----------------------------------------------------------------- SSOC Tohban's Report for Week 47 (17 Nov 1997 - 23 Nov 1997) ----------------------------------------------------------------- SSOC : Watari KSC : Ichimoto & Sasaki (Special Thanks : Stering & Hudson) 0. Meeting attendance (in alphabetical order): Meeting was not held because of a national holiday. Hudson, UeNo, Watari 1. Solar Activity Solar activity was moderate with many C-class flares. 2. Standard Operation: 2.1 SXT Table Uploads: The following SXT tables were uploaded last week. ------------------------------------------------------------ Pass ID Pass # Table ID ------------------------------------------------------------ Monday 971117-0514 4 971117 P4 ARS2 STD Wednesday 971119-0205 2 971119 P2 ARS2 DKCAL Thursday 971120-0103 1 971120 P1 ARS2 STD+BE Friday 971120-1548 1 971120 P1 ARS0 JET Friday 971121-0310 3 971120 P3 ARS0 JET2 Friday 971121-0419 4 971120 P4 ARS1 STD+LONG Saturday 971122-0619 4 971121 P4 ARS1 STD+BE ------------------------------------------------------------ 2.2 STT timer setting: The STT timer was set during pass 2 on Nov 18, Tuesday UT (971118-0355). 2.3 Off-pointing for Terminators: None 2.4 HXT, BCS, and WBS calibration GRS calibrations were performed during pass 3 (971117-0411) and pass 4 (971117-0515) on Nov 17, Monday. 3. Errors and Problems 3.1 BCS Errors and Problems: No BCS errors occurred. 3.2 SXT Errors and Problems: SXT night command and warm reset errors occurred during pass 1 on 17 November. The errors were recovered during pass 3. 3.2.1 SXT Table Upload Error: SXT Table Read failure reported last week occurred on Monday again. According to the investigation by Hara-san and Fujitsu SE, the reason for the error was that the index-space of the SXT table became full. The prepared index-space was only for five-year operation. The problem was fixed by Fujitsu SE on Tuesday. 3.3 S3500 Computer Trouble at KSC: S3500 computer at KSC does not work sometimes and is not reliable. It might be the problem of the power supply of S3500. It is difficult for KSC thobans to check the status of Yohkoh without S3500. KSC thobans use the mainframe via network to check the status of Yohkoh in the case of S3500 trouble. KSC thobans use SAQL01-04 accounts during contacts. 3.4 Transmitter Trouble at KSC: Commands could not be sent to Yohkoh because of the transmitter problem at KSC during 4 and 5 passes on Tuesday. Pass 3 on Wednesday was also canceled for this problem. Three Yohkoh passes were lost by this trouble. This problem was recovered on Thursday. However, the reason for the trouble is still unclear. 4. DSN Communications: 4.1 DSN Final Schedule for W47: No passes were canceled by the SSOC tohbans, but DSN canceled two passes. 4.2 DSN Final Schedule for W48: Two passes were canceled by the SSOC tohbans. 4.3 DSN Preliminary Schedule for W49: No passes were canceled. 4.4 DSN Strawman Schedule for W50: The strawman schedule arrived on Friday. Thirty eight passes were canceled by the SSOC tohbans. 4.5 Data Transmission from DSN: (/home/flare1/yohkoh/dsn_corrupt/97_47) 304 76 2318 the blocks differ with email Requested 06 Nov. no response Requested 11 Nov. KSC Pass Conflicts and Schedule 5.1 YOHKOH/ASUKA/AKEBONO/HARUKA Pass Conflicts at KSC: Six YOHKOH passes were lost during week 47 (all to HARUKA). Three YOHKOH passes are scheduled to be given up (all to HARUKA) during week 48. 5.2 Future Schedule: The meeting for the zero-order estimation for pass conflicts for the next three months was held last Thursday (13-Nov). Watanabe-san gave us the following report from that meeting: -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Long Range Schedule Arrangement Since the launch of HARUKA, the KSC tracking facilities have been running in operation nearly twenty four hours a day. No time has been available yet for maintenance this year. NEC and MELCO are planning to reserve a pair of two-week periods for maintenance with both of these two-week intervals occurring before the end of March 1998. The work requires six consecutive hours each day. Candidate periods are 19-31 of January and 16-31 of March. During these periods, we will perhaps lose one contact per day at KSC. Also, Planet-B will be launched next summer. In spite of the fact that Planet-B is a Japanese mission, it will be launched during summertime; its launch window starts July 4, 1998 for the mission to Mars. During the flight operation (lasting for the twenty six days before the launch window begins), the KSC 20-meter antenna system will be used. After the launch, Planet-B will be tracked by the USD 64-meter and the newly (to be) installed KSC 34-meter antenna. Tracking scheduling during the Planet-B flight operation interval will be negotiated among the five teams namely: AKEBONO, YOHKOH, ASCA, HARUKA and Planet-B (in March, perhaps). Tetsuya WATANABE (NAOJ) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6. Special Operations: Collaboration with the SERTS rocket was done between 1937-1957 UT on 18 November. The space shuttle was launched on 19 November. This shuttle is carrying a Japanese astronaut, Doi-san. A SPARTAN free flyer was released from the space shuttle. However, a trouble occurred on SPARTAN. There were no coordinating observations with SPARTAN now. 7. Hikitsugi Items: 7.1 Requests from DSN Be advised that DOY 331 and 332 are Holidays for us and our office will be closed on these days, therefore we request that orbital elements for next Week (WK 48/49) be transmitted to us as soon as possible. Please remove Donna Dillard and Diem Tu from the distribution list and add Ben-Zion Bienstock. 7.2 Chief SXT Supertohban for W48/49 (e-mail from Hara-san) Hara-san will be absent from Tokyo from 25 Nov to 7 Dec because of the synchrotron experiment at KEK PF and UVSOR. He asked Kano-san to be the chief sxt supertohban. Please let him know when troubles related to SXT occur. 7.3 Mainframe operation schedule between the end of this year and the beginning of the next year The mainframe will stop for maintenance between 9:00 and 16:00 (JST) on 21 December 1997. It will become auto-operation mode after 7:00 (JST) on 30 December 1997. It will start at 11:00 (JST) on 4 January 1998. 7.4 Bug in op_first_guess SSOC tohbans should be aware of a bug in op_first_guess: "% OP_START_END: Problem with detection of LOS/AOS/DSN Repro Events" appears when we have close enough contacts (more than two downlinks in an orbit). We avoided the problem, when using op_first_guess, by responding to "Change any standard op_first_guess options?" by choosing yes, then in response to "Enter BDR optimization (1 or 2), by choosing 1. 7.5 Tohbans for W48 SSOC : Hudson & UeNo KSC : Ichimoto & Suematsu 7.6 OP and Command Sheet Status The command sheets and the OP for Monday (24-Nov-97) have been created, checked, and transferred to KSC. 7.7 STT timer setting STT timer setting is due on 25 Nov, Tuesday. 7.8 Holiday Schedule: The next holiday will be 30 Nov, Sunday. 7.9 New Versions of English Tohban Manual and Tohban Checksheet The English language versions of the YOHKOH tohban manual and the tohban check sheet were updated last week. Among the changes are additions of discussions about the stt_plot and print_op routines. The check sheet has also been updated to reflect the page numbers in the new version of the manual. As always, tohbans are requested to write changes and indicate corrections in the manual so that they can be input the next time the manual is updated. ----From previous tohban reports------------------------------------------ In addition to the standard mainframe terminal, it is also possible to use the mainframe emulator on flare20 instead of the mainframe terminal for some situations: flare20% telnet mainf1 17 s88239 ex op(opognew) PF3 is {Esc}3 PF4 is {Esc}4 etc. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7.10 Sirius Data Nothing to report. 7.11 Suggestion to DSN selection rule: mail from JPL ----Quoted from the previous week's report ------------------------------- I understand that you access RASM and choose the passes that are made available to you. We would like you to use the Wallops (WFF) passes as much as possible. In other words, if a pass from one of the DSN sites (Goldstone, Madrid or Canberra) can be substituted by a WFF pass, please use the WFF pass and delete the DSN pass, instead of vice versa. Please understand we are not asking you to give up any coverage but if the same coverage can be accomplished by using WFF instead of the DSN, we would like you to do so. (Albert Chang) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8. Action Items 8.1 Further software development It would be greatly appreciated if the SSOC tohbans could recommend any software development that they think will save future tohbans time and which improves the reliability of their work. 8.2 Week-35-A/I-1 SSOC tohbans The SSOC tohbans should inspect the horizon maps sent by JPL and think about whether it would be possible to determine whether the acceptable minimum altitude (Is 10 degrees really the best estimate or is less acceptable?). Please refer to Hudson-san for further information. 8.3 Week-37-A/I-1 /Hudson/status open The following IDL softwares do not work well. Hudson-san will fix them. IDL> print_ogall IDL> print_ogsel After the corrections are made, these procedures should be incorporated into the tohban manual. end of report
