16 September 1995 N. Nitta SXT CHIEF OBSERVER REPORT AND TABLE PLAN SXT CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 37: 11-SEP-95 to 17-SEP-95 During this reporting period, the Sun was very quiet. We had planned to observe filaments, but it turned out that there was no major filament. Instead, we observed the north pole region again with the same setup as before, but there were not as many small jets this time, presumably because the limb was illuminated by the stuff on the other side of the Sun. On Saturday, we have started another X-ray Bright Point (XBP) campaign in coordination with Kitt Peak, Hawaii and Big Bear. In spite of the trouble of an old terminal at KSC (G 150), the SXT operations went smoothly, thanks largely to the competent KSC and SSOC tohbans. SOLAR ACTIVITY There was not even a single instant when the GOES intensity reached the B1 level. No numbered active regions were seen. Instead, many XBPs were present. SXT INSTRUMENT STATUS The SXT had no major problem except that ARS started picking up wrong places due to the lack of bright regions. Thus, after some experiments we changed the setup of patrol images to Al/Mg, DPE=17 (previously Mg, DPE=14). As a result, bright regions are now being selected. We may go back to the previous setup if bright regions start to appear. CAMPAIGNS We ran a sequence to observe the north pole region, a project initiated by S. Kouchmy and H. Hara and later joined by K. Reardon. There were not as many small jets as had been found in the similar images from 2 September. The first run of another XBP campaign took place on Saturday, observing a mixed polarity region centered at N15E38. SEMINARS On 11 and 12 September, an extend Yohkoh operations meeting (but in reality a science meeting) was held, which featured Prof. Hirayama giving four lectures. About 50 people gathered. Hirayama, SXT-J PI, is leaving for Munich on 1 October. On 13 September, Dr. V. Martinez Pillet (HAO) was invited to a Yohkoh seminar to speak on "Photospheric Magnetic Flux Losses as Observed with the Advanced Stokes Polarimeter." SXT TABLE PLAN FOR WEEK 38 (18-SEP-95 to 24-SEP-95) Unless solar activity increases significantly or something unusual happens, we continue the XBP campaign all through this week. This will involve two table uploads a day - first for observing XBPs and second for going back to normal. On Monday the second table will be for weekly dark calibration. The SXT Table Plan for the week is as follows: KSC Time (start) in JST Pass Table ID Comments _____________(= UT + 9 hrs)______#_______________________________ Monday 18-Sep-95 02:33 1 950917 P1 ARS0 XBP CAMP Monday 18-Sep-95 09:23 5 950917 P5 ARS1 DARKCAL Tuesday 19-Sep-95 04:34 2 950918 P2 ARS0 XBP CAMP Tuesday 19-Sep-95 07:59 4 950918 P4 ARS1 STD+LONG+FR Wednesday 20-Sep-95 01:29 1 950919 P1 ARS0 XBP CAMP Wednesday 20-Sep-95 08:19 5 950919 P5 ARS1 STD+LONG Thursday 21-Sep-95 01:47 1 950920 P1 ARS0 XBP CAMP Thursday 21-Sep-95 08:39 5 950920 P5 ARS1 STD+LONG Friday 22-Sep-95 00:25 1 950921 P1 ARS0 XBP CAMP Friday 22-Sep-95 07:15 5 950921 P5 ARS1 STD+LONG Saturday 23-Sep-95 02:25 2 950922 P3 ARS0 XBP CAMP Saturday 23-Sep-95 05:51 4 950922 P4 ARS1 STD+LONG Saturday 23-Sep-95 23:21 1 950923 P1 ARS0 XBP CAMP Sunday 24-Sep-95 04:28 4 950924 P4 ARS1 STD+LONG /// KSC and SSOC TOHBAN PLEASE NOTE: \\\ \\\ THIS TABLE PLAN IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE. /// Terminator-Offpointing: We plan to do offpoint observations regularly. So offpoint terminator images have to be taken as before. We continue to ask SSOC tohbans to manually insert the off-point OGs for the terminators in the OP tables. SSOC TOHBAN, please fax the preliminary OP list to D-tou when it contains a terminator so that the Chief Observer can suggest which OG's to be used. Dumping Patrol images: We request that KSC tohban continue to dump a patrol image each time an SXT table is loaded to facilitate the study of optimizing ARS parameters for an awfully quiet period.
