----------------------------------------------------------------- SSOC Tohban's Report for Week 48 (23 Nov 1997 - 1 Dec 1997) ----------------------------------------------------------------- SSOC : UeNo and Hudson KSC : Ichimoto and Suematsu 0. Meeting attendance (in alphabetical order): Hori, Hudson, Ishii, Khan, Ogawara, Watanabe, Weber 1. Solar Activity High. X flares, well observed. See ftp://isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp/pub/sxt_co. SXTweekly.html for details of the X3 on Nov. 27. 2. Standard Operation: 2.1 SXT Table Uploads: The following SXT tables were uploaded last week. ------------------------------------------------------------ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID ________________________________#_______________________________ Monday 24-NOV-97 02:19 3 971123 P3 ARS1 DIFF Tuesday 25-NOV-97 00:54 3 971124 P3 ARS1 DKCAL Wednesday 26-NOV-97 01:13 3 971125 P2 ARS1 STD+BE Friday 27-NOV-97 22:23 2 971127 P3 ARS0 JET Friday 28-NOV-97 01:49 4 971127 P4 ARS1 STD+THICK ------------------------------------------------------------ 2.2 STT timer setting: The STT timer was set during pass 2 on Nov 24, Tuesday UT (971124-1547). The next setting can be done on Tuesday, Dec 2. 2.3 Off-pointing for Terminators: None 2.4 HXT, BCS, and WBS calibration No calibrations were done. 3. Errors and Problems 3.1 BCS Errors and Problems: One BCS errors was found at first pass of Saturday 29th (JST). It was recovered in the next pass successfully. 3.2 SXT Errors and Problems: No SXT errors occurred. 3.3 OP_FIRST_GUESS mis-optimization The scheduling of BDR has been optimized since early 1997, with switches between M and H rate at times calculated to use the BDR efficiently and not overuse the SXT mechanisms. This part of OP_FIRST_GUESS normally works fine, but we found a case in which there seemed to be a problem. This is documented in flare20 yohkoh/opog (the new op archive) in the form of the raw OP (971126-1341-0) and the manually edited new OP (971126-1341). When Jim Lemen visits ISAS next time, this would be a piece of repair work. 3.4 Workstation print software: PRINT_OP and PRINT_OGSEL now work properly, if run from flare14 or flare20. They do not archive properly if run from flare1. See Action Items. 4. DSN Communications: 4.1 DSN Final Schedule for W48: one pass was deleted (Goldstone during KSC) 4.2 DSN Final Schedule for W49: no passes deleted 4.3 DSN Preliminary Schedule for W50: no passes deleted 4.4 DSN Strawman Schedule for W51: 40 passes deleted 4.5 Data Transmission from DSN: (/home/flare1/yohkoh/dsn_corrupt/97_48) 309 80 0031 corrupted tape Requested 11 Nov. no response tape Requested 18 Nov. KSC Pass Conflicts and Schedule 5.1 YOHKOH/ASUKA/AKEBONO/HARUKA Pass Conflicts at KSC: Three Yohkoh passes were lost during week 48 due to conflict with Haruka. 5.2 Other Pass Cancellations 27-Nov-97, Pass1 (from 05:40 UT) was cancelled, because of the launch of an HII rocket (TRMM satellite + another) at Tanegashima. (*) There are no cancelled passes in the next week (W49). Further, it is time for the routine schedule slip to follow orbit timing. So, the KSC-Tohbans will have to work all 35 passes! A wonderful opportunity! 6. Special Operations: The space shuttle was launched on 19 November. This shuttle is carrying a Japanese astronaut, Doi-san. The SPARTAN free flyer was released from the space shuttle. However, trouble occurred at the time of release, and the observations had to be abandoned. The astronauts were able to recover the SPARTAN for possible future use, perhaps on the current flight. 7. Hikitsugi Items: 7.1 Requests from DSN Please remove Donna Dillard and Diem Tu from the distribution list and add Ben-Zion Bienstock. Note: the week 48 tohbans removed Donna Dillard but could not add Ben-Zion Bienstock yet because of a lack of a good address. 7.2 Chief SXT Supertohban for W48/49 (e-mail from Hara-san) Hara-san will be absent from Tokyo from 25 Nov to 7 Dec because of the synchrotron experiment at KEK PF and UVSOR. He asked Kano-san to be the chief sxt supertohban. Please let him know when troubles related to SXT occur. 7.3 Mainframe operation schedule between the end of this year and the beginning of the next year The mainframe will stop for maintenance between 9:00 and 16:00 (JST) on 21 December 1997. It will go to auto-operation mode after 7:00 (JST) on 30 December 1997. It will start again at 11:00 (JST) on 4 January 1998. 7.4 Bug in op_first_guess SSOC tohbans should be aware of a bug in op_first_guess: "% OP_START_END: Problem with detection of LOS/AOS/DSN Repro Events" appears when we have close enough contacts (more than two downlinks in an orbit). We avoided the problem, when using op_first_guess, by responding to "Change any standard op_first_guess options?" by choosing yes, then in response to "Enter BDR optimization (1 or 2), by choosing 1. 7.5 Tohbans for W49 SSOC : Ishii & Hori KSC : Suematsu & Tonooka 7.6 OP and Command Sheet Status The command sheets and the OP for Monday (1-Dec-97) have been created, checked, and transferred to KSC. 7.7 STT timer setting STT timer setting is due on 2 Dec, Tuesday. 7.8 Holiday Schedule: The next holiday will be Sunday, Dec. 7. <=== honto? 7.9 New Versions of English Tohban Manual and Tohban Checksheet The English language versions of the YOHKOH tohban manual and the tohban check sheet were updated last week. Among the changes are additions of discussions about the stt_plot and print_op routines. The check sheet has also been updated to reflect the page numbers in the new version of the manual. As always, tohbans are requested to write changes and indicate corrections in the manual so that they can be input the next time the manual is updated. ----From previous tohban reports------------------------------------------ In addition to the standard mainframe terminal, it is also possible to use the mainframe emulator on flare20 instead of the mainframe terminal for some situations: flare20% telnet mainf1 17 s88239 ex op(opognew) PF3 is {Esc}3 PF4 is {Esc}4 etc. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7.10 Sirius Data Nothing to report. 7.11 Suggestion to DSN selection rule: mail from JPL ----Quoted from the previous week's report ------------------------------- I understand that you access RASM and choose the passes that are made available to you. We would like you to use the Wallops (WFF) passes as much as possible. In other words, if a pass from one of the DSN sites (Goldstone, Madrid or Canberra) can be substituted by a WFF pass, please use the WFF pass and delete the DSN pass, instead of vice versa. Please understand we are not asking you to give up any coverage but if the same coverage can be accomplished by using WFF instead of the DSN, we would like you to do so. (Albert Chang) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7.12 Status of Wallops handover Hudson exchanged e-mail with Rick Jones. We are still waiting for ftp access to the Wallops scheduling database. 8. Action Items 8.1 Further software development. Status CONTINUING. It would be greatly appreciated if the SSOC tohbans could recommend any software development that they think will save future tohbans time and which improves the reliability of their work. 8.2 Week-35-A/I-1 SSOC tohbans. Status CLOSED. The SSOC tohbans should inspect the horizon maps sent by JPL and think about whether it would be possible to determine whether the acceptable minimum altitude (Is 10 degrees really the best estimate or is less acceptable?). Please refer to Hudson-san for further information. CLOSED. The week 48 tohbans have decided that it's not worth the effort. 8.3 Week-48-A/I-1 /Hudson/status AJAR. Hudson has fixed print_ogsel (Week 48). Upon editing the OG's, this command from IDL will print the edited OG item on the workstation printer in B-toh. PRINT_OGALL still does not work well. Hudson will fix it next. After the corrections are made, these procedures should be incorporated into the tohban manual. 8.4 e-mail communications. We rely upon e-mail more and more. For operations-related e-mail, it's hereby suggested that we make it a rule to ACKNOWLEDGE the receipt of any such e-mail message. This applies particularly among SSOC, SXT_CO, KSC, and SXT_ST. end of report
