SSOC Tohban's Report for Week 42 ( 12-Oct to 18-Oct 1998) SSOC : Yoshida, McKenzie KSC : Morimoto, Sasaki 0. Meeting Attendance Yoshida, McKenzie, Ishizaki, Nakakubo, Hudson, Sterling, Ogawara, Kosugi, Watanabe, and Sawa. ---------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Solar Activity Solar activity was high last week. Yohkoh observed many C-class flares. AR 8355 whose activity was very high in week 41 is on declining phase. AR 8358 and AR 8360 are on rising phase, and the activity will be higher in week 43. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. Standard Operations 2.1 SXT Table Uploads The following SXT tables were uploaded last week. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- UT Time (JST Time) Pass Table ID ========================================================================= 13-Oct-98 16:26 UT (Wed 14-Oct-98 01:26 JST) P4 "981013 P2 ARS1 DARKCAL" 14-Oct-98 13:17 UT (Wed 14-Oct-98 22:17 JST) P2 "981014 P2 ARS1 DIFF" 15-Oct-98 13:34 UT (Thu 15-Oct-98 22:34 JST) P2 "981015 P2 ARS1 STD" 16-Oct-98 15:35 UT (Sat 17-Oct-98 00:35 JST) P4 "981016 P4 ARS1 STD" ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2.2 STT timer setting STT timer was set during pass 2 (981013-1033) on 13-OCT (Tuesday UT). The next timer setting should be on 20-OCT (UT), Tuesday. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. Errors and Problems 3.1 BCS Errors Memory Check Sum Error was found in the last pass on Monday (981012-1240). We did the BCS recovery plan during the first pass on Tuesday (981013-0723). But we failed to clear the error because we did the operation with old manuals. Again we did the recovery operation in the second pass (981013-1033), and the error was cleared. (See Appendix 9.1) 3.2 SXT Errors The terminal of the mainframe computer at KSC was unstable last week. We failed to upload the table plan on Monday because of the logon error on the terminal. The running table on Monday was standard one, so there was no problem. The terminal was tuned by Fujitu Engineer on Tuesday night, and that works well now. But we should get a new stable terminal. 3.3 S3500 (Operation computer at KSC) Out of Control We encountered the out-of-control error of S3500 two times from W41 to W42. One (last week) occurred during the DL-data transmission (See W41 SSOC Report). One (this week) was hung-up error which occurred after the passes on Friday. 3.4 Orbital Elements was not sent automatically by YS on ISASS0 & FAX Transmission Error to JPL DIEM TU (preset #03) We didn't receive the e-mail of the New Orbital Elements Transmission which should be automatically sent by YS on ISASS0. We made the data-sheets manually and sent then to JPL via FAX. We sent JPL Len Efron (preset #05), JPL M-M Navigation (preset #06) successfully, but failed to send to JPL (preset #03) with error 'busy'. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4. Special Operations 4.1 HXT Fine Gain Adjustment HXT Fine Gain Adjustment Operation was done during the last pass on Monday. The new OG modified for the adjustment was uploaded in the first pass on Monday (981012-0929). The adjustment operation was scheduled in the second pass (981012-1136), but this was not done in the pass because KSC Tohban was confused by the terminal error for SXT Table Upload. The operation was done successfully in the last pass (981012-1240). HXT CAL to check the new fine gain was done on passes 981014-1136, 981015-1135 and 981016-1135. 4.2 Special Operation to avoid the Typhoon #10 damage. The huge-strong Typhoon #10 passed KSC on Saturday night. We uploaded the special OP in the pass (981016-1032) which covered from Friday night to Sunday night without pass 4 contact on Saturday. (Sunday is not holiday this week. See below). (See Appendix 9.2) The typhoon passed before the contacts on Saturday, but pass 3 (981017-0929) on Saturday was canceled because of some troubles on MS operation computer, and pass 4 (981017-1032) was canceled because of the lack of the contact OG on the special OP. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5. DSN Communications 5.1 DSN Schedule Passes were added/deleted as follows. ------------------------------------------------------------------- DSN Schedule Week Schedule Changes =================================================================== Final 42 1 pass deleted Final 43 1 pass deleted Preliminary 44 No pass deleted Strawman 45 No pass deleted ------------------------------------------------------------------- The strawman schedule didn't reach us last week. So the tohban this week should do the duty of the cancelation. 5.2 Data Transmission from DSN -(Refer to /home/flare1/yohkoh/dsn_corrupt/98_42)-------------- 261 16 2326 corrupted Requested 24 Sep no response tape Requested 28 Sep no response tape Requested 02 Oct no response tape Requested 07 Oct no response tape Requested 14 Oct Closed/ same data(15-Oct) 270 16 1911 corrupted tape Requested 02 Oct no response tape Requested 07 Oct no response tape Requested 14 Oct Closed/ correct data(15-Oct) 271 66 0755 corrupted tape Requested 02 Oct no response tape Requested 07 Oct no response tape Requested 14 Oct Closed/ same data(16-Oct) 272 76 1303 corrupted tape Requested 01 Oct corrupted tape Requested 09 Oct no response tape Requested 14 Oct 273 76 0955 corrupted tape Requested 09 Oct no response tape Requested 14 Oct 279 76 0630 corrupted tape Requested 09 Oct no response tape Requested 14 OCt 279 76 0812 corrupted tape Requested 09 Oct no response tape Requested 14 Oct 279 76 0954 corrupted tape Requested 09 Oct no response tape Requested 14 Oct MEMO: Ueda_san(ASCA ops) forwarded the Email to me on 14-Oct. Rawland-san has recently transferred to a new position at Goddard Space Flight Center working on the Crustal Dynamics Project. My group currently consisits of myself as NOPE, Romulo Paredes as Deputy NOPE, Bruce Pivar as assistant NOPE. ---------------------------------------------------------------- 5.3 ADD_DSN --- Quote from W40-98 SSOC Report --- The program ADD_DSN was improved to make it possible to have multiple additions requested. The idea now is to run this program on Friday, after the final schedule has been received and big gaps have been noticed. To deal with multiple requests, simply run ADD_DSN repeatedly; each time it will add one group of passes to the output (request) file. Adding groups gives DSN more flexibility. We ran this program on Tuesday on the Week 41 Preliminary schedule, generating the file sola_add.w41, which we ftp'd to Wallops. This seems to be preferable to waiting for the final schedule - our idea is that the schedulers can now have another iteration from us before making up the final. In this case, most of the passes in the 6 add groups (one dump requested per day) were the Madrid passes. The result for the Week 41 ADD request was the following: Of the six requested time intervals, we received one additional pass. This was not a DSN contact but a Wallops contact - DSS-82 (see below). This is our first experience with this DSS number and we have reported its appearance to Kato_sensei. In spite of this almost complete failure to fill in the gap between KSC and Wallops for Week 41, we feel that the attempt should be made again. We have had no direct e-mail communication with the Wallops schedulers about this, so presumably the ftp file was properly received and dealt with there. ------------------------------------ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6. KSC Pass Conflicts and Schedule In week 43, 6 KSC passes were lost to AKEBONO, and 5 to HALCA. Now, Yohkoh visible passes are synchronized with the passes of HALCA and AKEBONO, so we lost many passes these 3 weeks. After 01-Nov-98, this sever conflict will be got rid of except for the normal conflict with ASCA around pass 4 or 5. Next sever conflict phase will start from late DEC-98. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7. Hikitsugi Items 7.1 Tohbans for week 43 (19-Oct - 25-Oct) SSOC : Ishizaki, Nakakubo KSC : T. Morimoto, Kozu 7.2 STT timer setting STT timer setting is due on Tuesday October 20. 7.3 Holiday Schedule A Special Operation of GEOTAIL was done on Sunday 18-OCT-98. So the holiday schedule was changed to Monday 19-OCT-98. The next holiday will be Sunday, 25-Oct-98. 7.4 Manual and Checksheet A new version of the English Tohban Manual was generated during week 98_36, along with a corresponding new Tohban Checksheet. The new (and all future) Tohbans are requested to note any changes or mistakes in the manual, and to notify A. Sterling of any changes. If the changes involve the DSN procedures or the ~yohkoh/wallops/README file, Hugh Hudson san should also be notified. Current Version Yohkoh Tohban Duties Manual rev. 4-Sep-98, A. Sterling README(Manual for Wallops/DSN Operation ver. 5.2 28-Sep-98 H. Hudson 7.5 Some Problems in OP_FIRST_GUESS In some cases, OP_FIRST_GUESS fails to pick up DSN passes. (See Section 8) Tohbans should check OPs and DSN schedules carefully. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8. Action Items 8.1 Further software development. Status CONTINUING. It would be greatly appreciated if the SSOC tohbans could recommend any software development that they think will save future tohbans time and which improves the reliability of their work. 8.2 Week-48-A/I-1 /Hudson/status AJAR. PRINT_OGALL still does not work well. Hudson will fix it next. 8.3 Week-37-98-AI??-1 / "Possible OP_FIRST_GUESS Problem." / ?? / status ?? --- Quote from W37-98 SSOC Report --- OP_FIRST_GUESS failed to pick up a couple of passes from the solass.w37 DSN schedule last week. Here is an example: . . 251 2159 2224 2238 2248 DSS-76 SOL R TKG PASS 8036 xxxxxx- xxx *---------- *WED 09 Sep *---------- 252 2342 0007 0020 0030 DSS-76 SOL R TKG PASS 8037 xxxxxx- xxx 252 0125 0150 0201 0211 DSS-76 SOL R TKG PASS 8038 xxxxxx- xxx 252 1852 1917 1929 1939 DSS-76 SOL R TKG PASS 8049 xxxxxx- xxx In this case, the missed pass was the one beginning at 0007. The problem seems to be that the DSN START time and the BOT times are for different DOY dates. We edited the solass.w37 file so that this line read: 251 2342 0007 0020 0030 DSS-76 SOL R TKG PASS 8037 xxxxxx- xxx OP_FIRST_GUESS then was able to pick up this pass. The other pass that OP_FIRST_GUESS missed had a similar form and was handled in the same way. We notified Jim Lemen of this problem. He hopes to look into this problem over the next couple of months. In the meantime, Tohbans will have to be on the lookout for this sort of problem. (Thanks go to Asizawa-san, who first noticed the missing pass even though he is "green" and was working alone at KSC.) We wonder if this problem has occurred in the past?? ---------------------------------------------------------------- 8.4 Week-38-98-AI??-1 / "Possible OP_FIRST_GUESS Problem 2." / ?? / status ?? Although the newest version of DSN final schedule is ./solarss.w39.# (#= version number), the OP_FIRST_GUESS uses ./solarss.w39 . This problem is not severe but better to be fixed. 8.5 Week-40-98 / Wallops file version number / Hudson/ OPEN Revised Wallops scheduling files now have extensions in their names. For example, the revised strawman.w43 is called strawman.w43.1. Some of our software gets confused and needs to be patched. 8.6 Week-42-98 / Mainframe Terminal for SXT TABLE UPLOAD / H. Hara / OPEN --- Quote from W42-98 SSOC Report --- The terminal of the mainframe computer at KSC was unstable last week. We failed to upload the table plan on Monday because of the logon error on the terminal. The running table on Monday was standard one, so there was no problem. The terminal was tuned by Fujitu Engineer on Tuesday night, and that works well now. But we should get a new stable terminal. ---------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9 Appendix 9.1 Current BCS Recovery Plan Current BCS Recovery Plan is as follows. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Comment Subroutine MEMCHK (1.5 min) Upload time on 981013-0723 BCS CPU DIS 11:21:49 BCS ADRS-SET 00-00 11:21:56 BCS BC EXEC 11:22:39 MANU FL H (Night Only) 11:22:45 BCS MEM H 11:22:58 ACS MOD H (Night Only) 11:23:16 Comment Subroutine MEMLD (2.5 min) Upload time on 981013-0723 BCS ENA DRCT DEC 11:23:31 BCS CPU ENA 11:23:36 BCS KECOPY 11:23:41 BCS CPU DIS 11:23:48 ROG #69H (105Dec) 11:24:02 ROG #6AH (106Dec) 11:24:24 ROG #6BH (107Dec) 11:24:46 ROG #6CH (108Dec) 11:25:06 ROG #65H (101Dec) Forgot to upload Comment Subroutine SUMRST (1.5 min) Upload time on 981013-1033 ROG #68H (104Dec) 16:35:17 ROG #60H ( 96Dec) 16:35:40 BCS BC ENA 85-0A BCS BC EXEC 16:36:09 BCS BC ENA 85-0A BCS BC EXEC 16:36:24 ---------------------------------------------------------------- During the first pass (981013-0723) on 13-OCT-98, we operated ---- 981013-0723 --------------- TMX H REP OP STOP OP WRITE TCU MEM H ACS MOD H SXT CTL MANU ;This command is not necessary # of MS ERROR = 1 We forgot to upload ROG #65H. Yoshida) joined to the operation from SSOC as the PI commander for the recovery plan. I used the old manual which lacks ROG 65H. The NEC commander at KSC cautioned me that we didn't upload ROG 65H, but I could not understand the caution. During the next pass (981013-1033), we operated ---- 981013-1033 --------------- TMX H REP <20m phai ANT Rotation> ROG #65H (101Dec) # of MS ERROR = 0 BDR REC -------------------------------- , and clear the error. It takes about 7 minutes to do this operation. When we want to do this operaition during short time passes with elevation 10 degrees such as the pass 981013-0723, I think we need to remove some commands, the first subroutine MEMCHK. 9.2 TYPHOON Operation ---------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 16 Oct 1998 17:33:33 +0900 (JST) From: Tsuyoshi Yoshida Subject: Typhoon Operation Change of the Yohkoh Operation due to Typhoon $1 KSC CONTACT 19981016 Pass 1 10:27(19:27JST) Normal-OP WR (Prepared) 19981016 Pass 2 HALCA 19981016 Pass 3 AKEBONO 19981016 Pass 4 15:34(00:34JST) TYPHOON OP WR, SXT TBL WR 19981016 Pass 5 17:17(02:17JST) HXT CAL TYPHOON Hit Start 19981017 00:00(09:00JST) 19981017 Pass 1 AKEBONO 19981017 Pass 2 HALCA 19981017 Pass 3 14:08(23:08JST) Normal-OP WR (Prepared) 19981017 Pass 4 15:51(00:51JST) Normal 19981017 Pass 5 17:34(02:34JST) Normal TYPHOON Hit END 19981018 00:00(09:00JST) 19981018 Pass 0 GEOTAIL 19981018 Pass 1 AKEBONO 19981018 Pass 2 12:42(21:42JST) OP(Only Pass2-Pass5) WR 19981018 Pass 3 HALCA 19981018 Pass 4 16:08(01:08JST) OP(Sun-Tue) WR (Prepared) SXT TBL WR 19981018 Pass 5 17:52(02:52JST) Normal 19981019 Holiday 19981020 Pass 2 11:34(20:34JST) Normal OP WR (Next Tohban's Duty) $2 Typhoon OP The Typhoon OP will be uploaded on pass 4 Today(16-OCT-1998).
