week 23 there is 1 conflict, on Saturday June 11. Yohkoh will have only 4 passes on that day. This was negotiated at SSOC; the KSC tohbans at first thought there were 2 conflicts, but that was not correct. Hara-san's program works very well to identify potential conflicts, but care must be used to interpret the output. 1) On days with 6 valid passes (elevation > 10 degrees), conflict on the last pass is not a problem. 2) Conflicts with invalid passes (elevation < 10 degrees) are not a problem. 3) Conflicts on the KSC holiday are not a problem. 4) At this time, conflicts at DSN contacts are not a problem. 5) The minimum time to switch between spacecraft is 15 minutes. The KSC tohbans thought there was a conflict because there were 24 minutes from the end of the ASCA contact to the begining to the YOHKOH pass. Rule number 5 should be discussed. On June 11 the situation is: YOHKOH PASS 14 minutes duration Free time 10 minutes duration ASCA PASS 12 minutes duration We lose this pass because there are only 10 minutes between spacecraft. Should we keep this pass and end it 5 minutes early to avoid the conflict? Discussions with the KSC and ASCA staff would help to resolve this question. 7. YOHKOH OPERATIONS MEMORY ---------------------------------------- This week there was uncertainty about the timing of OP commands. There were discussions of the RB HV RDCT ON/OFF commands, the DSN Antenna A/B and B/A commands (which I have experienced before), and the SXT CNTL AUT commands for Terminator images. The printed manuals, especially at KSC, are sometimes incomplete, out of date, or lack important details. This uncertainty can be resolved by either: 1) Blind faith in OP_FIRST_GUESS. 2) Put the Tohban manual and the documents explaining the commands and their timing online. Another workstation is being sent to KSC. If it has IDL, perhaps the various emails and manuals can be installed and a program such as XDOC used to find and access them. As less experienced people perform the tohban duties, we cannot depend as much on the memories of the individuals, but must use more written memory. 8. HIKITSUGI ITEMS 8.1 Tobans for week 23 (June 6 - June 13 1994) SSOC: K. Morimoto and T. Matsuda KSC: M. Ohyama and K.Yaji 8.2 STT timer set Timer should be set as soon as possible. It should be out of eclipse. 8.3 Yohkoh/ASCA pass conflicts Please consult with Nagase san (rm. 1611, ex. 2611). At present, it is SSOC toban's job to negotiate with ASCA people for the next week schedule. End of report
