4 June 1995 N. Nitta SXT CHIEF OBSERVER REPORT AND TABLE PLAN SXT TABLE PLAN FOR WEEK 23 (4-JUN-95 to 10-JUN-95) This week, we will continue the filament observing during the visible orbits, in addition to coordinating with the Pic-du-Midi campaign (led by Brigitte Schmieder, 7-16 June) and another XBP camoaign (led by Karen Harvey, 9-16 June). In order to build a better database of terminator images, we will probably ask that some of the offpoint OG's be replaced with new ones. The observing objectives of this plan are: - Dark Calibration on Monday. - Pic-du-Midi campaign (starting Wednesday). - Take offpoint terminator images. - Filament campaign. - XBP campaign (starting Friday). The SXT Table Plan for the week is as follows. Please remember that this is subject to change. The date in the table ID reflects the UT date of the first pass. The SSOC tohbans will be required to manually insert the off-point OGs for the terminators in the OP tables. The SSOC tohbans, please fax the preliminary OP list to D-tou when it contains a terminator so that the Chief Observer can suggest which OG's to be used. SXT CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 22: 28-MAY-95 to 3-JUN-95 Following IAU Colloquium 153, we had several visitors who did not return immediately after the meeting. No BCS representatives were present, however, because of the UV & X-Ray Spectroscopy meeting in Nagoya. SXT INSTRUMENT STATUS The SXT instrument continues to be in fine working order. Because of great efforts of Loren Acton during the past couple of weeks, we can now easily see which offpoints are most needed to fill the gaps of the terminator image databse. A quick look at three terminators that were dumped at KSC last week indicates that two were successful. We would like three new OG's to be implemented that allow terminators to be taken at South and West offpoint positions. Although the GOES level is still very low, there are some bright regions on the Sun such as AR 7873, AR 7874 (new) and those near the east limb. Because of these, the problem of ARS1 picking up dark spikes seems to be less serious than it was a week before. However, we request that KSC tobans should continue to dump a patrol image each time an SXT table is loaded to facilitate the study of optimizing ARS parameters for an awfully quiet period. FILAMENT CAMPAIGN This has been a sort of background job for some time in the absence of other important campaigns. Although we were afraid of a possibility that one of the regions on the east limb might produce flares, we observed a seemingly stationary filament near the SE limb for one full day (after Greg Slater's "Don't worry, no problem" - he was right). In X-rays we did see some structures growing, which were apparently left unnoticed in H-alpha observations. A later report from Hawaii says part of the filament dissolved several hours later. SCIENCE Shibata san and Shimojo san worked closely with Mukul Kundu and Nariaki Nitta on two-sided jets which will be compared with Nancay radio data. Yohkoh Seminar resumed. Hugh Hudson and Greg Slater are preparing for the Solar Wind conference.
