SSOC Tohban's Report for Week 20 (11 May 1998 - 17 May 1998) SSOC : A. Sterling, T. Miyagoshi KSC : D. Sasaki, H. Tonooka 0. Meeting Attendance : Miyagoshi, Sterling, Shimojo, Watanabe, Sawa, Hudson, Liu, McKenzie ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Solar Activity Solar activity was much reduced from the previous week, with the GOES level below C for most of the week. Since 11-May, there have been a few GOES C-flares but no M-flares. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. Standard Operations 2.1 SXT Table Uploads The following SXT tables were uploaded last week. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Pass ID Pass Table ID ================================================================ 980511-1030 1 980511 P1 ARS2 STD+J95 980512-1134 3 980512 P3 ARS2 DARK+J59 980513-1135 3 980513 P3 ARS0 JOP080 980513-1238 4 980513 P4 ARS2 STD+J59 980514-1032 3 980514 P3 ARS1 STD+DIF 980515-0826 1 980515 P1 ARS2 STD+J59 980516-0826 2 980516 P2 ARS1 STD ---------------------------------------------------------------- 2.2 STT timer setting STT timer was set at pass 2 (980512-1031) on 12-May (Tue). 2.3.1 HXT Calibration There were three HXT calibrations last week: 980511-1134 980513-1031 980515-0929 2.3.2 BCS Calibration None -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. Errors and Problems 3.1 BCS Errors None 3.2 SXT Errors None 3.3 Telephones Off at ISAS over Weekend. In connection with the change of the telephone numbers at ISAS, telephone connections were either unavailable or unreliable between 18:00 on Friday (15 May) and 08:30 Monday (18-May) JST. In anticipation of this, the tohbans completed all vital communications between KSC and ISAS by Friday afternoon. The phone number for the outside line in B-toh remained unchanged, and consequently that phone was available throughout the weekend for final verifications and emergencies. Although this situation was inconvenient, there were no substantial problems encountered. 3.4 Late Final Schedule Arrival from Wallops. Since the switch of DSN planning to Wallops, the final schedule for the following week has been arriving on Friday morning instead of Thursday morning Japan time. This is inconvenient for the tohbans, as it means that the weekend OP often cannot be generated until Friday, which is already a busy day with other DSN planning activities. If Wallops could prepare the Final Schedule on their Wednesday evening instead of their Thursday morning (as they currently do), we would be able to get the schedule here in Japan on our Thursday morning. We asked Debbie Dukes at Wallops if this would be possible. Her response (on May 15) was the following: It is no problem for us to publish our schedule for Astro and Solar on Wednesday evening. However, we do not have JPL (DSN) input until our Thursday morning and I understand there is many changes in their schedule between their forecast and operations week. Maybe an hour or two is all we could save due to procedures at JPL. I am really on vacation today and next week and just in for a test, but I will talk to JPL and see if anything can be done. Meanwhile we will get the schedule to you as soon as possible. Thus this issue is still pending. But it is an important item and should be followed up in the coming weeks. 3.5 Week 21 Final Schedule Communications Problem. We had much confusion with the W21 final schedule from Wallops. Here is a log of events: a) We received the final schedule on our Friday morning, 15 May. This schedule was labeled Version 00. b) We requested 14 deletions to the schedule, including 4 on Monday, 18 May. c) On Saturday, 16 May, we retrieved the newest 7dayss.w21 via ftp from Wallops. It is labeled 01, and contained many deletions. For example, in addition to the four deletions we requested for 18 May, four additional passes were also deleted, for a total of eight deletions on Monday. d) We called up Wallops to ask about the additional missing passes. Mr. Sherman, who was working graveyard, found that the latest file he had for Week 21 was a version 04! For 18-May, that version included the four passes that had been deleted without explanation in version 00 mentioned in (c) above. Three of the four passes that we requested to be deleted in (a) were also deleted from that list, but one of the four requested to be deleted (at START time 0322--a Wallops pass) had reappeared on version 04 (even though it was missing from version 01). e) During the same conversation, Sherman-san checked the Wallops tracking schedule for 18-May from a different document. According to that document, the 0322 pass is not scheduled for Wallops that day. f) Sherman-san emailed the Version 04 schedule to yohkoh@flare1. We requested that he leave a message with the tracking scheduling people asking them to be sure that the most recent version of the final schedule is in the ftp area. The normal scheduler, Debbie Dukes, is not in during week 21, but Sherman-san said that the message will get to an appropriate person. g) After the call, we again verified that the current schedule in the ftp area is version 01, not 04. In conclusion, it seems as if the version 01 schedule may have been a draft schedule, and that the most recent schedule was mistakenly not put into the ftp area. For the new tohbans, I'd suggest that they go with the version 04 schedule, and assume that the 0322 pass is deleted. Remember that Wallops will not be able to get the new schedule on-line before about midnight on Monday night. Thus the tohbans will probably have to add passes to op_first_guess by hand for the Tuesday OP. They also have to FAX the latest version of the schedule (with some explanation) to KSC. They should then look for a new version of the w21 final schedule on Tuesday morning. If it is not there, it may be necessary to call Wallops again. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 4. Special Operations 4.1 Normal Pointing Adjustment. Hugh Hudson implemented a repointing of the spacecraft during pass 980512-1031. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 5. DSN Communications 5.1 DSN Schedule Passes were deleted by DSN and SSOC Tohbans as follows. ------------------------------------------------------------------- DSN Schedule Week Deleted Passes =================================================================== Final W20 6 passes deleted by SSOC Final W21 14 passes deleted by SSOC(*) Preliminary W22 0 passes deleted Strawman W23 47 passes deleted by SSOC ------------------------------------------------------------------- (*) See Section 3.5 5.2 Data Transmission from DSN * 123 66 0447 corrupted tape Requested 08 May Closed/ same data **124 76 0813 not received Requested 08 May no response Requested 13 May Closed/ No data 125 74 2222 corrupted tape Requested 07 May Closed/ correct data 126 76 0848 corrupted tape Requested 08 May Closed/ correct data 126 74 1734 corrupted tape Requested 07 May Closed/ correct data 128 66 0249 corrupted Requested 14 May * DOY-123 M66 0447(CDR Email and FAX)-- Degraded TLM data for entire suport. **DOY-124 W76 0813(WPS Email)-- ID 6142 was deleted verbally by the solar project from Japan to our operations chief on day 122. KSC Pass Conflicts and Schedule In week 20, 8 passes were lost due to conflicts with HARUKA and Akebono. In week 21, 6 passes will be lost to Akebono. The Thursday meeting during week 21 will include the long-range planning schedule. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 7. Hikitsugi Items 7.1 Tohbans for week 21 (18 May - 24 May) SSOC : Liu, Shimojo KSC : Hara, Sasaki 7.2 OP and Command Sheets The OP and Command Sheets for Monday (18-May) have been checked and OKed by KSC, but not transfered to KSC (there is one question remaining about the OP which the new Tohbans will have to answer). Unless there is a new version of the week 21 schedule sent by either ftp *or email* (sometimes Wallops only sends updates by email), the DSN passes are correct as in the current OP. Note: 1) Never forget to transmit the OP after approved by KSC Tohbans. 2) If OP is made for a pass more than once, add a comment on the revised OP sheet (e.g., VER 2, REV B, etc). 7.3 DSN Communications. See Section 3.5 above. 7.4 STT timer setting STT timer setting is due on 19-May, Tuesday. 7.5 Holiday Schedule The next holiday will be on 24-May, Sunday (JST) 7.6 FAX to Sugiyama san for BFM checks We FAXed the Weekly Visible Diagram to Sugiyama san (FAX: 045-939-2789) last week as requested. We have not heard back from him, but presumably it is not necessary to FAX him the diagram in the coming week. 7.7 ISAS Phone Numbers Effective today (Monday 18-May Mon), virtually all the phone numbers at ISAS have changed in association with installation of a dial-in system in ISAS. Some of the new phone numbers are listed below. From outside Japan, dial +81-427-XX-XXXX. -------------------------- 1. Operations room (B-toh) External line 69-4639 => 69-4639 (unchanged) Fax number 59-4240 => 59-8467 Internal line x2077 => 59-8398 2. Analysis rooms (D-toh) External line 69-4531 => 59-8466 Fax number 69-4532 => 59-8469 Internal lines x3494 => 59-8146 (East Room, aka big room) x3493 => 59-8145 x3492 => 59-8147 (West Room, aka small room) 3. ISAS operator External line 51-3911 => 51-3911 (unchanged) 4. Dai-Sensei-tachi (New numbers only): Prof. Ogawara: 59-8132 Prof. Nagase: 59-8351 -------------------------- ===================================================================== || The following is the same as the previous week's report (except || || for some rewriting). || ===================================================================== 7.8 DSN scheduling Since mid week 10, 1998, Wallops schedules all DSN passes instead of JPL. The system to communicate with Wallops is still under construction. For details, see the temporary manual in the file ~wallops/README file on flare20. All DSN-related software should be run from an IDL session in the flare20/wallops subdirectory. Please immediately report any problems with the DSN software or errors in the manual to Hudson san. 7.9 Bug in op_first_guess SSOC tohbans should be aware of a bug in op_first_guess, e.g., "% OP_START_END: Problem with detection of LOS/AOS/DSN Repro Events". If DSN-related software in the directory ~yohkoh/wallops does not work correctly, check to see if the files being used which you have obtained through ftp from Wallops (e.g., 7dayss.wNN) are written in the same format as the previous weeks' files. 7.10 BDR trouble (See 'DP error' in "SSOC Tohban's Report for Week 02" in 1998.) A DP error (error code = 90 ->75) was found during the data dump at 980106-0411. 2 of 20 BDR blocks are not accessible. As a result, the capacity of BDR is at the moment nine-tenths that of the normal capacity. This error has not been recovered yet. Please note the special commands, RST BAD BANK DP DC EXEC now routinely appearing in the end of command sheets. This is part of the recovery attempt. 7.11 E-mail communications We rely upon e-mail more and more. For operations-related e-mail, it's hereby suggested that we make it a rule to ACKNOWLEDGE the receipt of any such e-mail message. This applies particularly among SSOC, SXT_CO, KSC and SXT_ST. 7.12 Long Range Schedule Arrangement for Planet-B Planet-B will be launched on July 4, 1998 for the mission to Mars. During the flight operation (lasting for twenty six days before the launch window begins), the KSC 20-meter antenna system will be used. After the launch, Planet-B will be tracked by the USD 64m and the newly (to be) installed KSC 34m antenna. Tracking schedule during the flight operation interval will be negotiated among the five teams namely: AKEBONO, YOHKOH, ASCA, HALCA and Planet-B. (Tetsuya WATANABE,NAOJ) * For more information, see a filed report (written in Japanese). 7.13 New database (W10-1998) R. Bentley and S. Freeland have apparently finished installing a new and very convenient database in the Yohkoh system. It is "orb" and one gets orbit data from it via IDL> rd_orb, t1, t2, orb IDL> utplot,orb,orb.height,/ynoz ; for example (/ys/gen/idl/ref_access/rd_orb.pro) Now at last we know where the satellite was at all times! (Hudson) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 8. Action Items (Same as last week's SSOC Report) 8.1 Further software development. Status CONTINUING. It would be greatly appreciated if the SSOC tohbans could recommend any software development that they think will save future tohbans time and which improves the reliability of their work. 8.2 Week-48-A/I-1 /Hudson/status AJAR. Hudson has fixed print_ogsel (Week 48, 1997). Upon editing the OG's, this command from IDL will print the edited OG item on the workstation printer in B-toh. PRINT_OGALL still does not work well. Hudson will fix it next. After the corrections are made, these procedures should be incorporated into the tohban manual. 8.3 Week-10-A/I-1 /Hudson, Lemen/status CLOSED DSN_CONFLICT does not work with the new Wallops files. It needs fixing before the next conflict season starts (perhaps in May?). Week-20. Hudson san reports this as fixed. Now a CLOSED item. 8.4 Week-16-A/I-1 /Hudson, Ogawara/status OPEN Hudson asks for the link margin of the Wallops station, which fixes the minimum maximum elevation of Yohkoh contacts. Ogawara provides info on the Yohkoh transmitters, if necessary. === END ===
