---Hara report---------------------------------------------------
Date: Sat, 22 Oct 94 18:14:53 JST
From: Hirohisa Hara
Dear SXT,
(1) A failure of SXT Halt OG
We tried to use the SXT Halt OG in the midnight of Oct 20 because
the SXT table which includes long exposures of 40 sec was not changed
into one for the synoptic campaign. The situation happened because of
the mis- or lack of communications between ISAS (super toban, chief
observer and SSOantobans) and KSC tobans for the SXT table change. SXT
table was planned to chnage twice on that day. ISAS side thought that
they would send the second table by themselves because the second
table change in a day is usually done by KSC people, but KSC side were
waiting for the second table by the end of the last KSC pass. KSC
people called several times to ISAS to look for the SXT chief
observer, but they could not catch him. Someone who received the phone
call told KSC tobans that they should cancel the second SXT table
change. KSC people followed the advice. Just after finishing all the
passes on that day, Kano san found in the last gbo-mail in the
midnight that KSC people didn't change the SXT table. Kano san knew
that the first SXT table included a long exposure of 40 sec, so he
called Hara (one of super tobabs) and Yoshida (one of ISAS tobans in
the week) to Tsuneta's office. Since we had six contacts on that day,
we began to prepare the commands to stop the SXT at the sixth pass.
Hara proposed to use ROG 46H (SXT Halt OG), but it was not tested
during the night time of the satellite. The rotating shutter of the
SXT is opened during the satellite night because of the preparation
for annealing the CCD for several minutes just after the satellite
enters the satellite day. At the sixth pass, the satellite would come
to KSC station in the night mode. The SXT shutter would be opened. ROG
46H does not include a command of SHUTTER CLOSE. In order to halt SXT
operation, a command of shutter close was necessary. Parallel to
making command plans at the sixth pass, the fraction of the time of
shutter open, that is, how long the SXT shutter is going to be opened
in an orbit was calculated from the SXT table in-orbit. The total
time was about twice of the time of the normal operation. We decided
that we should do nothing. We preferred not to use SXT HALT OG,
because it had revealed that it was not fully tested to any case.
Although KSC people prepared for the sixth pass, the operation was
cancelled.
(2) The result of the SXT halt Operation on 29-Sep-94 at 3rd contact
This test was done during the day at KSC. The object of this test
was to confirm that the SXT does not run in any case if we use the SXT
Halt OG. Sometimes OP includes SXT CTL AUTO for the purpose of taking
terminator images or campaign observations. In that case, even if we
stop the SXT observation to protect the SXT to be safe from an
emergency by SXT CTL MANU at KSC, SXT runs by a command of SXT CTL
AUTO in OP. SXT Halt OG makes an artificial error to SXT not to run
even after SXT CTL AT comes by OP.
The following shows how the SXT responded to the ROG 46H.
1. (SXT runs normally.)
status of SXT just before the SXT CTL MAN by ROG 46H.
filter A/B = 1/3, shutter = "CLOSE", err_flag = no error
SXT DAY = DAY, DP_MODE = QT-H, SXT_CTL = AUTO, PWR_CTL = AUTO
2. ROG 46H (SXT HALT OG)
status of SXT just after sending ROG 46H.
filter A/B = 1/3, shutter = "CLOSE",
err_flag = error (INVALID MBOX ACCESS)
SXT DAY = DAY, DP_MODE = QT-H, SXT_CTL = MAN, PWR_CTL = AUTO
3. SXT CTL AT
filter A/B = 1/6, shutter = "CLOSE",
err_flag = error (INVALID MBOX ACCESS)
SXT DAY = DAY, DP_MODE = QT-H, SXT_CTL = MAN, PWR_CTL = AUTO
Filters moved from A/B = 1/3 to 1/6(for QT PAT), and the shutter
was still closed.
4. Yobi-C (Error status clear)
err_flag = no error
SXT DAY = DAY, DP_MODE = QT-H, SXT_CTL = AUTO, PWR_CTL = AUTO
### SXT runs correctly. ###
From this test we learned several things.
(a) We can stop the SXT observation until we send Yobi-C command.
(b) SXT CTL AT which comes after ROG 46H makes setups for the
first patrol image, but the exposure is prohibited by the error
status (INVALID MBOX).
We didn't take care of the safety of the SXT CCD to this halt
operation, so the status of the shutter was not taken care of
especially. On Oct 20, we could not use ROG 46H because of the safety
of the SXT CCD. In order to know what commands are necessary including
night-time operation, the second Halt operation during the night was
done on Oct 21.
(3) The result of the SXT halt Operation on 21-Oct-94 at 3rd contact
1. SXT did not take images because of the ACS-H mode.
status of SXT just before the SXT CTL MAN by ROG 46H.
filter A/B = 3/1, shutter = "OPEN", err_flag = no error
SXT DAY = DAY, DP_MODE = ACS-H, SXT_CTL = AUTO, PWR_CTL = AUTO
2. ROG 46H (SXT HALT OG)
status of SXT just after sending ROG 46H.
filter A/B = 3/1, shutter = "OPEN",
err_flag = error (INVALID MBOX ACCESS)
SXT DAY = DAY, DP_MODE = ACS-H, SXT_CTL = MAN, PWR_CTL = AUTO
The shutter was still opened.
3. Manu FL-H (It was simulated that the day had come. We didn't
use MANU QT_H because of taking into account of QT-ARS.)
4. SXT CTL AT
filter A/B = 1/4, shutter = "CLOSE",
err_flag = error (INVALID MBOX ACCESS)
SXT DAY = DAY, DP_MODE = FL-H, SXT_CTL = MAN, PWR_CTL = AUTO
Filters moved from A/B = 3/1 to 1/4, and the shutter was closed.
5. ACS MOD H
6. Yobi-C (Error status clear)+ BC 84H 03H 13H(A/B =1/4->3/1,
which was not necessary.)
filter A/B = 3/1, shutter = "CLOSE", err_flag = no error
SXT DAY = DAY, DP_MODE = ACS-H, SXT_CTL = AUTO, PWR_CTL = AUTO
### SXT recovered normally. ###
From this test we learned several things.
(a) The SXT shutter was still opened after sending ROG 46H. This
command makes SXT to go to dangerous situations when we use
this command during the KSC night. The command of shutter
close is necessary in Halt OG.
(b) SXT CTL AT which comes after ROG 46H makes setups for the
first patrol image, and the shutter was closed before
detecting the INVALID MBOX error, but the exposure is
prohibited by the error status (INVALID MBOX).
######################################################################
My conclusion is as follows.
1. The current SXT HALT OG is dangerous to SXT CCD. Two block commands
are necessary after the SXT CTL MANU in Halt OG..
BC 84H 02H 01H (SXT DAY)
BC 84H 00H 01H (Shutter Close)
2. Yobi-C command can recover SXT from the SXT Halt status in any case
(except for SEU-related problems).

If you have any comment and suggestion, send me an e-mail.

Hara

From: Ryouhei Kano
Subject: the second SXT table
Dear All,
The rehearsal for the Walker rocket flight was done during
from the first contact at KSC to the third contact. The special
SXT table for the flight was uploaded in the first contact.
This table includes the long exposure (47 sec exposure) images.
In the fourth contact of today, we planed to return to the
previous SXT table which is for the synoptic observation.
Noticing (just before the fourth contact?) that this SXT
table had not arrived yet, KSC tobans canceled the SXT table
upload in this contacts. This is because of miss-communication
between KSC tobans and SXT chief observer.
Because KSC tobans informed this situation only by a GBO-mail,
we, the SXT J-side group (Tsuneta, Hara, Shimizu, Kano and
Yoshida), have not noticed until just before the fifth contact.
We tried to operate in the sixth KSC contact, and to stop
the SXT observation by SXT Halt OG. Comparing the SXT table for
the rocket flight and the recent tables, we concluded that
the table for the rocket flight is not much harmer than the
recent tables, and decided to cancel the additional operation
of the sixth contact.
Now, SXT works though the table for the rocket flight.
This table will be changed at the first pass of tomorrow.
Today, at least three problems appeared.
(1) During the special operation, at least one of the
experts supports KSC tobans from the operation room in
Sagamihara.
(2) Chief observer should not better to ask KSC tobans to
transfer the SXT table, unless the KSC contact is midnight.
When you ask KSC tobans this task, you should make sure
of your request to KSC tobans directly.
(3) KSC tobans should make contact with one of experts (SXT
super tobans, Chief observers ...) directly.

From: Saku Tsuneta
Subject: SXT table update error
Dear SXT,
The mis-operation of SXT table update for the Walker collaboration
rehearsal is potentially serious one.
The standard table to return to the normal operation was not updated,
and the long exposures (about 40 sec) fast cadence remained in the FFI
table. Around 9 pm, Kano kun found this from GBO mail, and asked KSC
for '6-th path' operation. '6-th path' operation was not easy,
because there was no AOS S/C wake-up OG before entering KSC, and we
prepared the blind command sequence to wake up S/C at midnight, because
the bit-rat was low, and the direction of the antenna was opposite.
At the same time, the total exposure times over one night was calculated,
and we found that it was not excessive. The '6-th path' operation was
cancelled about 10 minutes before the pass around mid-night.
Saku Tsuneta
Dear SXT-J,
Please keep in mind the following to avoid the sloppy operation:
1. When we have special operation, at least one qualified SXT-J personnel
should be at ISAS with SXT chief observer. There was no SXT personnel
at ISAS when this problem occurred. Hara san will arrange this in J-side.
2. Recently many third generation Yohkoh people serve as the tobans.
Assume that SSOC toban and KSC toban know nothing about SXT, unless
you personally confirm that the toban is qualified person. They upload
the tables, not understanding what the tables are! FAX or e-mail communi-
cation may not be satisfactory. Please call them in non-standard operation.
3. Your English messages are sometimes hard to understand. Please do not
send e-mail reports without your full proof-corrections when not urgent.
Also, it is sometimes not easy to understand what has happened from the
reports. Please try to give the full-details. I am afraid if it is hard to
understand why SXT HALT operation test is repeated to people located in
far away, and this was not discussed with Freeland san beforehand.
4. SXT-J spokesperson is Hara san. He has the responsibility of taking
care of these, communicates well with SXT chief observer as well as our
at-ISAS colleagues, and send proper reports to let everyone understand
the situation unless SXT chief observer can do this.
Thanks.
Saku Tsuneta
