----------------------------------------------------------------- SSOC Tohban Report for Week 34 (18 Aug 1997 - 24 Aug 1997) ----------------------------------------------------------------- SSOC : J. Shin, N. Nitta KSC : S. Nagata, S. Masuda 0. Meeting attendance (in alphabetical order): No weekly operations meeting on 25-Aug-97 because of the Kyoto IAU GA. 1. Solar Activity: Very low. Active region complex 8073+8074+8075 was quite stable. A bright region rotated on to the NE limb on Thursday, which increased the steady GOES flux to almost the B level. Despite its apparent association with a filament, however, it has not produced major flares. 2. Standard Operation: 2.1 SXT Table Uploads: The following SXT tables were uploaded last week. ------------------------------------------------------------ Pass ID Pass # Table ID ------------------------------------------------------------ Tuesday 970818-1547 3 970818 P3 ARS1 DKCAL Wednesday 970819-1548 3 970819 P3 ARS2 STD+DIFF Thursday 970820-1548 4 970820 P4 ARS1 STD+LONG Friday 970822-0001 4 970821 P4 ARS1 STD+LONG Saturday 970822-1136 1 970822 P1 ARS0 CDS CAMP Saturday 970822-1446 4 970822 P4 ARS1 STD Monday 970825-1238 2 970824 P2 ARS1 CDS CAMP ------------------------------------------------------------ 2.2 STT timer setting: We stopped the STT timer on Tuesday (the 19th) when Canopus was temporarily occulted. On Friday we set the time when the star emerged from eclipse, but the visible range was still so short that another timer set was called for on Saturday, which we did. The next timer setting is due around Tuesday, the 26th. 2.3 Offpointing for Terminators : None 2.4 HXT, BCS, and WBS calibrations : None 3. Errors and Problems 3.1 SXT Errors and Problems: On Monday there was an error (probably SEU) at pass 970818-0205. It indicated WRE. Following the Yobi-A and Yobi-B commands during the same pass, it was recovered at the following pass (970817-0309) using the SXT Recovery Plan. 3.2 BCS Errors and Problems: None 3.3 DSN Schedule File Transmission Problem: The strawman for W97_37 did not arrive until Friday morning. Ftp to JPL was almost out of the question. Reminder: For file transmission to JPL via e-mail, one must use flare20. It is probably the only machine registered at JPL, i.e., flare14 cannot be used. 4. DSN Communications: 4.1 DSN Final schedule for W34: No cancellations. 4.2 DSN Final schedule for W35: We cancelled three passs from the W35 final schedule. 4.3 DSN Preliminary Schedule for W36: No cancellations. 4.4 DSN Strawman schedule for W37: A total of 23 passes were cancelled. 4.6 Data Transmission from DSN: (/home/flare1/yohkoh/dsn_corrupt/97_34) 211 17 0350 corrupted tape Requested 05 Aug. corrupted tape Requesred 19 Aug. Closed / same data 4.7 Antenna Parameters for DSN stations In response to Hudson-san's request, JPL sent us DSN antenna mask parameters. Should be helpful for selecting low altitude DSN passes (but we did not use it.) 5.0 KSC Pass cancellation 5.1 YOHKOH/ASCA/AKEBONO/HALCA Pass Conflicts at KSC: No confilicts with anybody for W34-35!! 5.2 Other None. 6. Special Operations: None 7. Holiday Schedule: Week 97_35 consists of seven days, lasting to Sunday morning. 8. Hikitsugi Items: 8.1 Tohbans for W34 SSOC : J. Khan, R. Kano KSC : S. Masuda, J. Ogura 8.2 OP and Command Sheet Status The command sheets and the OP-list for Monday (25-Aug-97) have been sent to KSC. The approved OP has also been transferred to KSC. 8.3 OPOGNEW vs OPOGEDT During week 97_32, Prof. Sakurai of NAOJ implemented a program on mainframe called OPOGNEW, which was meant to be an upgrade to OPOGEDT in the sense that it would allow the user to print out the newly edited OP on the workstation printer. Previously we had to exit OPOGEDT and even logout and login again to print it out the OP on an old-fashioned printer located outside the ops room. Although we had already known that Prof. Sakurai's programming skill is outstanding (as testified in, e.g., his deciphering the GOES tektronics plot into the real flux), we took the liberty of confirming that the printout on workstation really reflected the most recently edited version. We did not find any problem, of course, as long as we made sure that the PF4 key ("print") was pressed. The tohban can print out the OP by IDL> print_op Similarly, in order to print out the OG, say IDL> print_ogall IDL> print_ogsel Using OPOGNEW and the mainframe emulater on flare20 (which is also nice), we enjoyed preparing the OP without bothering to touch the mainframe terminal. A tohban belonging to an older generation may have a different feeling, though. 8.4 STT_PLOT During week 97_33, Prof. Akita of OGU, another computer addict, provided a convenient tool for checking the STT signal. It is called "STT_PLOT". IDL> stt_plot (,'DD-MM-YY') This will plot a time variation of STT output signal level. If STT is working properly, the signal level should stay in between 400 and 800, and should vary only in the time period set by the timer. See sample plots in the tohban mannual. One has to be on the home directory of yohkoh to run this program. Prof. Akita will probably agree to develop more software (see 8.8). 8.5 New Manual and Checksheet Versions ----Quoted from the previous week report ---------------------------------- A new version of the English Tohban Manual is now out. Future tohbans should write corrections and updates directly in the manual, and inform A. Sterling of the changes. Jim Lemen has made a new version of the checksheet to correspond to the new manual. Changes to the checksheet should be marked on the checksheet and reported to A. Sterling. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8.6 Sirius Data Nothing to report. 8.7 Suggestion to DSN selection rule: mail from JPL ----Quoted from the previous week report ---------------------------------- I understand that you access RASM and choose the passes that are made available to you. We would like you to use the Wallops (WFF) passes as much as possible. In other words, if a pass from one of the DSN sites (Goldstone, Madrid or Canberra) can be substituted by a WFF pass, please use the WFF pass and delete the DSN pass, instead of vice versa. Please understand we are not asking you to give up any coverage but if the same coverage can be accomplished by using WFF instead of the DSN, we would like you to do so. (Albert Chang) --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8.8 Further software development proposed by Dr. Hudson (i) Workstation software to generate the STT hex commands. (TOO HARD!) (ii) Workstation software to generate hex commands for offpoints (HSH volunteers for this). (iii) Workstation software to monitor the efficiency of BDR use (ie, how much overwrite, how much empty space in actual fact). (NOT CRITICAL FOR OPERATIONS) (iv) Anything that saves tohbans time and improves the reliability of their work would be greatly appreciated. 9. Action Items This is not directly operations related, but the laser disc player at D-toh has ceased to communicate with workstations since the NVS was returned from repair. It appears from the diagnosis by the Flare Workstation Managers that the terminal server box ds90tl became out of order. Greg Slater suggests that its replacement by ISAS will be the quickest way to resume laser disc recording. end of report
