==================================================================== ++================================================================++ || SSOC Tohban's Report for Week 04 (18 Jan 1998 - 25 Jan 1998) || ++================================================================++ ==================================================================== SSOC: Y. Hanaoka, K. Yaji KSC : K. Hori, K. Kobayashi 0. Meeting Attendance (in alphabetical order): H.S.Hudson, J.I.Khan, T.Kosugi, S.Kubo, A.Shiozawa ,T.Watanabe, K.Yaji 1. Solar Activity Solar Activity is low. Although several active regions are found, the GOES X-ray background is low-B level. There was only one C-class flare till 24-Jan. But one M-class flare and two C-class flares occurred on 25-Jan. Maybe these flares occurred at active regions which appeared on the east. In week 04, a coordinated observation with the VLA was going on. A target filament, which is located in south polar region, erupted on Jan. 21, 04-06h UT. 2. Standard Operation: 2.1 SXT Table Uploads: The following SXT tables were uploaded last week. ---------------------------------------------------------------- JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID ================================================================ Monday 19-JAN-98 00:49 4 980118 P4 ARS1 DARKCAL Monday 19-JAN-98 02:32 5 980118 P5 ARS0 JK+JET Tuesday 19-JAN-98 21:40 2 980119 P2 ARS0 VLA+DIF Tuesday 20-JAN-98 01:07 4 980119 P4 ARS0 VLA+DI Wednsday 20-JAN-98 20:15 2 980120 P2 ARS1 STD+LONG Thursday 21-JAN-98 22:16 3 980121 P3 ARS0 VLA+LONG Friday 22-JAN-98 22:35 3 980122 P3 ARS0 VLA+LONG Saturday 23-JAN-98 21:10 3 980123 P3 ARS1 STD+LONG Sunday 24-JAN-98 21:28 4 980124 P4 ARS1 STD ---------------------------------------------------------------- 2.2 STT timer setting: --------------------------------------- Operation Date(JST) Pass ID ======================================= Timer-Set Done 20-JAN-98 980119-1444 Next Timer Set 27-JAN-98 980127-1238 --------------------------------------- 2.3 HXT, BCS, and WBS calibration No Cals. 3. Errors and Problems 3.1 BCS Errors and Problems: No errors. 3.2 SXT Errors and Problems: No errors. 3.3 BDR Errors and Problems: As described in section 6.11, one tenth of the BDR blocks cannot be used due to an error. On Jan. 23, a trial to clear the error flag with the 'RST BAD BANK' command was carried out, but the BDR errors weren't recovered well. Fujitsu people including Nomura-san will investigate the situation further, and there will be another trial soon. 4. DSN Communications: 4.1 DSN Schedule Passes are deleted by DSN and SSOC Tohbans as follows. ------------------------------------------------------------------- DSN Schedule Week Deleted Passes =================================================================== Final W04 0 passes cancelled by SSOC Final W04 3 passes cancelled by DSN/Wallops Final W05 21 passes cancelled by SSOC Final W05 6 passes cancelled by DSN/Wallops Preliminary W06 5 passes cancelled by SSOC Preliminary W06 19 passes cancelled by DSN/Wallops Strawman W07 95 passes cancelled by SSOC ------------------------------------------------------------------- 4.2 DSN Realtime Cancel One DSN, of which AOS time is 12:34UT, was cancelled by DSN/Wallops after OP was uploaded on Jan 20. We noticed this cancellation in the by final schedule(W04) list received in the morning on 21 Jan, but We didn't get any information about this cancellation except for the above list. 4.3 Data Transmission from DSN: (/home/flare1/yohkoh/dsn_corrupt/98_04) 354 76 0601 not received Requested 26 Dec. no response Requested 06 Jan. no response Requested 13 Jan no response Requested 16 Jan. no response Requested 22 Jan. 355 66 1856 corrupted tape Requested 06 Jan no response tape Requested 13 Jan no response tape Requested 16 Jan no response tape Requested 22 Jan 361 17 0434 corrupted tape Requested 08 Jan no response tape Requested 13 Jan. KSC Pass Conflicts and Schedule 5.1 YOHKOH/ASCA/AKEBONO/HALCA Pass Conflicts at KSC: In week 04 (18 Jan. - 24 Jan.), 4 passes were lost due to HALCA, 1 pass due to Akebono, and 5 passes for antenna maintenance. In week 05 (26 Jan. - 31 Jan.), 1 pass was lost due to HALCA, and 5 passes for antenna maintenance. 6. Hikitsugi Items 6.1 Status of Wallops handover (W48/97 - W03/98) The handover of scheduling took place for scheduling of passes this year. No noticeable shift (or error) of contact time predicition was found in the schedule any more, but as Wallops use different format for the table, software modification is required in the cancel_dsn and op_first_guess programmes. A software for automatic setup of schedule tables in a new wallops directory is wanted. Preliminary versions are being developed by Hugh Hudson-san. JPL maintain the files in RASM, as propmised. Their tables have so far been consistent with those from Wallops. The system to communicate with Wallops is still under construction. For details, see "Temporary Manual" written by Hugh Hudson in the directory ~/wallops on flare20. 6.2 Bug in op_first_guess --- (NOT REVISED) SSOC tohbans should be aware of a bug in op_first_guess: "% OP_START_END: Problem with detection of LOS/AOS/DSN Repro Events" appears when we have close enough contacts (more than two downlinks in an orbit). We avoided the problem, when using op_first_guess, by responding to "Change any standard op_first_guess options?" by choosing yes, then in response to "Enter BDR optimization (1 or 2), by choosing 1. 6.3 Tohbans for W05 SSOC : S.Kubo, A.Shiozawa KSC : H.Hara, K.Kobayashi, K.Hori 6.4 OP (+OG) and Command Sheet Status The command sheets and the OP/OG for Tuesday (27-JAN-98 JST, but 26-JAN-98 UT) have not been created, checked, and transferred to KSC ,yet. 6.5 STT timer setting STT timer setting is due on 27 January, Tuesday. 6.6 Holiday Schedule: The next holiday will be on 2 February, Monday. 6.7 New Versions of English Tohban Manual and Tohban Checksheet The English language versions of the YOHKOH tohban manual and the tohban check sheet were updated on Nov 17. Among the changes are additions of discussions about the stt_plot and print_op routines. The check sheet has also been updated to reflect the page numbers in the new version of the manual. As always, tohbans are requested to write changes and indicate corrections in the manual so that they can be input the next time the manual is updated. A new preliminary Tohban Checksheet has been created to help with the changed procedures for Wallops communications. ----From W47 tohban reports------------------------------------------ In addition to the standard mainframe terminal, it is also possible to use the mainframe emulator on flare20 instead of the mainframe terminal for some situations: flare20% telnet mainf1 17 s88239 ex op(opognew) PF3 is {Esc}3 PF4 is {Esc}4 etc. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6.8 Sirius Data Nothing to report. 6.9 Suggestion to DSN selection rule: mail from JPL -- NOT REVISED HEREAFTER ----Quoted from the previous week's report ---------------------------- I understand that you access RASM and choose the passes that are made available to you. We would like you to use the Wallops (WFF) passes as much as possible. In other words, if a pass from one of the DSN sites (Goldstone, Madrid or Canberra) can be substituted by a WFF pass, please use the WFF pass and delete the DSN pass, instead of vice versa. Please understand we are not asking you to give up any coverage but if the same coverage can be accomplished by using WFF instead of the DSN, we would like you to do so. (Albert Chang) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 6.10 Loss of pass for Antenna maintenance From 15-January for about two weeks (see 7.4), maintenance works of the 20m antenna will take place during the operation gaps between ASCA and Yohkoh and holidays. To do that, the first pass of Yohkoh and the last pass of ASCA are sacrificed. 6.11 DP Error A DP error (error code = 90 ->75) was found during the data dump at 980106-0411. KSC tohban made a contact to FACOM/Nomura_san, and tried to clear the error at the following pass. However, Nomura_san analyzed the error and found that wrong information on the location of bad loops set the BAD flag in the block 4 and 5 of BDR and that this block was temporarily unusable. As a result, the capacity of BDR is at the moment nine tenth of the normal capacity. Nomura_san will consider the procedure of recovering the block rather carefully. He suggested two options and consider possibility of hardware failure. As far as we know this error has not been recovered yet and the BDR capacity remains at 90%. 7. Action Items (Same as last week's SSOC Report) 7.1 Further software development. Status CONTINUING. It would be greatly appreciated if the SSOC tohbans could recommend any software development that they think will save future tohbans time and which improves the reliability of their work. 7.2 Week-48-A/I-1 /Hudson/status AJAR. Hudson has fixed print_ogsel (Week 48). Upon editing the OG's, this command from IDL will print the edited OG item on the workstation printer in B-toh. PRINT_OGALL still does not work well. Hudson will fix it next. After the corrections are made, these procedures should be incorporated into the tohban manual. 7.3 e-mail communications We rely upon e-mail more and more. For operations-related e-mail, it's hereby suggested that we make it a rule to ACKNOWLEDGE the receipt of any such e-mail message. This applies particularly among SSOC, SXT_CO, KSC and SXT_ST. 7.4 Long Range Schedule Arrangement (W49) Since the launch of HARUKA, the KSC tracking facilities have been running in operation nearly twenty four hours a day. No time has been available yet for maintenance this year. NEC and MELCO are planning to reserve a pair of two-week periods for maintenance with both of these two-week intervals occurring before the end of March 1998. The work requires six consecutive hours each day. Candidate periods; 17-31 of January and 16-31 of March During these periods, we will perhaps ose one contact per day at KSC. Also, Planet-B will be launched next summer. In spite of the fact that Planet-B is a Japanese mission, it will be launched during summertime; its launch window starts July 4, 1998 for the mission to Mars. During the flight operation (lasting for the twenty six days before the launch window begins), the KSC 20-meter antenna system will be used. After the launch, Planet-B will be tracked by the USD 64- meter and the newly (to be) installed KSC 34-meter antenna. Tracking scheduling during the Planet-B flight operation interval will be negotiated among the five teams namely: AKEBONO, YOHKOH, ASCA, HALCA and Planet-B (in March, perhaps). Tetsuya WATANABE (NAOJ) 7.9 Off pointing (From SXT_CO: Weber san) If no off-pointing is planed in the current week (see SXT cheif observer's report), there is no need for SSOC tohbans to ask SXT_CO whether or not offpoint should be added to the every day's command sheet. -- end of report -----------------------------------------------------------
