11 March 1996 Nariaki Nitta SXT CHIEF OBSERVER REPORT AND TABLE PLAN SXT CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 10: 04-Mar-96 to 10-Mar-96 SOLAR ACTIVITY The solar activity continued to be very low, with no flares reported and only hints of active regions. SXT INSTRUMENT STATUS SXT was operational, but there were several problems with SXTSPT in the upload confirmation function. Hara_san and Fujitsu are looking into this and will participate in real-time operations on Monday, 11-Mar. CAMPAIGNS A joint observing campaign with SoHO (their first!) took place on 7-Mar. It was their JOP_039, study of polar plumes. From the Yohkoh point of view it was a re-play of the Koutchmy-Hara campaign excercise from last year, except this time with most of the SoHO capability available for a much fuller characterization of the plume origins. The SXT setup was tested twice, along with an offpoint 18' S in an unsuccessful attempt to avoid the thin Al pinhole. The final observation appeared to go successfully from the Yohkoh side, with no offpoint and 2x1 OR observations in AlMg, Mg, and occasional Al12 peeks. We are eager to reduce the data along the lines of Kevin Reardon's careful work from the Koutchmy-Hara campaign, and hope this small field of view still allowed us to see a bright point or a jet or two. SEMINARS There were three seminars this week: Mar. 6: H. Koshiishi (Nobeyama SRO) talked about his software improvements for Nobeyama 17 GHz observations, which appear to promise a factor of 10 improvement in background fluctuation level. Mar. 6: N. Gopalswamy presented Nobeyama and Yohkoh data on what appears to have been a complete "3-part" CME event, with mass about 2 x10^14 gm. Mar. 7: G. Haerendel (joint seminar and ISAS colloquium) discussed his ideas for multiple current fibers as the origin of flare energy. This picture is strikingly different from the CSHKP model that has played such an important role in the interpretation of Yohkoh flare observations. SXT TABLE PLAN FOR WEEK 11 (11-Mar-96 to 17-Mar-96) No official campaign is scheduled for this week, and we are having trouble with operating software (SXTSPT). Thus there will probably be minimal table activity. At present the plan only includes the routine dark cal and diffuser tables. Do finger campaign@isass0 to see the current plans for future campaigns. On Tuesday we plan to do the weekly dark calibration, and on Wednesday the diffuser table. Otherwise we will continue with ARS1. The provisional SXT Table Plan for the week is as follows: KSC Time (start) in JST Pass Table ID _____________(= UT + 9 hrs)______#_______________________________ Tuesday 12-Mar-96 18:49 3 960312 P3 ARS1 DKCAL Wednesday 13-Mar-96 15:42 2 960313 P2 ARS1 STD+DIFF Thursday 14-Mar-96 16:01 2 960314 P2 ARS1 STD+LONG *** Please note that this table plan may change *** Dumping Patrol images: We request that KSC tohban continue to dump a patrol image each time an SXT table is loaded to facilitate the study of optimizing ARS parameters for an awfully quiet period. SSOC TOHBAN, please fax the preliminary OP list to D-tou when it contains a terminator so that the Chief Observer can suggest which OG's to use.
