SSOC Tohban's Report for Week 23 (08 June 1998 - 14 June 1998) SSOC : J. I. Khan, Ashizawa KSC : T. Tanaka, J. Sato 0. Meeting Attendance : Ashizawa, Hara, Hudson, Kato, Khan, Kosugi, McKenzie, Sawa, Sterling, Watanabe ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Solar Activity Solar activity increased to a moderate level. There were two GOES M-class flares and several C- and B-class flares. There were many small sunspot regions on the solar disk labeled by NOAA. Two long-decay events (LDEs) occurred during the week. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. KSC Pass Conflicts and Schedule Week 24: 5 KSC passes were lost due to conflicts with Planet-B preparations. Week 25: We expect to lose 12 KSC passes due conflicts with Planet-B. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 7. Hikitsugi Items 7.1 Tohbans for week 25 (15 June - 21 June) SSOC : Y. Kato (-16, -17), S. Akiyama (16, 17), H. S. Hudson (-19) KSC : J. Sato, M. Torii 7.2 STT timer setting STT timer setting is due on Tuesday, 16 June. The current tohbans have already prepared the Real-time Command sheets for this STT timer. 7.3 Holiday Schedule There is no satellite holiday this week. Note that Sunday, 21 June (JST) is NOT a holiday! The next holiday will be on Tuesday, 23 June (JST). 7.4 DSN selection by the program FMT_WALLOPS The SSOC tohbans should check the ACTIVITY column of the 7dayss-list to make sure that the keyword TKG PASS is not omitted or replaced with another term. This happened last week. The FMT_WALLOPS program searches for TKG PASS and will eliminate passes without this keyword. According to Wallops they will not use other comments in the ACTIVITY columun. But the SSOC tohbans should check this for the next few weeks just to make sure. 7.5 Update on the Late Arrival of the Final Schedule from Wallops In previous weeks it was reported that the final schedule for the following week has been arriving on Friday morning instead of Thursday morning Japan time. This week the final schedule for week 25 arrived at Thursday morning. We anticipate the final schedules to continue to arrive on Thursday mornings from now on. This should also be checked for the next few weeks. 7.6 Pass Additions and Wallops Deletions For the Final Schedule for week 25 we noticed that there were very few DSN passes given to Yohkoh. The situation was similar but less severe for the Preliminary Schedule for week 26. It seems the reason this occurred was because the tohban doing the Strawman Schedule for week 25, a couple of weeks ago, selected passes and deleted the rest of the passes, many of which were Wallops passes. The next week, when the Preliminary (Forecast) Schedule came in for week 25, all of the passes requested for deletion by the Yohkoh tohban were deleted, as well as MOST of the others by DSN/JPL. This left Yohkoh with very few passes. So we we went back and looked at passes that were requested for deletion by the Yohkoh tohban for the Strawman Schedule for week 25, with the aim of adding some of those passes back into the schedule. We generally requested Wallops passes if at all possible, but also requested passes from other stations if necessary. From Debbie Dukes: >..... >I was surprised your schedule was so light for next week. JPL sends >us deletes the same time that you do. It would be ok with us if >you waited until the forecast week to see what JPL has deleted before >sending us your deletes-this would assure you of more coverage from >the DSN. >Please let us know if you would like to do the schedule this way. At the meeting it was decided that for the Strawman schedule the SSOC tohbans should select the best DSN passes but, in addition, they should not delete any Wallops passes. After receiving the Preliminary schedule with JPL/DSN deletions, the unnecessary Wallops passes should be deleted. ===================================================================== || The following is the same as the previous week's report (except || || for some rewriting). || ===================================================================== 7.7 DSN scheduling Since mid week 10, 1998, Wallops schedules all DSN passes instead of JPL. The system to communicate with Wallops is still under construction. For details, see the temporary manual in the file ~wallops/README file on flare20. All DSN-related software should be run from an IDL session in the flare20/wallops subdirectory. Please immediately report any problems with the DSN software or errors in the manual to Hudson san. 7.8 Bug in op_first_guess SSOC tohbans should be aware of a bug in op_first_guess, e.g., "% OP_START_END: Problem with detection of LOS/AOS/DSN Repro Events". If DSN-related software in the directory ~yohkoh/wallops does not work correctly, check to see if the files being used which you have obtained through ftp from Wallops (e.g., 7dayss.wNN) are written in the same format as the previous weeks' files. 7.9 BDR trouble (See 'DP error' in "SSOC Tohban's Report for Week 02" in 1998.) A DP error (error code = 90 ->75) was found during the data dump at 980106-0411. 2 of 20 BDR blocks are not accessible. As a result, the capacity of BDR is at the moment nine-tenths that of the normal capacity. This error has not been recovered yet. Please note the special commands, RST BAD BANK DP DC EXEC now routinely appearing in the end of command sheets. This is part of the recovery attempt. 7.10 E-mail communications We rely upon e-mail more and more. For operations-related e-mail, it's hereby suggested that we make it a rule to ACKNOWLEDGE the receipt of any such e-mail message. This applies particularly among SSOC, SXT_CO, KSC and SXT_ST. 7.11 Long Range Schedule Arrangement for Planet-B Planet-B will be launched on July 4, 1998 for the mission to Mars. During the flight operation (lasting for twenty six days before the launch window begins), the KSC 20-meter antenna system will be used. After the launch, Planet-B will be tracked by the USD 64m and the newly (to be) installed KSC 34m antenna. Tracking schedule during the flight operation interval will be negotiated among the five teams namely: AKEBONO, YOHKOH, ASCA, HALCA and Planet-B. (Tetsuya WATANABE,NAOJ) * For more information, see a filed report (written in Japanese). 7.12 New database (W10-1998) R. Bentley and S. Freeland have apparently finished installing a new and very convenient database in the Yohkoh system. It is "orb" and one gets orbit data from it via IDL> rd_orb, t1, t2, orb IDL> utplot,orb,orb.height,/ynoz ; for example (/ys/gen/idl/ref_access/rd_orb.pro) Now at last we know where the satellite was at all times! (Hudson) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 8. Action Items (Same as last week's SSOC Report) 8.1 Further software development. Status CONTINUING. It would be greatly appreciated if the SSOC tohbans could recommend any software development that they think will save future tohbans time and which improves the reliability of their work. 8.2 Week-48-A/I-1 /Hudson/status AJAR. Hudson has fixed print_ogsel (Week 48, 1997). Upon editing the OG's, this command from IDL will print the edited OG item on the workstation printer in B-toh. PRINT_OGALL still does not work well. Hudson will fix it next. After the corrections are made, these procedures should be incorporated into the tohban manual. 8.3 Week-16-A/I-1 /Hudson, Ogawara/status OPEN Hudson asks for the link margin of the Wallops station, which fixes the minimum maximum elevation of Yohkoh contacts. Ogawara provides info on the Yohkoh transmitters, if necessary.
