SXT CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 38:  16-Sep-96 to 22-Sep-96



SOLAR ACTIVITY

Solar activity remained low, around A-class level.  There were no active
regions visible on the disc, but the previous AR 7986 (=7981=7978) became
visible behind the E limb.


SXT INSTRUMENT STATUS

No significant problems. SXT continues to function well.


CAMPAIGNS

On September 17, we supported the VLA filament observations coordinated by
Gopalswamy, and on September 19 and 20 we supported the SOHO - Mauna Loa
bright point campaign coordinated by Don Hassler.

A filament, chromospheric activity, and coronal loops campaign with Tenerife
and SOHO starts on September 21, and is coordinated by Brigitte Schmieder.

The main campaign activity scheduled for this week is the filament,
chromospheric activity, and coronal loops campaign with Tenerife and
SOHO, which lasts throughout the week.  Observations are coordinated
by Brigitte Schmieder and Lidia van Driel-Gesztelyi.

Depending on activity, we may have coordinated observations with
SOHO - CDS and EIT for active region loop temperatures, organized by
Joan Schmelz, Jean-Pierre Wuelser, and Andrzej Fludra.
       
A dark calibration table will be loaded on Tuesday, and the weekly
diffusers included as part of a standard table on Wednesday.

Continuing requests:

We request that KSC tohbans continue to dump a patrol image each time an
SXT table is loaded to facilitate the study of optimizing ARS parameters
for an awfully, awfully quiet period.

SSOC TOHBAN, please fax the preliminary OP list to D-tou when it contains
a terminator so that the Chief Observer can suggest which OG's to use.
