9 October 1995 J. R. Lemen SXT CHIEF OBSERVER REPORT AND TABLE PLAN SXT CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 39: 2-OCT-95 to 8-Oct-95 Another relatively easy week of SXT operations. Serge Savy is gradually becoming proficient in some SXT Chief Observer tasks. SOLAR ACTIVITY Another week of low solar activity. I don't believe that there was a NOAA numbered active region for the entire week. SXT INSTRUMENT STATUS The SXT was in fine working order. CAMPAIGNS There were no campaigns this week. The maintenance at Mees took a little longer than expected and did not become operational until the weekend. SEMINARS Because of the science meeting in Niigata, there was no Yohkoh seminar this week. SXT TABLE PLAN FOR WEEK 41 (8-Oct-95 to 13-OCT-95) Our plan this week will be to mainly do SXT table uploads to cycle through the terminator images. Please assume that we will do these in the normal pointing position unless otherwise noted. The SXT Table Plan for the week is as follows: KSC Time (start) in JST Pass Table ID Comments _____________(= UT + 9 hrs)______#_______________________________ Monday 9-Oct-95 18:08 2 951009 P2 ARS1 STD+LONG Tuesday 10-Oct-95 18:28 3 951010 P3 ARS1 DKCAL Wednesday 11-Oct-95 17:04 2 951011 P2 ARS1 STD+LONG Thursday 12-Oct-95 17:23 2 951012 P2 ARS1 STD+LONG Friday 13-Oct-95 15:59 2 951013 P2 ARS1 STD+LONG Saturday 14-Oct-95 16:19 2 951014 P2 ARS1 STD+LONG /// KSC and SSOC TOHBAN PLEASE NOTE: \\\ \\\ THIS TABLE PLAN IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE. /// The table load planned for Pass 2 on Wednesday may be delayed until Pass 4 depending on the convenience of the KSC tohbans. There are only two scheduled KSC contacts for that day. Terminator-Offpointing: We plan to do offpoint observations regularly. So offpoint terminator images have to be taken as before. We continue to ask SSOC tohbans to manually insert the off-point OG's for the terminators in the OP tables. SSOC TOHBAN, please fax the preliminary OP list to D-tou when it contains a terminator so that the Chief Observer can suggest which OG's to be used. Dumping Patrol images: We request that KSC tohban continue to dump a patrol image each time an SXT table is loaded to facilitate the study of optimizing ARS parameters for an awfully quiet period. Upcoming Campaigns: The Chromospheric Activity and Coronal Loops campaign will occur on 19-25 October. The organizers are B. Schmieder, P. Mein, L. Roudier, L. Van Driel-Gesztelyi. Solar Eclipse: For the solar eclipse we should plan to disable the flare flag during the time of the eclipse observations. CHANGES TO MO_MOUNT COMMAND FROM LAWRENCE SHING (7-OCT-1995) I have installed the mo_mount code on the isassN machines. I have made some changes to the code. You can find the modified code (ver 1.1) in /0p/mocreate/src I have added the ability to mount CDroms with mo_mount. Another major change that I have done is to use the mocreate user to perform the rsh commands. i.e.: /usr/ucb/rsh node_name -n -l mocreate remote_command The flare machines will have to have the new mo_mount code loaded and compiled in order for it to work. I have installed the new code on flare23. The new code is able to rsh machines with ver 1.0 of Yoshida-sans code. BUT, ver 1.0 cannot rsh machines with newer ver 1.1 Also, ver 1.0 had some bugs which had to be fixed in order for the routines to be used by the /ys routines to generate MOs. Ver 1.1 has been checked out, and the /ys routines work OK. To install ver 1.1 mo_mount code on a machine: su cd /usr/local/bin rm -f mo_mou* mo_umou* mo_exportfs cd /usr/local/src (if src does not exist, mkdir /usr/local/src) mkdir momount cd momount cp /0p/mocreate/src/* . source makeall.csh source momount_delete_links source mo_mount_create_links mkdir /cd mkdir /cd/isass0.0 mkdir /cd/isass1.0 mkdir /cd/isasxa.0 mkdir /cd/isasxb.0 if you want the machine to be able to export it's MO, the machine must have user called mocreate. flare machines already have this account. if you would like to remove old versions of mo_mount code: rm -rf /usr/local/momount (ver 0) rm -rf /usr/local/lib/momount (ver 1.0) DIRECTORY REARRANGEMENTS Before Sam Freeland left last week he made an upgrade the Yohokh software. Some routines in the "atest" directories were moved to the "rel" (released) directories. He also rearranged the directories somewhat so that the Yohkoh and SOHO software trees can be used together. FIRST_LIGHT IMPROVEMENTS Sam Freeland made some improvements to the first_light,/summ routine. The display now includes a combined SXT/MK III coronagraph image. OP_FIRST_GUESS Sawa san pointed out a problem with the choice of the LOS command generated by op_first_guess for the case when on the second KSC day passes 1 and 3 were available, but not pass 2. Modifications have been made and will be put on line this week. PLOT_GOES PROBLEM The Chief Observer has found that the plot_goes routine will not work for recent times. A message has been sent to Sam Freeland. Various changes were made to plot_goes last week and this may be causing the problem.
