==================================================================== ++================================================================++ || SSOC Tohban's Report for Week 03 (11 Jan 1998 - 18 Jan 1998) || ++================================================================++ ==================================================================== SSOC: J. Khan, S. Yashiro KSC : M. Ohyama, K. Fujiki 0. Meeting Attendance (in alphabetical order): H.S.Hudson, J.I.Khan, T.Watanabe, S.Yashiro, K.Yaji, M.Sawa, A.Sterling, T.Kosugi, L.Acton 1. Solar Activity A new magnetic flux region emerged near NOAA AR 8131. This region was the source of increased activity and flaring. The GOES X-ray background level also increased from mid-A level to mid-B level. There was one M-class flare and several C-class flares. 2. Standard Operation: 2.1 SXT Table Uploads: The following SXT tables were uploaded last week. ---------------------------------------------------------------- JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID ================================================================ Monday 12-JAN-98 00:24 2 980111 P2 ARS1 STD+LONG Monday 12-JAN-98 03:50 4 980111 P4 ARS1 STD Tuesday 13-JAN-98 04:08 4 980112 P4 ARS1 DARKCAL Thursday 13-JAN-98 23:17 2 980113 P2 ARS1 STD+DIF Friday 15-JAN-98 01:18 3 980114 P3 ARS1 STD Friday 16-JAN-98 03:20 4 980115 P4 ARS1 STD Saturday 17-JAN-98 00:12 3 980116 P3 ARS1 STD ---------------------------------------------------------------- 2.2 STT timer setting: --------------------------------------- Operation Date(JST) Pass ID ======================================= Timer-Set Done 13-JAN-98 980113-0102 Next Timer Set 20-JAN-98 980119-1444 --------------------------------------- 2.3 HXT, BCS, and WBS calibration No Cals. 3. Errors and Problems 3.1 BCS Errors and Problems: The BCS Chief Observer found an `unflagged' BCS error that cannot easily be found by the KSC tohbans. The BCS RECOVERY PLAN was carried out during the 1st pass on 15 Jan (980114-1444), and the BCS recovered from this error. A BCS error was found at pass 4 on 16 Jan (980116-0207) by KSC Tohbans, and recovered during the same pass. 3.2 SXT Errors and Problems: No errors. 4. DSN Communications: 4.1 DSN Schedule Passes are deleted by DSN and SSOC Tohbans as follows. ------------------------------------------------------------------- DSN Schedule Week Deleted Passes =================================================================== Final W03 2 passes cancelled by SSOC Final W04 16 passes cancelled by SSOC Final W04 6 passes cancelled by DSN/Wallops Preliminary W05 7 passes cancelled by SSOC Strawman W06 63 passes cancelled by SSOC ------------------------------------------------------------------- 4.3 Data Transmission from DSN: (/home/flare1/yohkoh/dsn_corrupt/98_03) 354 76 0601 not received Requested 26 Dec. no response Requested 06 Jan. no response Requested 13 Jan no response Requested 16 Jan. 355 66 1856 corrupted tape Requested 06 Jan no response tape Requested 13 Jan no response tape Requested 16 Jan 361 17 0434 corrupted tape Requested 08 Jan no response tape Requested 13 Jan. 005 66 1312 not received Requested 09 Jan. KSC Pass Conflicts and Schedule 5.1 YOHKOH/ASCA/AKEBONO/HALCA Pass Conflicts at KSC: In week 03 (12 Jan. - 18 Jan.), 5 passes were lost due to HALCA, 1 pass due to Akebono, and 1 pass for antenna maintenance. In week 04 (18 Jan. - 24 Jan.), 4 passes are lost due to HALCA, 1 pass due to Akebono, and 5 pass for antenna maintenance. 6. Hikitsugi Items 6.1 Status of Wallops handover (W48/97 - W03/98) The handover of scheduling took place for scheduling of passes this year. No noticeable shift (or error) of contact time predicition was found in the schedule any more, but as Wallops use different format for the table, software modification is required in the cancel_dsn and op_first_guess programmes. A software for automatic setup of schedule tables in a new wallops directory is wanted. Preliminary versions are being developed by Hugh Hudson-san. JPL maintain the files in RASM, as propmised. Their tables have so far been consistent with those from Wallops. The system to communicate with Wallops is still under construction. For details, see "Temporary Manual" written by Hugh Hudson in the directory ~/wallops on flare20. 6.2 Bug in op_first_guess --- (NOT REVISED) SSOC tohbans should be aware of a bug in op_first_guess: "% OP_START_END: Problem with detection of LOS/AOS/DSN Repro Events" appears when we have close enough contacts (more than two downlinks in an orbit). We avoided the problem, when using op_first_guess, by responding to "Change any standard op_first_guess options?" by choosing yes, then in response to "Enter BDR optimization (1 or 2), by choosing 1. 6.3 Tohbans for W04 SSOC : Y.Hanaoka, K.Yaji KSC : H.Hara, K.Kobayashi, K.Hori 6.4 OP (+OG) and Command Sheet Status The command sheets and the OP/OG for Monday (19-JAN-98) have been created, checked, and transferred to KSC. 6.5 STT timer setting STT timer setting is due on 20 January, Tuesday. 6.6 Holiday Schedule: The next holiday will be on 26 January, Monday. 6.7 New Versions of English Tohban Manual and Tohban Checksheet The English language versions of the YOHKOH tohban manual and the tohban check sheet were updated on Nov 17. Among the changes are additions of discussions about the stt_plot and print_op routines. The check sheet has also been updated to reflect the page numbers in the new version of the manual. As always, tohbans are requested to write changes and indicate corrections in the manual so that they can be input the next time the manual is updated. A new preliminary Tohban Checksheet has been created to help with the changed procedures for Wallops communications. ----From W47 tohban reports------------------------------------------ In addition to the standard mainframe terminal, it is also possible to use the mainframe emulator on flare20 instead of the mainframe terminal for some situations: flare20% telnet mainf1 17 s88239 ex op(opognew) PF3 is {Esc}3 PF4 is {Esc}4 etc. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6.8 Sirius Data Nothing to report. 6.9 Suggestion to DSN selection rule: mail from JPL -- NOT REVISED HEREAFTER ----Quoted from the previous week's report ---------------------------- I understand that you access RASM and choose the passes that are made available to you. We would like you to use the Wallops (WFF) passes as much as possible. In other words, if a pass from one of the DSN sites (Goldstone, Madrid or Canberra) can be substituted by a WFF pass, please use the WFF pass and delete the DSN pass, instead of vice versa. Please understand we are not asking you to give up any coverage but if the same coverage can be accomplished by using WFF instead of the DSN, we would like you to do so. (Albert Chang) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 6.10 Loss of pass for Antenna maintenance From 15-January for about two weeks (see 7.4), maintenance works of the 20m antenna will take place during the operation gaps between ASCA and Yohkoh and holidays. To do that, the first pass of Yohkoh and the last pass of ASCA are sacrificed. 6.11 DP Error A DP error (error code = 90 ->75) was found during the data dump at 980106-0411. KSC tohban made a contact to FACOM/Nomura_san, and tried to clear the error at the following pass. However, Nomura_san analyzed the error and found that wrong information on the location of bad loops set the BAD flag in the block 3 and 4 of BDR and that this block was temporarily unusable. As a result, the capacity of BDR is at the moment nine tenth of the normal capacity. Nomura_san will consider the procedure of recovering the block rather carefully. He suggested two options and consider possibility of hardware failure. As far as we know this error has not been recovered yet and the BDR capacity remains at 90%. 7. Action Items (Same as last week's SSOC Report) 7.1 Further software development. Status CONTINUING. It would be greatly appreciated if the SSOC tohbans could recommend any software development that they think will save future tohbans time and which improves the reliability of their work. 7.2 Week-48-A/I-1 /Hudson/status AJAR. Hudson has fixed print_ogsel (Week 48). Upon editing the OG's, this command from IDL will print the edited OG item on the workstation printer in B-toh. PRINT_OGALL still does not work well. Hudson will fix it next. After the corrections are made, these procedures should be incorporated into the tohban manual. 7.3 e-mail communications We rely upon e-mail more and more. For operations-related e-mail, it's hereby suggested that we make it a rule to ACKNOWLEDGE the receipt of any such e-mail message. This applies particularly among SSOC, SXT_CO, KSC and SXT_ST. 7.4 Long Range Schedule Arrangement (W49) Since the launch of HARUKA, the KSC tracking facilities have been running in operation nearly twenty four hours a day. No time has been available yet for maintenance this year. NEC and MELCO are planning to reserve a pair of two-week periods for maintenance with both of these two-week intervals occurring before the end of March 1998. The work requires six consecutive hours each day. Candidate periods; 17-31 of January and 16-31 of March During these periods, we will perhaps ose one contact per day at KSC. Also, Planet-B will be launched next summer. In spite of the fact that Planet-B is a Japanese mission, it will be launched during summertime; its launch window starts July 4, 1998 for the mission to Mars. During the flight operation (lasting for the twenty six days before the launch window begins), the KSC 20-meter antenna system will be used. After the launch, Planet-B will be tracked by the USD 64- meter and the newly (to be) installed KSC 34-meter antenna. Tracking scheduling during the Planet-B flight operation interval will be negotiated among the five teams namely: AKEBONO, YOHKOH, ASCA, HALCA and Planet-B (in March, perhaps). Tetsuya WATANABE (NAOJ) 7.9 Off pointing (From SXT_CO: Weber san) If no off-pointing is planed in the current week (see SXT cheif observer's report), there is no need for SSOC tohbans to ask SXT_CO whether or not offpoint should be added to the every day's command sheet. -- end of report -----------------------------------------------------------
