15 July 1996 David Alexander SXT CHIEF OBSERVER REPORT AND TABLE PLAN SXT CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 28: 08-JUL-96 to 14-JUL-96 Coolness and a steady nerve will always beat simple quickness. Take yer time and you'll only need to pull the trigger once. from `A Cowboy's Guide To Life' SOLAR ACTIVITY Solar activity took a turn for the better this week. An X-flare, 2 M- flares and 15 C flares were detected by GOES from AR 7978. Unfortunately, the peak of the X-flare was during Yohkoh night. AR 7978 is heading for the west limb and a small region in the eastern hemisphere is showing signs of liveliness. The GOES output is currently fairly constant around B-level. SXT INSTRUMENT STATUS No SXT errors. SXT continues to function well. CAMPAIGNS We participated in a campaign as part of SoHO JOP027 to study the diffuse corona. Long exposures (60s) full resolution FFIs were taken together with an E5' offpoint. Coordination with the VLA campaign, planned for July 13, was cancelled due to the activity of AR 7978. We may have another chance at this on July 27. We are awaiting confirmation. SEMINARS There were no seminars this week. SXT TABLE PLAN FOR WEEK 29 (15-Jul-96 to 20-Jul-96) This week we are doing coordinated observations of transient brightenings as support for SOHO JOP045. This will involve CDS, SUMER, and EIT, as well as Mees, Kitt Peak and other ground-based observatories. A dark calibration table will be loaded on Tuesday, and the weekly diffusers included as part of a standard table on Wednesday. SSOC TOHBAN, please fax the preliminary OP list to D-tou when it contains a terminator so that the Chief Observer can suggest which OG's to use.
