21 August 1995 M. Weber SXT CHIEF OBSERVER REPORT AND TABLE PLAN SXT TABLE PLAN FOR WEEK 34 (21-AUG-95 to 27-AUG-95) The only coordinated campaign planned for this week is to assist Hawaii in looking for filament eruptions. The observing objectives of this plan are: - Standard filament observing table for half of the week. - Dark Calibration on Monday. - Continuation of terminator-offpointing campaign. The SXT Table Plan for the week is as follows: KSC Time (start) in JST Pass Table ID Comments _____________(= UT + 9 hrs)______#_______________________________ Monday 21-Aug-95 17:33 2 950821 P2 ARS1 DARKCAL Tuesday 22-Aug-95 17:52 3 950822 P3 ARS0 FILAMENT Wednesday 23-Aug-95 18:11 3 950823 P3 ARS0 FILAMENT Thursday 24-Aug-95 15:05 2 950824 P2 ARS0 FILAMENT Friday 25-Aug-95 15:24 2 950825 P2 ARS1 STD+LONG Saturday ************ NO TABLE UPLOAD PLANNED ************* Terminator-Offpointing: The terminator-offpointing program will continue this week. The SSOC tohbans are required to manually insert the off-point OGs for the terminators in the OP tables. SSOC TOHBAN, please fax the preliminary OP list to D-tou when it contains a terminator so that the Chief Observer can suggest which OG's to be used. Dumping Patrol images: We request that KSC tohban continue to dump a patrol image each time an SXT table is loaded to facilitate the study of optimizing ARS parameters for an awfully quiet period. /// KSC and SSOC TOHBAN PLEASE NOTE: \\\ \\\ THIS TABLE PLAN IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE. /// The SXT Chief Observer sees two possibilities in particular this week. - The FILAMENT tables and STD+LONG tables may be re-arranged depending upon observing conditions and/or new information from our collaborators in Hawaii. This means that an SXT Table ID may change within a day of the upload. HOWEVER, the SXT Chief Observer shall try to give the tohban EXTRA WARNING if the PASS # is to be changed. - There is a possibility that an SXT Table will be composed to look at the polar faculae, in conjunction with the proposal of Koutchmy-san and Hara-san. The SXT CO will try to give the tohban ADVANCE WARNING if the upload schedule is to be changed. ____________________________________________________________________ ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ SXT CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Weeks 32 and 33: 07-AUG-95 to 20-AUG-95 (This report spans Weeks 32 and 33 since there was no operations meeting for Week 33.) The Sun has continued to remain largely quiescent for the past two weeks. There were no special operations except for some filament observations. We continued to concentrate on obtaining terminators with OG 85 (E08 S17) in all SXT filters, although lack of opportunities and a miscommunication between the SXT CO and the SSOC tohban negated this for the most part. SOLAR ACTIVITY Six active regions have transited the disk over this period. There have been minor surges in activity according to GOES data, but nothing reaching C-level. The general depression in soft X-ray emission has facilitated coordinated observing of filaments with Mees. SXT INSTRUMENT STATUS The SXT has been functioning properly. FILAMENT OBSERVATIONS SXT has been assisting Hawaii with filament observations. There have been a couple of near-successes, but nothing significant to report. On the positive side, filament observations have provided the SXT Chief Observer with several learning experiences on the use of ARS modes. UPCOMING CAMPAIGNS - SPARTAN Spartan 201-03 launch delayed until "late August". Our observing plan will change depending on exact launch date. - POLAR RAY CAMPAIGN The Yohkoh team has accepted a campaign proposal from Koutchmy-san and Hara-san to "Identify and deduce relevant parameters of small scale features seen at high temperature in polar regions at time when polar faculae are still active." The dates of this campaign will be determined by the proposers and the SXT Chief Observer. PERSONNEL - Hugh Hudson and Alphonse Sterling left ISAS in Week 33 to attend a high-energy conference at Goddard. The SXT CO felt lonely for a few days until ... - Greg Slater of Lockheed arrived 16-Aug-95 to handle Software and Systems duties. SEMINARS - There have been no ISAS seminars recently.
