17 November 1996 N Nitta SXT CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT AND TABLE PLAN CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 46 11-Nov-96 to 17-Nov-96 SOLAR ACTIVITY Solar activity continued to be generally low during the week with only a few B-class flares. Small active regions were seen (AR 7993: short-lived, AR 7994: the target region of SERTS, AR 7995: located close both to the equator and the remnant of the many roatation-old region, and AR 7996: a new cycle region at the relatively high latitude (N35)). None of them has shown high activity so far. Except for the 13th, when we observed AR 7994 in coordination with SERTS, our field of view was on the east limb to await the occurrence of a spectacular CME, which we have not yet seen. SXT INSTRUMENT STATUS SXT operations went smoothly without problems. CAMPAIGNS SoHO JOP 3 to observe CME initiation. SERTS (launched 13-NOV-96 18:30 UT during Yohioh night). SEMINARS On Thursday 14 November, the Yohkoh seminar resumed. The speakers and titles were: D. Gary: "Microwave spectral imaging using Spatial/Spectral MEM" and A. Phillips: "1/6 of my thesis." Dale is vising Nobeyama for a month stay. He was stuck in this area until next morning because he missed the train. Andy has just finished PhD at UCL and the talk was on superhot flares as observed by BCS Fe XXVI channel, which was last 1/6 of his thesis. SXT TABLE PLAN FOR WEEK 47 (18-Nov-96 to 24-Nov-96) We carry on the SoHO campaign JOP 3 this week and the target is selected on a daily basis. A dark calibration table will be loaded on Tuesday, and the weekly diffusers included as part of a standard table on Thursday. All terminator opportunities will be used but no terminator offpoints will be required. Please note that the KSC pass ID and the SXT Table ID sometimes show different dates because of the JST/UT problem at this time. KSC Time (start) in JST Pass Table ID _____________(= UT + 9 hrs)______#_______________________________ Monday 18-NOV-96 17:25 2 961118 P2 ARS0 STD+LONG Tuesday 19-NOV-96 19:27 4 961119 P4 ARS0 DKCAL Wednesday 20-NOV-96 18:03 3 961120 P3 ARS0 STD+LONG Thursday 21-NOV-96 14:55 2 961121 P2 ARS0 LONG+DIFF Friday 22-NOV-96 15:14 2 961122 P2 ARS0 STD+LONG Saturday 23-NOV-96 19:00 4 961123 P4 ARS1 STD+LONG *** Please note that this table plan may change *** Continuing requests: We request that KSC tohbans continue to dump a patrol image each time an SXT table is loaded to facilitate the study of optimizing ARS parameters during quiet times. SSOC TOHBAN, please e-mail any terminator schedule to the chief observer (sxt_co@isass0) so that he can decide about filters and offpoints.
