SSOC Tohban Report for Week 19, 1996 (7 May - 13 May 1996) SSOC: H. Hudson and G. Slater KSC: K. Yoshimura and T. Ishii 0. Meeting Attendants ---------------- Savy, Slater, Shimojo, Nitta, Wang, Sterling, Sawa, Magara, Hara (chair), Ogawara, Hudson 1. Solar Activity ---------------- The region responsible for the CME is big, beautiful, and complicated, but has not continued to make many flares (5 C-class events as of 11-May). Other excitement this week was the arrival of a legitimate new-cycle active region, ie one with spots. Yohkoh is seeing it at about N28 on 11-May. It is (remember this!) AR 7963. It is a prime region. A "Patalert" from Pat Mcintosh was received 11-May suggesting some possibility of M flares, and another on 12-May. In fact there were no M-flares over the weekend, but there were many small, fast sub-C events. 2. Standard Operation ---------------- 2.1 SXT table uploads Date(JST) Pass Table ID ------------------------------------------------------------------- Monday 6-MAY-96 No Table Load Tuesday 7-MAY-96 12:56 1 960507 P1 ARS1 DKCAL 18:05 4 960507 P4 ARS1 STD+LONG Wednesday 8-MAY-96 No Table Load Thursday 9-MAY-96 No Table Load Friday 10-MAY-96 12:10 2 960510 P2 ARS1 STD+LONG Saturday 11-MAY-96 4 Cancelled because of SXT error ------------------------------------------------------------------- 2.2 STT timer setting The STT timer was set during pass 4 on 10-May (JST). The STT timer should be set during pass 2 on 17-May (JST). 3. Errors and Problems ---------------- 3.1 SXT errors SXT bit map error 6-May, detected and recovered on pass 1. SXT bit map error 9-May, detected and recovered on pass 4. SXT bit map error 11-May, detected and recovered on pass 1. SXT SEU 11-May, detected on pass 4 and recovered on pass 5. This caused the planned table write for pass 4 to be cancelled. 3.2 BCS errors BCS error 6-May, detected on pass 1 and recovered on pass 2. 3.3 OP management error On 11-May, the SSOC tohbans found an OP STOP on pass 2. The plan and the faxed OP called for the OP to continue through pass 4, so that the weekend OP could start on pass 3. They successfully managed this glitch. This very serious missed operation was due to carelessness in operation of the OPOGEDT program by the SSOC tohban. The standard practice is to change the table name if it is edited. The Friday OP was re-edited twice, and the first version was mistakenly sent to KSC. SSOC tohbans, please be more careful! They only have the fax at KSC and it MUST agree with the transmitted OP file. 4. DSN Communications ---------------- 4.1 DSN Final schedule for W19 No cancellations. 4.2 DSN Final schedule for W20 No cancellations. 4.3 DSN Preliminary schedule for W21 No cancellations. 4.4 DSN Strawman schedule for W22 There were 27 cancellations. 4.5 Data transmission from DSN Katano-san returned from vacation! 111 76 0416 Header corrupted(data OK) Requested 22 Apr. no correspondence. Requested 10 May. 126 46 1858 2% frame less. Requested 10 May. 5. Yohkoh/ASCA Pass Conflicts at KSC ---------------- 7 passes in W19 were lost due to conflicts with ASCA. There were emergency operations by ASCA on Wednesday and Thursday with only 2 passes per day. Nagase_san reports that ASCA operations were successful. A total of 6 passes will be lost to ASCA in W19. 6. Special Operations ---------------- 6.1 SXTSPT test 10 May Hara_san conducted a test of SXTSPT with unspecified revisions needed because of the mainframe computer change. This test was successful. 6.2 Recover from OP blunder See above for the problem 11-May. 6.3 SXT setup The SXT flare mode sequence table has been returned to one-filter (Be) operation. The purpose of this change is to achieve high time resolution. 6.4 HXT setup The HXT flare mode has been returned to normal (from the CAL state) by re-installing the FLARE OG to its original state. This will give the regular 0.5 sec time resolution, 4 channel energy resolution. 6.5 Campaigns There is a SoHO campaign activity Monday and Tuesday. See .plan at campaign@isass0, also transcribed on the SXT Web page, for details. This will probably not involve anything complicated from Yohkoh, just routine observations, but there will be discussion today prior to pass 4 about setup - the objective of the campaign is to use the current big active region for determination of X-ray filling factors, by comparing SXT and CDS. Jim Klimchuk of NRL is the organizer. 7. Holiday Schedule ---------------- The next holiday is on Sunday, 19-May (JST). 8. Hikitsugi Items ---------------- 8.1 Tohbans for W18 KSC : T. Ishii, H. Watanabe SSOC : T. Magara, M. Sawa 8.2 STT timer setting The STT timer should be set during pass 2 on 17-May (JST). 8.3 Transmission of OPs It is no longer necessary to confirm the transmission of OP/OG files to KSC by checking the printout on the 3rd floor in B-toh. Instead, the time of transmission of the OP/OG files should be noted down. If the SSOC or KSC tohbans notice any failure in transmission of the OP/OG files then it should be reported to Shuto-san and Kosugi-san. 8.4 SXT patrol image dumps A block command `DP BC 8C-05 (hex)' should be executed whenever an SXT Table is uploaded. Since the Sun is very quiet, ARS parameters need to be checked by the SXT patrol images dumped by this command. 8.5 WWW server of DSN The DSN NOCC Information Server (NIS) is now on-line and available for DSN scheduling operations. The URL location is: http://dsn.jpl.nasa.gov/nss This is an additional means of checking the final schedule. The automatic ftp system works very well, and using tail_dsn one can confirm the DSN schedule without using either RASM or the Web. 8.6 New works not mentioned in the manual Information about corrupt data from DSN(JPL) and the re-transmission request logs are put on the directory ~/dsn_corrupt by Katano-san. SSOC Tohbans should check these logs and report the problems. 8.7 The RASM script, krasm, now works on flare20 and not flare11. 8.8 The paper feed on the fax machine gave trouble a couple of times. Users should stand by to be sure.
