SSOC Tohban's Report for Week 35 ( 24 Aug - 30 Aug 1998) SSOC : Akita, Liu KSC : Ashizawa, Hanaoka 0. Meeting Attendance ( Hudson, Khan), Akita, Liu, Sterling, Tonooka, Watanabe_Te ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Solar Activity The solar activity decreased at the beginning of this week and gradually increased later. A new active region, NOAA 8323 appearred at the east limb around 28 Aug. One X-class flares and several C-class flares were reported during 24 - 30 Aug. Unfortunately, YOHKOH SXT missed this 25-Aug X-class flare owing to recovery operation. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. Standard Operations 2.1 SXT Table Uploads The following SXT tables were uploaded last week. ----------------------------------------------------------------- JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID ================================================================= Tuesday 25-Aug-98 10:36 1 980825 P1 ARS1 SPECIAL Tuesday 25-Aug-98 14:01 3 980825 P3 ARS1 STD Wednesday 26-Aug-98 12:36 3 980826 P3 ARS1 FL OBS DIS Thursday 27-Aug-98 12:53 2 980827 P2 ARS1 STD NF Thursday 27-Aug-98 14:36 3 980827 P3 ARS1 STD Friday 28-Aug-98 14:54 4 980828 P4 ARS1 STD DIF Saturday 29-Aug-98 11:45 2 980829 P2 ARS1 STD ----------------------------------------------------------------- 2.2 STT timer setting STT timer was set at pass 2(980825-0825) on 25-Aug (Tue). 2.3 Calibration 2.3.1 HXT Calibration HXT cal was performed at 980825-1135 and 980826-1136 after the new gains were set at 980825-0825. 2.3.2 GRS Calibration GRS cal was performed at 980829-1031 and -1134. At least two other passes are needed to finish this calibration. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. Errors and Problems 3.1 BCS Errors A BCS error occurred during pass 980827-1033, the last pass of that day. It was recovered successfully in pass 980828-0620, the first pass of the following day. 3.2 SXT Errors A 'BIT MAP' error was found at pass 980829-0721, and was cleared by Yobi-C command successfully in the same pass. SXT was halted most of the time during the safe-hold recovery precedure. Due to that, SXT was give 'INVALID MAIL' errors in passes, 980824-0825, -1031,-1135,980825-0722,-0825,980826-0826,-0929. 3.3 Hurricane Bonnie We cancelled several Wallops contacts (5 in total) on 27-Aug and 28-Aug, as they warned us it might be unoperational due to Hurricane Bonnie. 3.4 Safe-hold recovery The safe-hold recovery started at the first pass on Monday(980824-0825) and it was completed at the second pass on Thursday (980827-0826). It took almost 4 days due to unexpectedly large drift of roll angle. Yohkoh fell into the safe-hold mode again soon after the large angle maneuver started at the last pass on Tuesday (980825-1135). So, we had to repeat the same procedure on Wednesday. But this time, safe-hold was disabled during the large angle maneuver. The details of the whole recovery process were already reported by Watanabe(Te)-san via email. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4. Special Operations 4.1 Safe-hold recovery See section 3.4 4.2 Pointing adjustment As the solar image was off from the center after safe-hold recovery, new parameters were given for normal pointing by ROG20h in pass 980828-0620. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5. DSN Communications 5.1 DSN Schedule Passes were added/deleted as follows. ------------------------------------------------------------------- DSN Schedule Week Schedule Changes =================================================================== Final W35 5 passes deleted by SSOC Final W36 3 passes deleted by SSOC Preliminary W37 no passes deleted Strawman W38 69 passes deleted by SSOC ------------------------------------------------------------------- 5.2 Data Transmission from DSN (Refer to /home/flare1/yohkoh/dsn_corrupt/98_35) * 229 66 0401 not received Requested 20 Aug no response 25 Aug Closed/ No data(27-Aug) * 230 66 0236 not received Requested 20 Aug no response 25 Aug Closed/ No data (27-Agu) 230 76 0910 corrupted tape Requested 21 Aug Closed/ same corrupted data(24-Aug) 230 76 1052 corrupted tape Requested 21 Aug Closed/ correct data(24-Aug) ** 230 74 1935 not received Requested 25 Aug Closed/ no data (27-Aug) ** 230 74 2301 not received Requested 25 Aug Closed/ no data (27-Aug) 234 66 0203 not received Requested 25 Aug no response 26 Aug no response 28 Aug 231 66 0111 corrupted tape Requasted 28 Aug 236 16 0719 corrupted tape Requested 28 Aug * DSS-66 DOY-229,230 (CDR Email)-- DSS-66 was not scheduled for Solar-A for either of these requests. DSS-66 was supporting Lunar Prospector. ** DSS-74 DOY-230 1935,2301(WPS Email)-- I regret to inform you that the passes were deleted off the Santiago schedule in error and were not taken by the site... ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6. KSC Pass Conflicts and Schedule In week 36 we will lose 1 pass for Akebono and 3 passes for Halca. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7. Hikitsugi Items 7.1 Tohbans for week 36 (31 August - 6 Sep) SSOC : Tonooka, Sterling KSC : Ashizawa, Miyagoshi 7.2 STT timer setting STT timer setting is due on 1-Sep, Tuesday. 7.3 Holiday Schedule The holiday in week 36 will be on 5 Sept (Sat), JST. ============================================================= || The following is the same as the previous week's report || ============================================================= 7.7 Minimum elevation of Wallops passes According to the tohban manual, DSN passes with elevation between 5 and 9 degrees may be accepted after consulting with someone who knows the DSN situation well (e.g. Te.Watanabe). In today's WOM it has been decided that Wallops passes with elevation larger than 7 degrees can be accepted without such consultation. 7.8 pr_strawman The tohban checksheet still requests the use of pr_strawman, but this program is not yet available. 7.9 DSN selection by the program FMT_WALLOPS The SSOC tohbans should check the ACTIVITY column of the 7dayss-list to make sure that the keyword TKG PASS is not omitted or replaced with another term. This happened last week. The FMT_WALLOPS program searches for TKG PASS and will eliminate passes without this keyword. According to Wallops they will not use other comments in the ACTIVITY columun. But the SSOC tohbans should check this for the next few weeks just to make sure. 7.10 Pass Additions and Wallops Deletions At the meeting it was decided that for the Strawman schedule the SSOC tohbans should select the best DSN passes but, in addition, they should not delete any Wallops passes. After receiving the Preliminary schedule with JPL/DSN deletions, the unnecessary Wallops passes should be deleted. 7.11 DSN scheduling Since mid week 10, 1998, Wallops schedules all DSN passes instead of JPL. The system to communicate with Wallops is still under construction. For details, see the temporary manual in the file ~wallops/README file on flare20. All DSN-related software should be run from an IDL session in the flare20/wallops subdirectory. Please immediately report any problems with the DSN software or errors in the manual to Hudson san. (New week 25) Please retain all Wallops passes in the Strawman cancellation process. We have been informed by Wallops that this is OK. These passes are cancelled by NASA less frequently, so by doing this we avoid days with almost no coverage. a 7.12 Bug in op_first_guess SSOC tohbans should be aware of a bug in op_first_guess, e.g., "%OP_START_END: Problem with detection of LOS/AOS/DSN Repro Events". If DSN-related software in the directory ~yohkoh/wallops does not work correctly, check to see if the files being used which you have obtained through ftp from Wallops (e.g., 7dayss.wNN) are written in the same format as the previous weeks' files. We experienced (week 25) some confusion about the timing of KSC AOS and the DAY OG. Please be careful. If there is an KSC-AOS NIGHT one step before the DAY OG, normally the two commands can simply be interchanged and the AOS command switched to DAY. 7.13 BDR trouble (See 'DP error' in "SSOC Tohban's Report for Week 02" in 1998.) A DP error (error code = 90 ->75) was found during the data dump at 980106-0411. 2 of 20 BDR blocks are not accessible. As a result, the capacity of BDR is at the moment nine-tenths that of the normal capacity. This error has not been recovered yet. Please note the special commands, RST BAD BANK DP DC EXEC now routinely appearing in the end of command sheets. This is part of the recovery attempt. 7.14 E-mail communications We rely upon e-mail more and more. For operations-related e-mail, it's hereby suggested that we make it a rule to ACKNOWLEDGE the receipt of any such e-mail message. This applies particularly among SSOC, SXT_CO, KSC and SXT_ST. 7.15 Long Range Schedule Arrangement for Planet-B Planet-B was launched on July 4, 1998 for the mission to Mars. During the flight operation (lasting for twenty six days before the launch window begins), the KSC 20-meter antenna system will be used. After the launch, Planet-B will be tracked by the USD 64m and the newly (to be) installed KSC 34m antenna. Tracking schedule during the flight operation interval will be negotiated among the five teams namely: AKEBONO, YOHKOH, ASCA, HALCA and Planet-B. (Tetsuya WATANABE,NAOJ) * For more information, see a filed report (written in Japanese). ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8. Action Items (Same as last week's SSOC Report) 8.1 Further software development. Status CONTINUING. It would be greatly appreciated if the SSOC tohbans could recommend any software development that they think will save future tohbans time and which improves the reliability of their work. 8.2 Week-48-A/I-1 /Hudson/status AJAR. PRINT_OGALL still does not work well. Hudson will fix it next. After the corrections are made, these procedures should be incorporated into the tohban manual. === END ===
