SSOC Tohban's Report for Week 34 ( 17 Aug - 23 Aug 1998) SSOC : Nishio, Watanabe_Te KSC : Kano, Hanaoka 0. Meeting Attendance Alexander, Hara, Hudson, Khan, Liu, Sawa, Simnett, Watanabe_Te ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Solar Activity The solar activity was rather high thanks to a new active region NOAA8307, rotating around the east limb. Three X-class flares and five M-class flares were reported during 16 - 21 Aug. Fortunately or unfortunately, almost X-class flare occurred between the first and the second partial eclipses on 21-22 Aug. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. Standard Operations 2.1 SXT Table Uploads The following SXT tables were uploaded last week. ----------------------------------------------------------------- JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID ================================================================= Wednesday 18-Aug-98 15:25 1 980818 P1 ARS0 WSF Wedsnesday 18-AUg-98 18:50 3 980818 P3 ARS1 DARKCAL Thursday 19-Aug-98 14:01 1 980819 P1 ARS0 WSF Thursday 19-Aug-98 17:25 3 980819 P3 ARS1 STD DIF Friday 20-Aug-98 14:16 1 980820 P1 ARS0 WSF Friday 20-Aug-98 17:43 3 980820 P3 ARS1 STD Saturday 21-Aug-98 12:53 1 980821 P1 ARS0 WSF Saturday 21-Aug-98 14:34 2 980821 P2 ARS1 STD ECL Sunday 22-Aug-98 13:09 1 980822 P1 ARS0 WSF Sunday 22-Aug-98 16:35 3 980822 P3 ARS1 STD ----------------------------------------------------------------- 2.2 STT timer setting STT timer was set on Wednesday, Aug 19, P2 (980819-1032). 2.3 Calibration 2.3.1 HXT Calibration HXT cal was performed at 980818-1135, 980819-1032, and -1135. The new gains were set at 980820-1032. They were checked at 980821-0930, 980822- 0927, and -1030. 2.3.2 BCS Calibration None. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. Errors and Problems 3.1 BCS Errors No error reported. 3.2 SXT Errors No error reported. 3.3 Unexpected deletion of Santiago contacts by op_first_guess The problem reported last week was understood. No Santiago pass indications (letter "S") was found in the ascii orbit file, /ydb_isass5/ orbit_raw/980813-0823_16s.ascii), which was created one day later on Thursday redundantly This week tohbans carefully checked the latetest file generated on 19-Aug and found it OK. The duplicated generation may be related to the isass0 renovation. 3.4 Dsn_conflict program problem An IDL program "dsn_conflict" is used for strawman scheduling by Seko_san every Friday. The program did not work this week with an error saying that ASCA_FEM files were not found. Greg Stater looked at the problem and generated the files. 3.5 Fallen into the Safe-Hold On Saturday, after the eclipse observation, KSC had the first Yohkoh contact with the safe-hold mode. Consulting with Fujiwara_san (NAS/NEC), the SSOC tohban decided to continue its normal operation during the weekend. The normal mode recovery operation will start Monday. It is anticipated that the GREAT FLARE occurrence extending the night period of the satellite during the ORBIT TIMER DIS mode might affect the timer control. Sunday 5th pass was activated and the SXT HALT operation was conducted to ensure the safety of SXT CCD. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4. Special Operations The Whole Sun Fortnight Campaign continued for the whole week. It was noticed in Soma_san's prediction that Yohkoh would encounter partial eclipses four times on 21-22 Aug. The annular eclipse was seen in the South Pacific. Yohkoh prepared the special program for these opportunities. During the first and the second eclipses, an M9 flare occured and the later half of the second eclipse data could not be stored in BDR. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5. DSN Communications 5.1 DSN Schedule Passes were added/deleted as follows. ------------------------------------------------------------------- DSN Schedule Week Schedule Changes =================================================================== Final W34 2 passes added by SSOC Final W35 1 pass deleted by Wallops Preliminary W36 16 passed deleted by Wallops Strawman W37 77 passes deleted by SSOC ------------------------------------------------------------------- 5.2 Data Transmission from DSN (Refer to /home/flare1/yohkoh/dsn_corrupt/98_34) 221 74 2024 corrupted tape Requested 14 Aug Closed/ Correct data(18-Aug) 222 66 0706 not received Requested 14 Aug Closed/ Correct data(19-Aug) 222 76 1340 corrupted tape Requested 14 Aug Closed/ Correct data(18-Aug) 222 76 1523 corrupted tape Requested 14 Aug Closed/ No useable data on analog tape.(18-Aug) 223 46 0625 not received Requested 14 Aug Closed/ Correct data(19-Aug) 224 76 1232 corrupted tape Requested 14 Aug Closed/ Correct data(17-Aug) 229 66 0401 not received Requested 20 Aug 230 66 0236 not received Requested 20 Aug 230 76 0910 corrupted tape Requested 21 Aug 230 76 1052 corrupted tape Requested 21 Aug ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6. KSC Pass Conflicts and Schedule In week 35 we will lose 2 passes for Akebono and 6 pass for Halca. Nozomi delta-V operation at KSC is scheduled during 3:45 - 11:30UT on 28- Aug (cold backup) and 0:40 - 9:15UT (main station), 9:15 - 10:45UT (cold backup) on 29-Aug. No loss of Yohkoh contacts is anticipated. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7. Hikitsugi Items 7.1 Tohbans for week 35 (24 - 30 August) SSOC : Liu, Akita KSC : Hanaoka, Ashizawa 7.2 STT timer setting STT timer setting is due on 25-Aug, Tuesday. 7.3 Holiday Schedule The holiday in week 34 will be on 30 August (Sun), JST. ============================================================= || The following is the same as the previous week's report || ============================================================= 7.7 Minimum elevation of Wallops passes According to the tohban manual, DSN passes with elevation between 5 and 9 degrees may be accepted after consulting with someone who knows the DSN situation well (e.g. Te.Watanabe). In today's WOM it has been decided that Wallops passes with elevation larger than 7 degrees can be accepted without such consultation. 7.8 pr_strawman The tohban checksheet still requests the use of pr_strawman, but this program is not yet available. 7.9 DSN selection by the program FMT_WALLOPS The SSOC tohbans should check the ACTIVITY column of the 7dayss-list to make sure that the keyword TKG PASS is not omitted or replaced with another term. This happened last week. The FMT_WALLOPS program searches for TKG PASS and will eliminate passes without this keyword. According to Wallops they will not use other comments in the ACTIVITY columun. But the SSOC tohbans should check this for the next few weeks just to make sure. 7.10 Pass Additions and Wallops Deletions At the meeting it was decided that for the Strawman schedule the SSOC tohbans should select the best DSN passes but, in addition, they should not delete any Wallops passes. After receiving the Preliminary schedule with JPL/DSN deletions, the unnecessary Wallops passes should be deleted. 7.11 DSN scheduling Since mid week 10, 1998, Wallops schedules all DSN passes instead of JPL. The system to communicate with Wallops is still under construction. For details, see the temporary manual in the file ~wallops/README file on flare20. All DSN-related software should be run from an IDL session in the flare20/wallops subdirectory. Please immediately report any problems with the DSN software or errors in the manual to Hudson san. (New week 25) Please retain all Wallops passes in the Strawman cancellation process. We have been informed by Wallops that this is OK. These passes are cancelled by NASA less frequently, so by doing this we avoid days with almost no coverage. a 7.12 Bug in op_first_guess SSOC tohbans should be aware of a bug in op_first_guess, e.g., "%OP_START_END: Problem with detection of LOS/AOS/DSN Repro Events". If DSN-related software in the directory ~yohkoh/wallops does not work correctly, check to see if the files being used which you have obtained through ftp from Wallops (e.g., 7dayss.wNN) are written in the same format as the previous weeks' files. We experienced (week 25) some confusion about the timing of KSC AOS and the DAY OG. Please be careful. If there is an KSC-AOS NIGHT one step before the DAY OG, normally the two commands can simply be interchanged and the AOS command switched to DAY. 7.13 BDR trouble (See 'DP error' in "SSOC Tohban's Report for Week 02" in 1998.) A DP error (error code = 90 ->75) was found during the data dump at 980106-0411. 2 of 20 BDR blocks are not accessible. As a result, the capacity of BDR is at the moment nine-tenths that of the normal capacity. This error has not been recovered yet. Please note the special commands, RST BAD BANK DP DC EXEC now routinely appearing in the end of command sheets. This is part of the recovery attempt. 7.14 E-mail communications We rely upon e-mail more and more. For operations-related e-mail, it's hereby suggested that we make it a rule to ACKNOWLEDGE the receipt of any such e-mail message. This applies particularly among SSOC, SXT_CO, KSC and SXT_ST. 7.15 Long Range Schedule Arrangement for Planet-B Planet-B was launched on July 4, 1998 for the mission to Mars. During the flight operation (lasting for twenty six days before the launch window begins), the KSC 20-meter antenna system will be used. After the launch, Planet-B will be tracked by the USD 64m and the newly (to be) installed KSC 34m antenna. Tracking schedule during the flight operation interval will be negotiated among the five teams namely: AKEBONO, YOHKOH, ASCA, HALCA and Planet-B. (Tetsuya WATANABE,NAOJ) * For more information, see a filed report (written in Japanese). ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8. Action Items (Same as last week's SSOC Report) 8.1 Further software development. Status CONTINUING. It would be greatly appreciated if the SSOC tohbans could recommend any software development that they think will save future tohbans time and which improves the reliability of their work. 8.2 Week-48-A/I-1 /Hudson/status AJAR. PRINT_OGALL still does not work well. Hudson will fix it next. After the corrections are made, these procedures should be incorporated into the tohban manual. === END ===
