1 May 1995 J. Lemen SXT CHIEF OBSERVER REPORT AND TABLE PLAN SXT TABLE PLAN FOR WEEK 18 (1 May - 8 May 1995 JST) Loren Acton arrives at ISAS today and will take over as Chief Observer on Wednesday. Given the very low solar activity level, we plan to engage in a filament watch campaign during most of the week. This plan will be modified if the solar activity level changes. The observing objectives of this plan are: - Filament watch observing table for most of the week. - Dark Calibration on Wednesday. - Continuation of terminator-offpointing campaign. Could the SSOC tohbans please fax the OP list to D-tou when it contains a terminator so that the Chief Observer can track the terminators. Some changes to this plan are likely. The Tohbans should make sure to check the faxes from the Chief Observer. The SXT Table Plan for the week is as follows: KSC Time (start) in JST Pass Table ID Comments _____________(= UT + 9 hrs)______#_______________________________ Monday ************** NO TABLE UPLOAD ********************* Tuesday ( 1-May-95) 21:55 2 950501 P2 ARS2 FIL+LONG Thursday ( 3-May-95) 01:41 4 950502 P4 ARS2 DKCAL+FIL Thursday ( 3-May-95) 20:51 2 950503 P2 ARS2 FIL+LONG Friday ( 4-May-95) 21:10 2 950504 P2 ARS2 FIL+LONG Saturday ( 5-May-95) 19:47 2 950505 P2 ARS2 FIL+LONG Sunday ( 6-May-95) 20:06 2 950506 P2 ARS1 STD Terminator-Offpointing: The terminator-offpointing program will continue this week. The SSOC tohbans will be required to manually insert the off-point OGs for the terminators in the OP tables. The Chief Observer can instruct the new tohbans about how to schedule the offpoints. SXT CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 17: 24-Apr-95 to 30-Apr-95 Last week marked perhaps a new record low in the solar activity for this solar cycle. By mid-week the GOES low-energy channel had reached A level and began to drop out all together at certain times. The BCS S XV flux levels became so low that it was not possible to discern a spectrum from a 200s integration. Normally, S XV can be easily seen in short exposures, but the lack of active regions implies a lack of high temperature coronal material. SXT INSTRUMENT STATUS The SXT instrument is in fine working order. CAMPAIGNS TERMINATOR OFFPOINTING CAMPAIGN The use of OG33 and OG87 was investigated by Hara san last week in consultation with Fujiwara san. It has been determined that it is safe to use these terminators. I have asked that the SSOC tohbans fax the OP list to D-out when terminators are scheduled. Please make sure this is done so that the Chief Observer can track the progress of the terminator program. X-RAY BRIGHT POINTS The XBP campaign last week not unsuccessful. The activity from AR 7863/7864 caused us to postpone the start of the campaign. One day of coordinated observations were attempted, but this was not successful. The campaign will be repeated in mid-June. FILAMENT WATCH We conducted a one-day filament watch campaign last week. Given the solar conditions, we well continue to plan filament observations for the remainder of the week. The filament campaign is being coordinated by Kevin Reardon at Hawaii. The Soon sites will also participate. UPCOMING SERTS FLIGHT The SERTS rocket will be launched on 15 May 1995 at about 18:00 UT. Joe Davila leads the effort. They will target the North coronal hole because of the opportunity to observe jointly with Ulysses. See http://serts.nascom.nasa.gov for full details.
