SSOC Tohban Report for Week 39 (20-Sep-99 -- 26-Sep-99) SSOC: M.Yamaguchi, S.Watari / K.Marubashi KSC: K.Fujiki, S.Kato 0. Meeting Attendance Kosugi, Ogawara, Hara, Watanabe, Sakao, Hagino, Khan, Weber, Yamaguchi -------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Solar Activity Solar activity was so quiet through the week, but the GOES plot shows some C-class flares and there were no flares larger than C-class after 23-Sep-99 (UT). -------------------------------------------------------------- 2. Standard Operations 2.1 SXT Table Uploads The following SXT tables were uploaded during week 39: ================================================== UT Date & Time Pass Table ID ================================================== 19-Sep-99 17:31 1 990919 P1 ARS1 STD 20-Sep-99 19:26 3 990920 P3 ARS1 DARK 21-Sep-99 16:16 1 990921 P1 ARS0 IL VER1 21-Sep-99 19:40 3 990921 P3 ARS1 STD 25-Sep-99 18:52 3 990925 P3 ARS1 WEND ================================================== 2.2 STT Timer setting STT timer was set during Pass 3 of 21-Sep-99 (UT). The next Timer Set is due on Tuesday, 28-Sep-99 (UT). -------------------------------------------------------------- 3. Special Operations 3.1 HXT Calibrations We carried out regular HXT calibrations as follows: ========================================= Pass ID UT Date Pass ========================================= 990925-1031 25-Sep-99 (Sat) 1 990925-1135 25-Sep-99 (Sat) 2 ========================================= The following HXT calibration is scheduled. ========================================= Pass ID UT Date Pass ========================================= 990927-0929 27-Sep-99 (Mon) 1 ========================================= 3.2 Recovery of OP-control Yohkoh was out of OP-control for two days due to an uplink failure caused by trouble of KSC transmitting system and the typhoon #18. Special commands were sent to Yohkoh to upload a new OP on pass 1, 24-Sep-99 (UT), the first contact after the partial recovery of KSC transmitting system. -------------------------------------------------------------- 4. Errors and Problems 4.1 BCS Error None 4.2 SXT Error None 4.3 Problems in KSC Uplink System KSC uplink system had a trouble on 23-Sep-99 (JST) because 20m antenna was struck by a lightning. Only receiving operation was done during 5 contacts on 22-Sep-99 (UT). The system check was executed but had to be suspended about 23:00, 23-Sep-99 (JST) because of typhoon. All Yohkoh operations on 23-Sep-99 (UT) were canceled as a result. The uplink system partly recovered by the time of the first KSC pass on 24-Sep-99 (UT), and a new OP was uploaded. The recovery of the system was not completed, the level of transmitted signals was not sufficient for low elevation angles (< about 20 deg). On Sunday (JST), the system was already completed. Hara-san checked the status of onboard instruments with data from the last contact at KSC on 22-Sep-99 (UT). It was concluded that the status of each instrument was on the safer side, and would not cause any serious problems for the time being till the recovery of commands. 4.4 Network Problem between Sagamihara and KSC SXT tables scheduled for upload on 24-Sep-99 (UT) were not transfered to KSC MS computer, though attempted by SXT_CO. Consequently, 2 scheduled SXT tables were not uploaded at KSC contacts on 24-Sep-99 (UT). -------------------------------------------------------------- 5. NASA Station Scheduling 5.1 Contact pass cancelations/additions The following DSN/NASA passes were added/deleted: ==================================================================== DSN/NASA Schedule Week Schedule Changes ==================================================================== Real-time 39 3 cancellations by SSOC Final 40 7 cancellations by SSOC 1 addition by SSOC Preliminary 41 1 cancellation by SSOC 4 additions by SSOC(*) Strawman 41(**) 74 cancellations: conflicts 21, Santiago 3, and 50 by SSOC 42 79 cancellations: conflicts 26, and 53 by SSOC ==================================================================== (*) Wallops pass on 05-Oct-99 (UT) are cancelled by NASA, so SSOC Tohban requested one Canberra pass and three Goldstone passes instead. (**) The schedule planning at Wallops was delayed due to a hurrican. We received an e-mail message from NASCOM about the passes with no downlink, though scheduled. This resulted from an uplink failure (see 4.3). We are wondering who is responsible for DSN cancellations in such cases. SSOC Tohban? --> Watanabe san said 'Yes'. 5.2 Data Transmission from NASA Ground Stations -(From /home/flare1/yohkoh/dsn_corrupt/99_39)--------------- 254 80 1433 corrupted tape requested 14-Sep corrupted tape requested 21-Sep Closed/ same data 254 80 1759 corrupted tape requested 14-Sep corrupted tape requested 21-Sep Closed/ same data 257 80 1331 corrupted tape requested 21-Sep 262 80 0751 corrupted tape requested 21-Sep 262 80 1114 corrupted tape requested 21-Sep 258 66 0531 12% missing requested 21-Sep Closed/ correct data(21-Sep) 263 80 0805 corrupted tape requested 24-Sep -------------------------------------------------------------- 6. KSC Pass Conflicts and Schedule In Week 39, 10 KSC contacts were lost, 10 to ASCA. One additional contact was actually donated to ASCA on 24-Sep-99 (UT) (pass 4), because ASCA failed in uploading OP on its scheduled pass. In Week 40, 11 KSC contacts will be lost, 11 to ASCA. Note: For future weeks, it would be nice if Yohkoh could get passes 4 and 5 prior to each weekend operation, and passes 1 and 2 immediately following. Doing this would allow us to retain the maximum number of NASA passes through the weekend. -------------------------------------------------------------- 7. Hikitsugi Items 7.1 Tohbans for Week 40 SSOC: M.Hagino, J.Khan KSC: S.Kato / M.Nishio, Y.Saito 7.2 STT Timer Setting The next STT TIMER SET is due on 28-Sep-99 (UT). 7.3 Holiday Schedule Next Yohkoh holiday will be Sunday, 03-Oct-99 (JST). 7.4 Final Schedule Format The DSN Final Schedules since w39 were not readable by op_first_guess in its original form. This is the same problem which has been reported for these weeks. There are 5-digit numbers in PASS NO. column of final schedule. Once the leading "4" is manually removed, the problem was fixed. Part-time tohban Hudson has now repaired FMT_WALLOPS, the key routine involved in preparing the schedule databases. The patch executes the brute-force solution describe above automatically. This is now on line, and if there are problems, please inform Hudson immediately. FMT_WALLOPS worked well for 7dayss.w## file with 5-digit PASS NO. in week 39. FMT_WALLOPS returns solass.w## files with 4-digit PASS NO. 7.5 Final Schedule for Week 40 Many DSN wallops pass on 01-Oct-99(UT) are cancelled by NASA. The next SSOC Tohban should request other DSN contacts. 7.6 Tohban Manual The English-language version of the Tohban Manual has been updated recently and should be considered authoritative. The corresponding checksheet is also new (August 1999). ------------- The Following is Unchanged from Last Week -------------- 8.1 Software problems pr_gev with /hc keyword produces a temporary output file but does not print it at the printer. 8.2 If possible, please schedule terminator opportunities on any weekend table (i.e., if room permits). 8.3 KSC pass conflicts ASCA conflicts cause the loss of about 10 KSC contacts per week at this time. We do not know which contacts Yohkoh will lose until the weekly meeting. Santiago contacts occur on the same orbits as KSC contacts. Therefore, keep as many Santiago contacts as possible in the DSN Strawman and Preliminary Forecasts. 8.4 Command glossary We need a shorthand glossary for common OP and command-sheet commands. This already exists pretty much in the Sakao manual in Japanese, and the Week 26 tohbans started accumulating an English version on "yohkoh.glossary" 8.5 OP_FIRST_GUESS problem (w38) In a situation with two KSC cancellations on each of two days (a rare condition) the BDR optimization feature of OP_FIRST_GUESS crashed. After experimentation, we found that it ran OK without the final cancellation request (two the first day, but just the first one on the second day). The second one then had to be removed manually. Records of the problem were forwarded to Jim Lemen, but no answer had arrived at the time of writing. === END ===
