16 October 1995 J. R. Lemen S. K. Savy SXT CHIEF OBSERVER REPORT AND TABLE PLAN SXT CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 41: 9-OCT-95 to 15-Oct-95 The highlights this week: the Sun became more active; we practiced SXT table loads for the eclipse; and we obtained a good high-time resolution sequence on AR7912. The last sequence will be useful to try to remove the SXT PSF to obtain high-resolution images. SOLAR ACTIVITY In a sharp contrast from the previous week, we had four active regions on the disk towards the end of the week. AR7912 was the most interesting. Hal Zirin claimed this was a reversed polarity old-cycle region. The Mees magnetograms showed a complex field geometry and this resulted in a series of C flares and one M-class flare that was well-observed by Yohkoh. SXT INSTRUMENT STATUS The SXT was in fine working order. CAMPAIGNS There were no campaigns this week. However, two test tables in preparation for the eclipse were uploaded. The eclipse will be observed with one filter (AlMg) at quarter resolution. At the same time, the PFIs will be done as two half-resolution, 1x4 ORs that will be placed at the north and south poles. This is designed to observe the solar plumes. The cadence will one quarter resolution image every 36s and each pole will be observed with a 72s cadence. Flare mode should be disabled during the eclipse. SEMINARS Seminars this week were by J. Sato (NAO) on "HXR and SXR Images of the 15-Mar-93 Flare" and M. Shimojo (Tokai University) who spoke of recent work on identifying common features of flares and jets. SXT TABLE PLAN FOR WEEK 42 (15-Oct-95 to 21-OCT-95) Our plan this week focuses on the Chromospheric Activity campaign which is being organized by Brigitte Schmieder (Muedon). On Wednesday we will load a table to practice for the solar eclipse observations. Please plan to do off-point terminator observations at the appropriate off-point angles for the eclipse observations. The SXT Table Plan for the week is as follows: KSC Time (start) in JST Pass Table ID Comments _____________(= UT + 9 hrs)______#_______________________________ Monday 16-Oct-95 15:14 2 951016 P2 ARS2 DKCAL Tuesday 17-Oct-95 12:10 1 951017 P1 ARS2 STD+LONG Tuesday 17-Oct-95 15:34 3 951017 P3 ARS2 STD+LONG Wednesday 18-Oct-95 12:28 1 951018 P1 ARS0 ECL TEST Wednesday 18-Oct-95 15:53 3 951018 P3 ARS2 STD+LONG Thursday 19-Oct-95 16:12 3 951019 P3 ARS2 STD+LONG Friday 20-Oct-95 14:49 3 951020 P3 ARS2 STD+LONG Saturday 20-Oct-95 13:25 2 951020 P2 ARS1 STD+LONG /// KSC and SSOC TOHBAN PLEASE NOTE: \\\ \\\ THIS TABLE PLAN IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE. /// The second table load on Tuesday (at Pass 3) might be canceled if the target selected at Pass 1 is suitable. Terminator-Offpointing: We plan to do offpoint observations regularly. So offpoint terminator images have to be taken as before. We continue to ask SSOC tohbans to manually insert the off-point OG's for the terminators in the OP tables. SSOC TOHBAN, please fax the preliminary OP list to D-tou when it contains a terminator so that the Chief Observer can suggest which OG's to be used. Dumping Patrol images: We request that KSC tohban continue to dump a patrol image each time an SXT table is loaded to facilitate the study of optimizing ARS parameters for an awfully quiet period. Campaigns: This week we begin the Chromospheric Activity and Coronal Loops campaign which occurs officially on 19-25 October, but for which we will start observations on 17 October. The organizers are B. Schmieder, P. Mein, L. Roudier, and L. Van Driel-Gesztelyi. The SXT CO will choose the solar target on a daily basis and will send the coordinates to France by e-mail and to Tennerife by Fax (+34 22 32 91 40). SXT will use AlMg and and Al filters and 2x2 OG field of view and ARS2. The relevant hours for the ground-based observations are 06:00 to 16:00 UT.
