SSOC Tohban's Report for Week 31 ( 27 July - 2 Aug 1998) SSOC : Yamasaki, Kosugi KSC : Yamaguchi, Aoki 0. Meeting Attendance Hara, Kosugi, Linton, Nitta, Ogawara, Sawa, Shirts, Slater, Sterling, Takahashi-M, Takanashi, Watanabe-Te ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Solar Activity Solar activity has been low, in mid GOES B level, throughout the week, but it seemd to increase towards the weekend. On Friday, 31 July, the impulsive phase of two C class flare were observed (!?) by Yohkoh in NIGHT mode, or rigorously speaking, Yohkoh observed only the decay phase. Two more C-class flares occurred on Saturday and Sunday. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. Standard Operations 2.1 SXT Table Uploads The following SXT tables were uploaded last week. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Pass ID Pass Table ID ================================================================ 980727-0514 4 980727 P4 ARS1 DARKCAL 980728-0412 4 980728 P4 ARS1 STD DIF 980730-0102 1 980730 P1 ARS2 HIDA 980730-0309 4 980730 P3 STD+FR 980730-1548 1 980731 P1 ARS2 HIDA2 980731-0310 4 980731 P4 ARS1 STD+FR ---------------------------------------------------------------- 2.2 STT timer setting STT timer was set three times, as listed below, because of a rapid variation in orbital phase of Canopus eclipse. Canopus has been tracked without problems. 1) Tuesday, July 28, P2 (980728-0205) 2) Friday, July 31, P5 (980731-0413) 3) Sunday, Aug. 2, P4 (980802-0311) 2.3 Calibration 2.3.1 HXT Calibration none 2.3.2 BCS Calibration none -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. Errors and Problems 3.1 BCS Errors One BCS error was found at Pass 1 on Monday, July 27, and was immeadiately recovered during the same pass. 3.2 SXT Errors One SXT error was found at Pass 1 on Friday, July 31, and was recovered during the same pass. 3.3 KSC FM-V Personal Computer A trouble of ethernet communication occurred on the FM-V personal computer Monday. The operation was conducted by making use of a workstation. The trouble was pinpointed with the ethernet board in problem replaced by a Fujitsu SE. 3.4 Automated Transmission of New Orbital Elements to JPL Ususally our WS's transfer new orbital elements automatically to JPL and Wallops just after the SSOC mainframe computer received them. Unfortunately this was not the case last week. Our investigation showed that FTP from the mainframe to WS had been done, but no cron job was successfully completed. Greg Slater is still investigating this trouble. 3.5 dsn_conflict Maybe related to the previus trouble, we found Friday that dsn_conflict does not get through, with errors of missing files. Some cron job, which creates the file called by dsn_conflict, seemed not to be properly conducted. Investigation continues. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 4. Special Operations Campaign observations with Hida Observatory was conducted from Thursday through Sunday. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 5. DSN Communications 5.1 DSN Schedule Passes were deleted by SSOC Tohbans as follows. ------------------------------------------------------------------- DSN Schedule Week Deleted Passes =================================================================== Final (Realtime) W31 none Final W32 1 pass deleted by SSOC Preliminary W33 none Strawman W34 69 passes deleted by SSOC ------------------------------------------------------------------- 5.2 Data Transmission from DSN (Refer to /home/flare1/yohkoh/dsn_corrupt/98_31) 199 76 0131 corrupted tape Requested 24 Jul Closed/ correct data 203 76 1825 corrupted tape Requested 24 Jul Closed/ same data 208 76 1626 corrupted tape Requested 28 Jul Closed/ correct data 208 76 1808 corrupted tape Requested 30 Jul corrupted tape Requested 31 Jul 209 76 1502 corrupted tape Requested 30 Jul Closed/ correct data ## DOY-206 W76 1734(WPS Email) Low block count due to 11 meter RH tracking receiver loss comms to antenna controller. Comm failure coused antenna to ascillate, which produced data hits on the downlink during the support. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 6. KSC Pass Conflicts and Schedule One pass was lost due to ASCA and 3, instead of 4, passes due to Nozomi. One pass (Saturday, Aug 1, P5) was returned at the very final stage from Nozomi. In week 32 we will lose 3 passes for Akebono and 1 pass for ASCA. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 7. Hikitsugi Items 7.0 Urgent items. (1) Today is an operation holiday. No command plan and OP have been prepared for Tuesday. (2) Seko san will be off this week, since this week is NEC's summer holidays. 7.1 Tohbans for week 32 (3 - 9 August) SSOC : Takanashi, Takahashi-M KSC : Aoki, Saito-Y 7.2 STT timer setting STT timer setting is due on 4-Aug, Tuesday. Please check the next STT Timer set timing; it is not necessarily the next Tuesday. 7.3 Holiday Schedule The holiday in week 32 will be on 9 August (Sun), JST. 7.4 Update on the Late Arrival of the Final Schedule from Wallops The final schedules for week 32 arrived on Thursday, as we had hoped. 7.5 pr_strawman The tohban checksheet still requests the use of pr_strawman, but this program is not yet available. 7.6 Flare 1 home-directory crash The WS Manager, Shimojo san, reported that the managers had completed replacement of flare1, including recovering of flare1 home directory. Thanks to all who worked hard for this. ============================================================= || The following is the same as the previous week's report || ============================================================= 7.7 DSN selection by the program FMT_WALLOPS The SSOC tohbans should check the ACTIVITY column of the 7dayss-list to make sure that the keyword TKG PASS is not omitted or replaced with another term. This happened last week. The FMT_WALLOPS program searches for TKG PASS and will eliminate passes without this keyword. According to Wallops they will not use other comments in the ACTIVITY columun. But the SSOC tohbans should check this for the next few weeks just to make sure. 7.8 Pass Additions and Wallops Deletions At the meeting it was decided that for the Strawman schedule the SSOC tohbans should select the best DSN passes but, in addition, they should not delete any Wallops passes. After receiving the Preliminary schedule with JPL/DSN deletions, the unnecessary Wallops passes should be deleted. 7.9 DSN scheduling Since mid week 10, 1998, Wallops schedules all DSN passes instead of JPL. The system to communicate with Wallops is still under construction. For details, see the temporary manual in the file ~wallops/README file on flare20. All DSN-related software should be run from an IDL session in the flare20/wallops subdirectory. Please immediately report any problems with the DSN software or errors in the manual to Hudson san. (New week 25) Please retain all Wallops passes in the Strawman cancellation process. We have been informed by Wallops that this is OK. These passes are cancelled by NASA less frequently, so by doing this we avoid days with almost no coverage. 7.10 Bug in op_first_guess SSOC tohbans should be aware of a bug in op_first_guess, e.g., "% OP_START_END: Problem with detection of LOS/AOS/DSN Repro Events". If DSN-related software in the directory ~yohkoh/wallops does not work correctly, check to see if the files being used which you have obtained through ftp from Wallops (e.g., 7dayss.wNN) are written in the same format as the previous weeks' files. We experienced (week 25) some confusion about the timing of KSC AOS and the DAY OG. Please be careful. If there is an KSC-AOS NIGHT one step before the DAY OG, normally the two commands can simply be interchanged and the AOS command switched to DAY. 7.11 BDR trouble (See 'DP error' in "SSOC Tohban's Report for Week 02" in 1998.) A DP error (error code = 90 ->75) was found during the data dump at 980106-0411. 2 of 20 BDR blocks are not accessible. As a result, the capacity of BDR is at the moment nine-tenths that of the normal capacity. This error has not been recovered yet. Please note the special commands, RST BAD BANK DP DC EXEC now routinely appearing in the end of command sheets. This is part of the recovery attempt. 7.12 E-mail communications We rely upon e-mail more and more. For operations-related e-mail, it's hereby suggested that we make it a rule to ACKNOWLEDGE the receipt of any such e-mail message. This applies particularly among SSOC, SXT_CO, KSC and SXT_ST. 7.13 Long Range Schedule Arrangement for Planet-B Planet-B was launched on July 4, 1998 for the mission to Mars. During the flight operation (lasting for twenty six days before the launch window begins), the KSC 20-meter antenna system will be used. After the launch, Planet-B will be tracked by the USD 64m and the newly (to be) installed KSC 34m antenna. Tracking schedule during the flight operation interval will be negotiated among the five teams namely: AKEBONO, YOHKOH, ASCA, HALCA and Planet-B. (Tetsuya WATANABE,NAOJ) * For more information, see a filed report (written in Japanese). ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 8. Action Items (Same as last week's SSOC Report) 8.1 Further software development. Status CONTINUING. It would be greatly appreciated if the SSOC tohbans could recommend any software development that they think will save future tohbans time and which improves the reliability of their work. 8.2 Week-48-A/I-1 /Hudson/status AJAR. PRINT_OGALL still does not work well. Hudson will fix it next. After the corrections are made, these procedures should be incorporated into the tohban manual. === END ===
