SSOC Tohban Report for Week 09 (24 Feb -- 2 Mar 1997) SSOC : K. Nakakubo & T. Kobiki & K. AKita KSC : H. Sekiguchi & Y. Nakagawa Meeting Attendance : Irie, Khan, Lemen, Metcalf, Nakakubo, Ogawara, Sakao Sawa, Shimizu, Watanabe 1. Solar Activity: Solar activity has been low. A new cycle active region, AR8019 appeared from behind the east limb at high latitude, and diminished without showing much activity. 2. Errors and Problems 3.1 BCS Errors and Problems: A BCS error occurred during pass 970227-0724. It was recovered successfully in the same pass. 3.2 SXT Errors and Problems: No SXT errors occurred this week. 3.3 KSC Image check problem: On March 1st, KSC tohban chould not check the SXT image as ffiql/pfiql were unable to get the data due to date-mismatch. Those routines recognized the date as February 28th. ( side-effect of the fix for a leap year?). 3.4 GOES Event data unavailable: GOES event data has not been created since week 3 of this year. Tohbans is asking Freeland-san (via Slater-san) to fix the problem. 4. DSN Communications: 4.1 Cancelations for W09: No passes were canceled for this week. 4.2 DSN Final schedule for W10: 4 passes were canceled. 1 pass was added for Eclipse observation. 4.3 DSN Preliminary schedule for W11: No passes were canceled. 4.4 DSN Strawman schedule for W12: 39 passes were canceled. 4.5 Data Transmission from DSN: 031 17 1530 not received Requested 04 Feb. no response Requested 13 Feb. * received the e-mail e-mail Requested 15 Feb. no response Requested 21 Feb. 039 76 0753 corrupted Requested 10 Feb. no response tape Requested 18 Feb. * received the e-mail e-mail Requested 19 Feb. no response Requested 21 Feb. YOHKOH/ASCA/AKEBONO/HALCA Pass Conflicts at KSC: 5.1 Canceled passes for W09-10 Week 09: 1 passe was canceled for ASCA, 4 passes for AKEBONO, and 4 passes for Halca. Week 10: 1 pass will be canceled for ASCA , 2 passes for AKEBONO and 1 passe for HALCA. 2 passes will be canceled due to power outage at KSC. 6. Special Operations: None 7. Holiday Schedule: The next holiday will be 9-March-1997. 8. Hikitsugi Items: 8.1 Tohbans for W10 SSOC: M. Irie & T. Shimizu KSC: Y. Nakagawa & K. Shibasaki 8.2 STT Timer setting The STT timer set is due on Tuesday. 8.3 Sirius Data Nothing to report. 8.4 Power Outage at KSC For the maintenance purpose, electric power supply will be totally stopped on Mar 9th(Sun), and partially on 8th and 10th. First 2 KSC passes on Mar 8th will be canceled. 8.5 Eclipse Observation Tohban should try not to delete the following DSN contacts immediately before and after the solar eclipse( 9-Mar-97 01:09 ). DOY START BOT FAC. 67 2315 2340 DSS-16 68 0057 0122 DSS-16 8.6 Suggestion to DSN selection rule: mail from JPL I understand that you access RASM and choose the passes that are made available to you. We would like you to use the Wallops (WFF) passes as much as possible. In other words, if a pass from one of the DSN sites (Goldstone, Madrid or Canberra) can be substituted by a WFF pass, please use the WFF pass and delete the DSN pass, instead of vise versa. Please understand we are not asking you to give up any coverage but if the same coverage can be accomplished by using WFF instead of the DSN, we would like you to do so. (Albert Chang) 8.7 Changes in OP_FIRST_GUESS Lemen-san has improved op_first_guess, and there are changes as follows. For details, see appendix. 1. For the question: *Add SXT terminator images? [Default: Y ] you should always answer "Y" to this question. 2. For the question: * Change SAA times to MED RATE? [Default: Y ] you should always answer "Y". 3. There is a new question: * Enter BDR optimization (1 or 2) [Default: 2 ] you should always use the default answer of "2". 9. Action Items 9.1 Week-42-A/I-1 /Hudson, Lemen, Yoshida/ status: Open T. Yoshida has produced preliminary software to aid in optimizing the Yohkoh DP rate in OPs. Jim Lemen has just revised op_first_guess (V4.1. see attached e-mail) and it's seemingly working excellent. He will revise the current version for further optimization. After the revision work is done, all the changes should be included in the manual. 9.2 Week-07-A/I-1 /Hudson, Sawa/ status: OPEN Sawa-san raised the doubt that the CCD bake-out affect the temperature structure on YOHKOH and hence HXT calibration. H. Hudson investigated it and found that the temprature increase was negligible compared to the fluctuation caused by HV-off etc. Further investigation is in progress. 9.3 Week-08-A/I-1 /Hudson/ status: Open SXTSTP software started to give unnecessary warnings after its revision about one month ago. Fujitsu poeple are working on it. --------------------------------------------------------- (Appendix) From: James R. Lemen Message-Id: <9702262146.AA00853@isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp> To: yohkoh@flare1.solar.isas.ac.jp Subject: op_first_guess instructions Cc: sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp Status: RO Dear Yohkoh SSOC, I will write a short report on the changes that I made for op_first_guess that you can include in your report next week. I have one more thing that I plan to change with the terminator selection software. I also might change the wording of one question (to do with the BDR optimization) in the program. As for running the program, there are just a couple of minor differences. 1. For the question: * Add SXT terminator images? [Default: Y ] you should always answer "Y" to this question. The program now estimates the number of OP slots and will not add terminators if it appears that the number of OGs will exceed 128. Thus, you should answer "Y" even for wenedk table loads. 2. For the question: * Change SAA times to MED RATE? [Default: Y ] you should always answer "Y". As for the case of the terminators, the program now checks the number of OP slots and will not add OGs to change the rate unless the number is less than 128. 3. There is a new question: * Enter BDR optimization (1 or 2) [Default: 2 ] Please always use the default answer of "2". As with the terminators and SAA MED Rate changes, the program will not add OGs if it appears that the number of slots in the OP will exceed 128. I plan to make a few more changes to the terminator selection software that will perhaps create more opportunities for terminators. I believe that the changes I have made will reduce significantly the number of terminators that will be selected (I'll explain why in another message).
