SXT CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 32:   5-AUG-96 to 11-AUG-96


SOLAR ACTIVITY

AR7981, now disappearing over the limb, remained bright last week but
produced only one C-class flare on 6 August that was observed by Yohkoh. 
Long, relatively high-altitude loops were observed throughout its passage
across the disc. 

SXT INSTRUMENT STATUS

SXT continues to function well. No significant errors last week.


CAMPAIGNS

Coordinated obervations of AR7981 with CDS and Sumer were carried out 8-10
August, for Louise Harra (MSSL).  A standard table was used to track
AR7981, with the addition of an Al.12 exposure in the PFI table for better
temperature analysis. 

SEMINARS

On Thursday 8 August there was a regular Yohkoh seminar. The speaker was J.Wang
(ISAS/Beijing Astronomical Observatory), on "Shrinkage of X-Ray Loops in
AR7420".








                       SXT TABLE PLAN FOR WEEK 33
                        (2-Aug-96 to 17-Aug-96)

The coronal structure campaign (JOP044 with SoHO) for Sarah Gibson starts
today, 12 August, until 12 September.  We are aiming for 3 special
observations per week according to the following prescription:

one orbit at S/C 5' W     Only long exposures (FFIs): Al.1 at 10 sec, AlMg at 30 sec
one orbit at S/C 5' E     Only long exposures (FFIs): Al.1 at 10 sec, AlMg at 30 sec

SSOC Tohbans: The SXT CO will schedule the offpoints for this campaign.
The current plan for this week is:

Monday  12-AUG-96 :  s/c offpoint WEST 5' for orbit between P2-3 
        12-AUG-96 :   "           EAST 5' for orbit between P3-4

Tuesday 13-AUG-96 :   "           EAST 5' for orbit between P3-4

Friday: 16-AUG-96 :   "           EAST 5' for orbit between P2-3
        16-AUG-96 :   "           WEST 5' for orbit between P3-4
       

A dark calibration table will be loaded on Monday, and the weekly
diffusers included as part of a standard table on Tuesday.

Continuing requests:

We request that KSC tohbans continue to dump a patrol image each time an
SXT table is loaded to facilitate the study of optimizing ARS parameters
for an awfully, awfully quiet period.

SSOC TOHBAN, please fax the preliminary OP list to D-tou when it contains
a terminator so that the Chief Observer can suggest which OG's to use.
