----------------------------------------------------------------- SSOC Tohban's Report for Week 46 (10 Nov 1997 - 16 Nov 1997) ----------------------------------------------------------------- SSOC : Sterling & Bargatze KSC : Kubo & Sasaki 0. Meeting attendance (in alphabetical order): Bargatze, McKenzie, Nitta, Sawa, Sterling, Suga, Watanabe, Watari 1. Solar Activity Solar activity decreased from the previous week due to the disappearance of active region NOAA 8100 around the West limb. Overall, activity was moderate with one M-class flare and many C-class flares. 2. Standard Operation: 2.1 SXT Table Uploads: The following SXT tables were uploaded last week. ------------------------------------------------------------ Pass ID Pass # Table ID ------------------------------------------------------------ Monday 971110-0414 2 971110 P2 ARS1 STD Tuesday 971111-0411 1 971111 P1 ARS1 STD+DKEXP Tuesday 971111-0514 2 971111 P2 ARS1 DIFF Wednesday 971112-0411 2 971112 P2 ARS0 BAKE Thursday 971113-0619 4 971113 P4 ARS1 DKCAL Friday 971114-0206 1 971114 P1 ARS2 STD Friday 971114-0309 2 971114 P2 ARS1 STD Monday 911117-0411 3 971117 P3 ARS2 STD ------------------------------------------------------------ 2.2 STT timer setting: The STT timer was set during pass 2 on Nov 11, Tuesday UT (971111-0514). 2.3 Off-pointing for Terminators: None 2.4 HXT, BCS, and WBS calibrations: A BCS stim calibration was performed during pass 3 on Nov 11, Wednesday UT (971111-0618) and a source calibration was done on 971111 near 05:35 UT. A GRS calibration is scheduled to be performed during pass 3 on Nov 17, Monday UT (971117-0411). A second GRS calibration is scheduled to be performed during pass 4 on Nov 17, Monday UT (971117-0515). These calibrations were requested by Suga-san. 3. Errors and Problems 3.1 BCS Errors and Problems: A BCS error occurred on the first pass on Friday during pass 971114-0206, and was recovered during pass 971114-0309. 3.2 SXT Errors and Problems: No SXT bitmap errors occurred last week. 3.2.1 SXT Table Upload Error: ----Report on Table Read Failure from Nitta-san--------------------------- The KSC tohbans reported that SXT Table Read failed at pass 2 on Saturday, when the table "971115 P2 ARS1 STD+BE" was to be uploaded. The mismatch count was 48. I sent the same table for upload at pass 3. The result was unchanged. Following Kano-san's instructions, I checked the "current table" in SXTSPT, which is the one read from the satellite. It was same as yesterday's table, making us conclude that the on-board table was not modified by Table Write. At the above passes, SXT Control Manual was issued, but it appears safe to continue observing with yesterday's table, so at the last pass (pass 4), SXT Control Auto will be issued. Anyway the above table is cancelled now. The reason for the error is to be investigated. Here are some facts that may be of importance for isolating the problem. 1. The NEC personnel at KSC thought the MS computer at SSOC might be not working, i.e., no table might actually be transmitted to KSC. But I saw some NEC people at SSOC, who confirmed on the MS computer that the table had been trasmitted. 2. The number of the commands generated in SXTSPT was indeed 48. 3. It is hard to think of a connection, but when I prepared the above table, I filled the comment line on the first page. I am sending this message avoiding isass0, which has frequently been taken down for a system upgrade. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4. DSN Communications: 4.1 DSN Final Schedule for W46: No passes canceled by the SSOC tohbans, but DSN canceled three passes. 4.2 DSN Final Schedule for W47: One pass was canceled by the SSOC tohbans. 4.3 DSN Preliminary Schedule for W48: Two passes canceled. 4.4 DSN Strawman Schedule for W48: The strawman schedule arrived on Friday last week. Sixty-two passes were canceled by the SSOC tohbans. 4.5 Data Transmission from DSN: (/home/flare1/yohkoh/dsn_corrupt/97_46) 304 76 2318 the blocks differ with email Requested 06 Nov. no response Requested 11 Nov. 306 76 0302 the blocks differ with email Requested 06 Nov. no response Requested 11 Nov. 307 74 1204 the blocks differ with email Requested 06 Nov. no response Requested 11 Nov. 308 80 2106 corrupted tape Requested 06 Nov. no response tape Requested 11 Nov. 309 80 0031 corrupted tape Requested 11 Nov. 309 66 1958 not received Requested 11 Nov. 312 46 1956 corrupted tape Requested 11 Nov. 313 76 0020 corrupted tape Requested 11 Nov. 5. KSC Pass Conflicts and Schedule 5.1 YOHKOH/ASUKA/AKEBONO/HARUKA Pass Conflicts at KSC: Nine YOHKOH passes were lost during week 46 (to HARUKA and AKEBONO). Six YOHKOH passes are scheduled to be given up (all to HARUKA) during week 47. 5.2 Future Schedule: The meeting for the zero-order estimation for pass conflicts for the next three months was held last Thursday (13-Nov). Watanabe-san gave us the following report from that meeting: -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Long Range Schedule Arrangement Since the launch of HARUKA, the KSC tracking facilities have been running in operation nearly twenty four hours a day. No time has been available yet for maintenance this year. NEC and MELCO are planning to reserve a pair of two-week periods for maintenance with both of these two-week intervals occurring before the end of March 1998. The work requires six consecutive hours each day. Candidate periods are 19-31 of January and 16-31 of March. During these periods, we will perhaps lose one contact per day at KSC. Also, Planet-B will be launched next summer. In spite of the fact that Planet-B is a Japanese mission, it will be launched during summertime; its launch window starts July 4, 1998 for the mission to Mars. During the flight operation (lasting for the twenty six days before the launch window begins), the KSC 20-meter antenna system will be used. After the launch, Planet-B will be tracked by the USD 64-meter and the newly (to be) installed KSC 34-meter antenna. Tracking scheduling during the Planet-B flight operation interval will be negotiated among the five teams namely: AKEBONO, YOHKOH, ASCA, HARUKA and Planet-B (in March, perhaps). Tetsuya WATANABE (NAOJ) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6. Special Operations: A SXT CCD Bakeout was done from pass 971112-0411 until 971113-0619. The bakeout was performed in anticipation of calibration of an instrument to be flown on a SERTS rocket flight planned for week 47. Also, a SPARTAN free flyer will be released from the space shuttle (which will also be carrying Doi-san, a Japanese astronaut) but at present there are no plans for coordinating observations with SPARTAN. 7. Hikitsugi Items: 7.1 Bug in op_first_guess SSOC tohbans should be aware of a bug in op_first_guess: "% OP_START_END: Problem with detection of LOS/AOS/DSN Repro Events" appears when we have close enough contacts (more than two downlinks in an orbit). We avoided the problem, when using op_first_guess, by responding to "Change any standard op_first_guess options?" by choosing yes, then in response to "Enter BDR optimization (1 or 2), by choosing 1. 7.3 Tohbans for W47 SSOC : [ ] & Watari KSC : Ichimoto & Sasaki 7.4 OP and Command Sheet Status The command sheets and the OP for Monday (17-Nov-97) have been created, checked, and transferred to KSC. 7.5 STT timer setting STT timer setting is due on 18 Nov, Tuesday. 7.6 Holiday Schedule: The next holiday will be 23 Nov, Sunday. 7.7 New Versions of English Tohban Manual and Tohban Checksheet The English language versions of the YOHKOH tohban manual and the tohban check sheet were updated last week. Among the changes are additions of discussions about the stt_plot and print_op routines. The check sheet has also been updated to reflect the page numbers in the new version of the manual. As always, tohbans are requested to write changes and indicate corrections in the manual so that they can be input the next time the manual is updated. ----From previous tohban reports------------------------------------------ In addition to the standard mainframe terminal, it is also possible to use the mainframe emulator on flare20 instead of the mainframe terminal for some situations: flare20% telnet mainf1 17 s88239 ex op(opognew) PF3 is {Esc}3 PF4 is {Esc}4 etc. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7.8 Sirius Data Nothing to report. 7.9 Suggestion to DSN selection rule: mail from JPL ----Quoted from the previous week's report ------------------------------- I understand that you access RASM and choose the passes that are made available to you. We would like you to use the Wallops (WFF) passes as much as possible. In other words, if a pass from one of the DSN sites (Goldstone, Madrid or Canberra) can be substituted by a WFF pass, please use the WFF pass and delete the DSN pass, instead of vice versa. Please understand we are not asking you to give up any coverage but if the same coverage can be accomplished by using WFF instead of the DSN, we would like you to do so. (Albert Chang) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8. Action Items 8.1 Further software development It would be greatly appreciated if the SSOC tohbans could recommend any software development that they think will save future tohbans time and which improves the reliability of their work. 8.2 Week-35-A/I-1 SSOC tohbans The SSOC tohbans should inspect the horizon maps sent by JPL and think about whether it would be possible to determine whether the acceptable minimum altitude (Is 10 degrees really the best estimate or is less acceptable?). Please refer to Hudson-san for further information. 8.3 Week-37-A/I-1 /Hudson/status open The following IDL softwares do not work well. Hudson-san will fix them. IDL> print_ogall IDL> print_ogsel After the corrections are made, these procedures should be incorporated into the tohban manual. end of report
