SSOC Tohban's Report for Week 52 and Week 01 (21-Dec-98 -- 4-Jan-99) SSOC : H. Nakajima & T. Sakao KSC : Te. Watanabe & Y. Nishino(*) (*) until Dec.21 0. Meeting Attendance Hara, Khan, Kosugi, Ogawara, Sakao, Sato, Watanabe ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Solar Activity Solar activity was relatively high during week 52, showing three GOES M-class events on Dec. 23, 24, and 25. It seems that the peak timings of soft X-ray emission for all of the three events have been successfully observed with Yohkoh. Two additional M-class flares were observed in week 01 (Dec. 28 and 29). ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. Standard Operations 2.1 SXT Table Uploads The following SXT tables were uploaded in weeks 52/01. ===================================================== UT Time Pass Table ID ===================================================== (w52) 21-DEC-98 07:00 3 981221 P3 ARS1 DARKCAL 22-DEC-98 07:10 4 981222 P4 ARS1 STD 23-DEC-98 05:40 3 981223 P3 ARS1 STD 24-DEC-98 04:20 2 981224 P2 ARS1 STD+DIFF 07:40 4 981224 P5 ARS1 STD 25-DEC-98 02:50 2 981225 P2 ARS1 STD 26-DEC-98 03:10 2 981226 P2 ARS1 STD (w01) [28-DEC-98 05:20 4 981228 P4 ARS1 DARKCAL] (*) 29-DEC-98 00:30 1 981229 P1 ARS1 DARKCAL 05:40 4 981229 P4 ARS1 STD+DIFF 30-DEC-98 00:50 2 981230 P2 ARS1 NEWYEAR ===================================================== (*) cancelled due to a real-time flare 2.2 STT timer setting The STT timer was set during pass 4 (981222-0515) on 22-Dec-98 (Tuesday UT) and pass 3 (981229-0308) on 29-Dec-98 (Tuesday UT). The next timer setting should be on 5-Jan-99 (Tuesday UT). ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. Errors and Problems 3.1 BCS Errors Since no count output was seen in BCS_24HR_PLOT, KSC tohban executed BCS recovery commands during Pass 5 (981226-0517) on 26-Dec-98, although there was no apparent error status for BCS. It turned out, after investigation by Watanabe san, Khan san, and Shimizu san, that the absence of BCS counts in BCS_24HR_PLOT was related to the software (or observing log files) itself and may have nothing to do with BCS hardware. 3.2 SXT Errors None. 3.3 BDR Anomaly None. 3.4 DSN (a) Final Schedule for W01 On Dec. 25 we requested cancellation of two DSN passes from the week 01 Final Schedule. However, it was not reflected in the revised Final Schedule (Ver. 01) which we received on Dec. 29. One of the DSN passes which had to be cancelled was on Dec. 28. We again requested cancellation of the two passes. (b) New Antenna ID in the Madrid Station Recently, Madrid station started to use another antenna ID of DSS-61 in addition to DSS-66 (see below). Since ISAS gateway does not accept this new ID at this moment, a total of four DSN downlinked data with this ID have been rejected at the gateway. Watanabe san has been asking Yamada san (who is responsible for the gateway) to modify the gateway to accept the new ID. After the modification is completed, Seko san will ask re-transmission for the four data. > From: Yoshiko Seko [SMTP:seko@flare20.solar.isas.ac.jp] > Sent: Thursday, December 24, 1998 8:47 PM > To: CDR@jjpl.jpl.nasa.gov > Cc: Stefan.Waldherr@jpl.nasa.gov; RParedes@jftl.jpl.nasa.gov; > BPivar@jftl.jpl.nasa.gov; yohkoh@flare1.solar.isas.ac.jp; > sho@sirius.isas.ac.jp; seko@flare20.solar.isas.ac.jp > Subject: CDR Replay request(DOY-340) > > CDR REPLAY REQUEST>>> > > DATE: 12/25/98 REQUESTERS NAME: Yoshiko Seko PHONE#:81-42-759-8398 > SPACECRAFT NAME: SOLAR-A SPACECRAFT NUMBER: 164 > DESTINATION CODE: 4A DESTINATION ADDRESS: 042.0.0 > > ALL TIMES REQUESTED SHOULD BE EARTH RECEIVE TIME > DSS 66 DOY/START TIME: 340/2103 Z DOY/END TIME: 340/2112 Z CDR > DATA TYPE: sent 361/0423z > DSS 66 DOY/START TIME: 340/2244 Z DOY/END TIME: 340/2255 Z CDR > DATA TYPE: sent 361/0458z as > > DSS61 support. (c) `Absence' of Telemetry Downlink at Madrid The following DSN problem, which appeared in week 51, is still open; we haven't got any reply from DSN. SSOC tohbans should keep their eyes on this issue. ===== From: "Pivar, Bruce" To: "'Yoshiko Seko'" The SOLAR A track on DSS66 for Day of Year 349 (AOS at 2005) at DSS-66 had no telemetry output. Best AGC was negative 135 dbm. Please do not expect a playback for this pass. (reference DR No. L02800). We have checked the op, and found no prblem. We are asking them whether this is DSN problem. ===== ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4. KSC Pass Conflicts and Schedule In week 52, we gave 1 pass to HALCA, and 6 passes to AKEBONO, and 1 pass to NOZOMI. In week 01, we gave 1 pass to ASCA. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7. Hikitsugi Items 7.1 Tohbans for week 02 (04-Jan-99 -- 11-Jan-99) SSOC : H. Hara, J. Sato KSC : Y. Kato, Y. Iizuka ---------------------------------------------------------------- 7.2 STT timer setting The next timer setting should be done on Tuesday, 5-Jan-99 (UT). ---------------------------------------------------------------- 7.3 Holiday Schedule The holiday in week 02 will be on Sunday, 10-Jan-99 (JST). ---------------------------------------------------------------- 7.4 Manual and Checksheet A new version of the English Tohban Manual was generated during week 98_36, along with a corresponding new Tohban Checksheet. The new (and all future) Tohbans are requested to note any changes or mistakes in the manual, and to notify A. Sterling of any changes. If the changes involve the DSN procedures or the ~yohkoh/wallops/README file, Hugh Hudson san should also be notified. Current Version Yohkoh Tohban Duties Manual Rev. 4-Sep-98, A. Sterling README (Manual for Wallops/DSN Operations) Ver.5.2 28-Sep-98, H. Hudson The Japanese SSOC Tohban Manual was also modified on 23-Nov-98 by Ishii and Ichimoto. ---------------------------------------------------------------- 7.5 Some Problems in OP_FIRST_GUESS - DSN passes In some cases, OP_FIRST_GUESS fails to pick up DSN passes (See Section 8.3). Tohbans should check OPs and DSN schedules carefully. - Maximum Elevation Owing to a difference in the supposed Yohkoh maximum elevation between command sheet (78.6 degree) and weekly satellite schedule (82.5 degree or 80.1 degree in AOSLOS), 20m antenna at KSC had to be rotated suddenly in the second pass on Dec. 4 (981204-0929). As a result, a part of data was lost during the rotation. Tohbans should use parameters written in the weekly satellite schedule made by NASDA, which are the most reliable. ---------------------------------------------------------------- 7.6 DSN Santiago Station DSN Santiago Station(#74) has been not available since 1 Oct. 1998. ---------------------------------------------------------------- 7.7 DSN Pass Additions (from week48_98 report) Yohkoh loses DSN passes as follows: 1) Canceled due to conflicts with ASCA 2) Canceled because Santiago is unavailable 3) Canceled by the SSOC tohbans 4) Deleted by DSN The tohbans could compare the STRAWMAN, PRELIMINARY and FINAL schedules for a given week to see if some of the passes lost by case (4) could be replaced by ones from case (3). This means that it might be possible to request pass additions for the PRELIMINARY and FINAL week schedules from among the requested STRAWMAN cancellations (case (3)). The routine to use is ADD_DSN: e.g., IDL> add_dsn, 49 Decide on the complete list of passes to be added and select them like cancel_dsn. Then ftp and email the appropriate file. 7.8 Mainframe operation schedule between the end of this year and the beginning of next year The year-end tracking of Yohkoh is scheduled at 2:25UT on 31 Dec. 1998. New year tracking of Yohkoh will start at 21:13UT on 4 Jan. 1999. 7.9 One digit week number In some idl procedures, week numbers are assumed to be two digits. However, FTPed files have only one digits in early weeks of the year (1-9). Please rename the file numbers or change the idl procedure. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8. Action Items 8.1 Further software development. Status CONTINUING. It would be greatly appreciated if the SSOC tohbans could recommend any software development that they think will save future tohbans time and which improves the reliability of their work. ---------------------------------------------------------------- 8.2 Week-48-A/I-1 /Hudson/status AJAR. PRINT_OGALL still does not work well. Hudson will fix it. ---------------------------------------------------------------- 8.3 Week-37-98-AI??-1 / "Possible OP_FIRST_GUESS Problem." / ?? / status ?? --- Quote from W37-98 SSOC Report --- OP_FIRST_GUESS failed to pick up a couple of passes from the solass.w37 DSN schedule last week. Here is an example: . . 251 2159 2224 2238 2248 DSS-76 SOL R TKG PASS 8036 xxxxxx- xxx *---------- *WED 09 Sep *---------- 252 2342 0007 0020 0030 DSS-76 SOL R TKG PASS 8037 xxxxxx- xxx 252 0125 0150 0201 0211 DSS-76 SOL R TKG PASS 8038 xxxxxx- xxx 252 1852 1917 1929 1939 DSS-76 SOL R TKG PASS 8049 xxxxxx- xxx In this case, the missed pass was the one beginning at 0007. The problem seems to be that the DSN START time and the BOT times are for different DOY dates. We edited the solass.w37 file so that this line read: 251 2342 0007 0020 0030 DSS-76 SOL R TKG PASS 8037 xxxxxx- xxx OP_FIRST_GUESS then was able to pick up this pass. The other pass that OP_FIRST_GUESS missed had a similar form and was handled in the same way. We notified Jim Lemen of this problem. He hopes to look into this problem over the next couple of months. (We wonder if this problem has occurred in the past??) In the meantime, the tohbans will have to be on the lookout for this sort of problem. ---------------------------------------------------------------- 8.4 Week-48-98 / DSN Pass Additions Procedure / Sterling / OPEN Sterling-san will contact Ogawara-san and Lemen-san to determine a procedure acceptable to DSN to be used for DSN Planning (check policy regarding Wallops passes) and Pass Addition Requests. ---------------------------------------------------------------- === END ===
