SSOC Tohban Report for Week 08 ( 20 Feb - 26 Feb 1995) SSOC: AKITA, K., FUJIKI, K., and WEBER, M. KSC : KUMAGAI, K., and SHIMIZU, T. 1. Solar Activity ------------------------------------------------------------ Solar activity was moderate in week 08, peaking sometime around Monday morning. The GOES X-ray level hovered near ~B1 for the first part of the week, and then tapered off towards the end. NOAA 7843 lived up to expect- ations by producing several C-class events; however, it was NOAA 7844 that produced this week's M-level (M1.1) event (Feb. 20, 3:21 UT). Most of week 08's C-class events occurred just prior to the M-class event. (~Feb. 19, 12:00 to3:00 UT). 2. Special Operations ------------------------------------------------------- None. 4. Errors & Problems -------------------------------------------------------- 4.1 SXT and BCS errors. None. 4.2 Problems Friday afternoon the MS-175 machine overheated, which prevented the SSOC tohbans from submitting OP/OG's to KSC, and prevented the SXT Chief Observer from submitting SXT Table Uploads. The SXT Chief Observer was notified. The machine was repaired Friday evening, and the KSC tohbans were able to download the SXT Tables Saturday morning. The SSOC tohbans discovered that it may not be possible to run OP_FIRST_GUESS through the week to Sunday if the database has not been extended recently. This job has been requested by the SXT Chief Observer to generate required terminator files for a planned terminator offpoint- ing campaign. In this case, the SSOC tohbans should run OP_FIRST_GUESS for as much of the week possible, and complete the job when the database is updated. (See also 8.6, under "Terminators".) IDL program DSN_CHECK: See 8.3, under "Wallops - Support Software". OP_FIRST_GUESS is not modified yet to handle Wallops station contacts. Although one Wallops contact was initially scheduled for this weekend, we cancelled it in order to avoid a possible misoperation, which would cause a significant data loss over the weekend. 5. DSN Communications ------------------------------------------------------ 5.1 DSN Strawman Schedule for W11 We cancelled a total of 10 DSN contacts from the schedule. 5.2 DSN Forecast Schedule for W10 We cancelled a total of 0 (zero) DSN contacts from the forecast schedule. 5.3 DSN Final Schedule for W09 There was one cancellation for W09. (see 4.) 5.4 DSN Final Schedule for W08 We cancelled 0 (zero) DSN contacts from the final schedule. 6. Yohkoh/ASCA Pass Conflicts at KSC --------------------------------------- In week 08, we lost the following six KCS passes due to pass conflicts with ASCA: 950218-1548 (4th pass of Feb.18, from 23:43 UT) 950218-0103 (5th pass of Feb.18, from 1:26 UT) 950222-0102 (4th pass of Feb.21, from 0:32 UT) 950223-0102 (4th pass of Feb.22, from 0:51 UT) 950223-1547 (3rd pass of Feb.23, from 23:27 UT) 950224-0103 (4th pass of Feb.23, from 1:11 UT) 7. Holiday Schedule ------------------------------------------------------- The next operational holiday will be on Sunday, March 5. 8. Hikitsugi Items -------------------------------------------------------- 8.1 Tohbans for Week 09 KSC : Shimizu, Muranaka SSOC : Akita, K., and Shibata, K. 8.2 STT timer setting The next STT timer set is due on Tuesday (28-Feb-95). 8.3 Wallops station - Support software - The IDL program DSN_CHECK suffers a case mismatch error which the SSOC tohbans believe is due to an unrecognized ID number for the Wallops station --> 76. This program is used to generate the weekly DSN data log. For week09, the SSOC tohbans "wrote" (i.e. copied DSN_CHECK) a temporary program which gave "W?" for case-76, so that a check sheet could be generated. However, a more permanent adjustment to the software should be made once the error has been identified with certainty. - Downlink at Wallops - This week's (W09) tohbans have to deal with Wallops contacts in real-time ops. As this is the first time for Wallops to be used by Yohkoh/ASCA, we should be careful in using the Wallops station. Downlinks at Wallops need to be sufficiently backed up by other appropriate DSN stations (usually Goldstone) so that possible failure in data receiving at Wallops would give minimum impact on the observations. After we fully examine the downlinked data, Wallops will be used as a `regular' DSN station. 8.4 DSN Data: There is no delay. 8.5 GBO mailing list Nothing to report. 8.6 Terminators We should make the best of all possible terminator opportunities. Every THURSDAY, after the new orbital elements have come in, the SSOC tohbans should run OP_FIRST_GUESS for the next 7 days, so that the terminator predictions will be available for use by the SXT Chief Observer. End of report.
