SSOC Tohban Report for Week 17 (28 April - 4-May 1997) SSOC : S. Hashizume, H. Hudson KSC : K. Nakakubo, S. Kawashima 0. Meeting Attendance: - No WOM meeting because of holiay. - Therefore, read these notes carefully! Note especially item 3.4, which sounds like serious problems with the network, and item 3.6, another problem with the MS computer at KSC. 1. Solar Activity: A CME was detected by the SXT early-warning system, April 30! Otherwise not much to talk about. 2. Standard Operation: 2.1 SXT Table Uploads: ------------------------------------------------------------ Pass ID Pass # Table ID ------------------------------------------------------------ Monday 970428-0207 2 970428 P2 ARS1 STD+LONG Tuesday 970429-0414 4 970429 P4 ARS1 DKCAL Wednesday 970430-0204 2 970430 P2 ARS1 STD+DIFF Wednesday 970430-0411 4 970430 P4 ARS0 STD+LONG Wednesday 970430-0515 5 970430 P5 ARS0 STD+LONG Thursday 970501-0205 2 970501 P2 ARS1 STD+LONG Thursday 970501-0206 4 970501 P4 ARS0 STD+LONG Friday 970502-0206 2 970502 P2 ARS1 STD+LONG ------------------------------------------------------------ 2.2 STT timer setting: The STT timer was recovered on the 3rd pass Monday (28-Apr-97) after a shutdown due to eclipse conditions. A special setting was therefore done on Saturday (3-May). 2.3 Offpointing for Terminators ----------------------------- Date Time S/C Pointing ----------------------------- no offset pointing ----------------------------- 3. Errors and Problems 3.1 BCS Errors and Problems: None. 3.2 SXT Errors and Problems: None other than "bitmaps". In the pass #4 table upload on Wednesday, the SXT CO made an error in running ARS0. The KSC tohbans noticed the peculiarity, notified SXT, and uploaded a corrected table on pass #5. Thanks from SXT to KSC for catching the mistake. 3.3 SSOC procedure: The English manual says that preliminary and strawman cancellations should be sent 3 ways: RASM, e-mail, and ftp. Apparently some tohbans do not know about ftp. The Japanese manual may be deficient here, or perhaps the policy to send by ftp is outdated. This should be clarified. The ftp password is the same as the RASM second password. 3.4 Internet failure (IMPORTANT!) During Golden Week it appears that the Internet across the Pacific has more or less stopped. The ftp transfer of a 220B file to DSN on Friday afternoon, 5:00 pm, has taken more than half an hour. The SSOC tohbans believe strongly that ISAS must do something about this. Otherwise we will need to consider how to do operational tasks in other ways, which are likely to require more manpower. 3.5 Aging Fujitsu printer The printer attached to the mainframe workstation did not start up properly and ate several pieces of paper. The Fujitsu engineer fixed it, but it failed again. Tohbans take warning - you must watch the paper feed carefully as it prints. 3.6 OP transmission problem (IMPORTANT) At about 21:30 Friday evening, Kii-san of HALCA reported informally that the OP file transmission had failed. i) SSOC tohbans have been told that they do not need to check the console printer for file transmission any longer. In fact, Kii-san reported that the printer was down anyway. ii) Without firm knowledge that the OP for the next day has been properly transmitted, Yohkoh may go into night mode. iii) MUSES-B may be adding a new factor to this situation. The OP transmission from Friday worked OK, but on Saturday the ASCA tohban reported that the SXT file transfer for Monday had failed. The problem may or may not be found and discovered before the upload time (09:05 JST). This is pass #2, at which time the OP would stop also. Hara_san converted the OP into raw hex listing for KSC to enter in case of a continued problem, but the problem was resolved on Sunday and the SSOC tohbans were able to complete the file transfers. 4. DSN Communications: 4.1 DSN Final schedule for W18: Three passes had to be cancelled (REAL-TIME) for W18. 4.2 DSN Final schedule for W19: The file 7dayss.w19 arrived incomplete, leading to an incomplete solass. This situation was recovered by transfers using RASM, which were faster than ftp! Could the DSN ftp simply have timed out? There were no cancellations needed in the final for W19. 4.3 DSN Preliminary schedule for W20: The file forecast.w20 arrived incomplete, leading to an incomplete solasf. See comments above. There were four passes cancelled from W20. A couple of them had been X'd out on the AOSLOSGD plots, suggesting that they had already been cancelled once, but if so they crept back in. 4.4 DSN Strawman schedule for W20: 43 passes were cancelled from the strawman for Week 20. 4.4 DSN Strawman schedule for W21: There were 31 cancellations for week 21. The Santiago passes were left for next week's tohbans to deal with. 4.5 Data Transmission from DSN: (/home/flare1/yohkoh/dsn_corrupt/97_16) 5. YOHKOH/ASCA/AKEBONO/HALCA Pass Conflicts at KSC: 5.1 Canceled passes for W19 5.2 Canceled passes for W20 5.3 There will be a long-term planning meeting with Nagase-sensei and the representatives of all four satellites on May 15. 6. Special Operations: BCS cals on May 2. 7. Holiday Schedule: The next holiday will be Sunday, May 11. 8. Hikitsugi Items: 8.1 Tohbans for W19 SSOC : K. Marubashi, Y. Kato KSC : S. Kawashima, S. Morita 8.2 STT Timer setting Return to the standard Tuesday schedule. 8.3 Sirius Data Nothing to report. 8.4 Suggestion to DSN selection rule: mail from JPL I understand that you access RASM and choose the passes that are made available to you. We would like you to use the Wallops (WFF) passes as much as possible. In other words, if a pass from one of the DSN sites (Goldstone, Madrid or Canberra) can be substituted by a WFF pass, please use the WFF pass and delete the DSN pass, instead of vise versa. Please understand we are not asking you to give up any coverage but if the same coverage can be accomplished by using WFF instead of the DSN, we would like you to do so. (Albert Chang) 8.5 Santiago passes, week 21. This is left over from the week 18 tohbans, but can be handled by Seko_san and Hilton_san on Tuesday. 9. Action Items Week-16-A/I-1 /Watanabe/ status: Deferred Arrange for the modification of the Gateway software to accept the data from the new Wallops DSS-80 antenna. Watanabe-san asked Prof. Yamada for modification. Week-18-A/I-1 /kanji/ status: open What about OP file transfer confirmation?
