Week-42-A/I-2 /Slater/ status: OPEN G. Slater will discuss the form of the Data Transmission log (section 4.5) with Seko-san. 1. Solar Activity ---------------- Solar activity remained exremely low during week 42. The GOES low-channel level was below or at A1 level. No active region was observed on the solar disk, except a large active-region remnant rotating up from the east limb. 2. Errors and Problems ---------------- 3.1 BCS Errors ---------------- No errors. 3.2 SXT Errors ---------------- No errors. 3.3 Earthquake An M7.1 earthquake occurred in the Pacific Ocean shaked KSC in the Saturday night, but no damage has been reported from KSC. 3.4 OP Upload Error (Pass# 961020-1340, today's Pass 1) An OP mismatching error (the number: 110) was detected when today's OP was uploaded. This error was caused due to Day/Night OGs issued in the Night->Day transition. The mismatch was fixed in the same pass, but OP START was executed one minute after the scheduled time. In pass 3, OP CONTINUE was executed to fix the one minute delay. 4. DSN Communications ---------------- 4.1 DSN Final schedule for W42 (last week) ---------------- No real-time cancellation. 4.2 DSN Final schedule for W43 (this week) ---------------- No cancellation was taken. Note that we did not cancell the DSN pass starting at 19:26 UT, 27 October (DOY 301, Monday). Tohbans may need the cancellation of this pass after ASCA-Yohkoh conflict meeting. 4.3 DSN Preliminary schedule for W44 ---------------- 5 passes were cancelled. 4.4 DSN Strawman schedule for W45 ---------------- 12 passes were cancelled on Friday. All of them were due to Santiago-station 3hrs limitation. Additionl 22 passes were cancelled after the Monday meeting. The tohbans forgot to cancel unneccessary DSN passes. 4.5 Data Transmission from DSN ---------------- (Status: See /home/flare1/yohkoh/dsn_corrupt/96_XX) 276 76 0048 not received Requested 15 Oct. not received tape Requested 18 Oct. 276 76 1959 not received Requested 15 Oct. not received tape Requested 18 Oct. 276 16 0222 2% less than expected Requested 15 Oct. 2% less than expected tape Requested 18 Oct. 276 16 0404 8% less than expected Requested 15 Oct. 8% less than expected tape Requested 18 Oct. 278 16 0117 2% less than expected Requested 11 Oct. Request: Tohban-san, please send JPL a request of two Wallops data sets in DOY 276. Comment: Many of the transmission requests are data from Goldstone station. 4.6 Data Lost -------------------- It was reported from JPL that the data downlinked at Camberra around 15:40 UT, 12 October (DOY: 286) was lost due to CDR problem. The data was expected to be the record of the period 14:10 - 15:15 UT, 12 October. 5. Yohkoh/ASUKA/AKEBONO Pass Conflicts at KSC ---------------- 3 passes were given to ASCA, and 4 passes to AKEBONO in W42. 3 passes are scheduled to be given to ASCA, and no pass to AKEBONO in W43. 6. Special Activities ---------------- None 7. Holiday Schedule ---------------- The next KSC holiday is Sunday, 27-Oct-1996 JST. 8. Hikitsugi Items ---------------- 8.1. Tohbans for W42 SSOC: T. Yokoyama and G. Slater KSC: T. Yoshida and T. Shinkawa 8.2. STT Timer setting The next setting is due on Pass 2, Tuesday, 22-Oct-96 JST. 8.3 Sirius Data Nothing to report. 8.4 OP_first_guess Recall the warning from the previous reports. The op_first_guess fails to switch the KSC LOS quiet high (QT HI) to the medium (QT ME) mode of OP plan in the next day operation when KSC pass2 is cancelled. Tohbans should pay attention to this when checking the OP and change it manually. New Bug report (Week 39, Shimojo) The op_first_guess fails to include SXT CAMP OBS in quiet medium for SAA zone. Tohban should change the rate mode or delete SXT CAMP OBS operations. 8.5 Email terminator information to SXT CO The SXT chief observer prefer to receive any terminator schedule by E-mail (sxt_co@isass0) rather than by Fax. See the note in the SXT CO report. 9. Discussion: Suggestion from KSC T.Yoshida Dear all, I find one problem(?) in the Yohkoh Operation, and I have one suggestion. Recently, we usually find some unrecorded flags ('-1') in the BDR recorder at the KSC AOS. Sometimes, the unrecorded region occupys about 40 % of the size of the BDR. This is wasteful. I think we should optimize the operation of the data acquisition. One example of the optimized operation method may be as follows. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Sunlight Time Bit Rate in the Quiet Mode ---------------------------------------------------------------- less than 120min. all: High bit rate more than 120min. beginning some interval : Medium bit rate end 120min. : High bit rate ---------------------------------------------------------------- The value '120 minutes' should be changed to more accurate one. T. Yoshida @ KSC ----------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 21 Oct 1996 10:09:27 +0900 From: Hugh S. Hudson To: tyoshida@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp Subject: optimization Yoshida_san, here are some further thoughts about optimizing the Yohkoh DP rate for SXT's sake. This ideally would be done within OP_FIRST_GUESS, but it would be instructive and maybe useful to try to get an idea first just by looking at the OP_FIRST_GUESS output. Another important point is that this has impact on all of Yohkoh, not just SXT, so we really need to discuss it at the WOM. Anyway this is how I might start to tackle this problem. 1) get OP_FIRST_GUESS output files (found on $DIR_GEN_ORBIT/opog/*txt for the ASCII versions). Read them with RD_TFILE or equivalent. 2) get the ephemeris data with RD_FEM 3) estimate the sunlit time prior to each dump, bearing in mind the UV flood interval at the beginning of each orbit, for SXT. This calculation (along with lots of other useful stuff) is already being done by OP_FIRST_GUESS itself, so you might look in there for good ways to do it. It is so huge however that I am not sure it would be easy for anybody but Jim to do. 4) optimize the high rate / medium rate switching. I guess I see two cases here: The M rate switching we do for SAA, or the occurrence of a very short interval, may result in an underfilled BDR. This is OK, the way I see it; we could always fill it better by not doing the SAA switch, or by shortening its interval, but this would just fill the BDR with data that are not so good. Second case, there is overwriting of good data. To my mind this is never a good thing, since it reduces our coverage while at the same time uses the mechanisms up. So I would say that this is the main focus of an optimization. What we need to do, it seems to me, is to select a switch time to M rate that just fills the BDR. The approximate calculation is easy, and I get t(H) = (16*41 - T)/15 min t(M) = (T-41)*16/15 min where T is the total sunlit time and I've assumed the BDR capacity to be 41 minutes at H rate. Better check this! But it has the expected property that the H rate time decreases slowly from 41 minutes as T gets longer. 5) compute a command time for a H/M switch to give to the tohbans. This first step in an optimization procedure would require that the tohbans edit the OP_FIRST_GUESS output by inserting the H/M rate switch at the times recommended by this calculation, which could just be run manually in series with OP_FIRST_GUESS until it gets incorporated properly. It might be good to do it manually for a while to get some experience with what it means for the OP procedures. Good luck Hugh End of Report -----------
