SXT CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 27:   01-JUL-96 to 07-JUL-96


The easiest way to eat crow is while it's still warm.  The colder it gets,

SOLAR ACTIVITY

Solar activity was low, although there were several small active
regions on the disc. A large swathe of diffuse corona extending across the
disc appeared during the week, and has persisted for several days.

SXT INSTRUMENT STATUS 

No significant SXT errors errors. SXT continues to function well.

CAMPAIGNS

No campaigns in week 27.

SEMINARS

On Thursday, July 4, there were several speakers during the regular seminar
period:
S. Savy (ARC/ISAS) "Soft X-ray preflare brightening"
A. Sterling (CPI/ISAS) "BCS results from Madison"
B. Somov (MSU/NAO) "On the thermal instability of shrinking loops"


NEW REFORMAT DISC

The reformat data area is now located on /yd3/reformat on isass0, following
the problems with the isass2 disc last week. This is the new /yd3
automount point:

                       SXT TABLE PLAN FOR WEEK 28
                         (8-Jul-96 to 13-Jul-96)

This week we are doing coordinated oberservations of the corona over the
east limb with SoHO on 8 July, using a special long exposure full
resolution FFI table.  This table will run overnight on 8 July. 

A dark calibration table will be loaded on Tuesday, and the weekly
diffusers included as part of a standard table on Wednesday.

Dumping Patrol images:

   We request that KSC tohbans continue to dump a patrol image each time an
SXT table is loaded to facilitate the study of optimizing ARS parameters
for an awfully, awfully quiet period. 

  SSOC TOHBAN, please fax the preliminary OP list to D-tou when it contains
a terminator so that the Chief Observer can suggest which OG's to use.
