3 February 1997 Nariaki Nitta SXT CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT AND TABLE PLAN CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 05 27-Jan-97 to 2-Feb-97 SOLAR ACTIVITY The Sun was quiet during most of the week, with only a few B-class flares. Those on 29 January seem to come from AR 8015, which apparently became stable later. We note a sudden increase in activity on 2 February. In the lack of SXT information (because of the operations holiday), we only guess AR 8016 to be the region that is producing B- and C-class flares. We heard from Hawaii (Mees and Mauna Loa) about prominence activities on the southeast limb on 30/31 January, but on SXT images we saw only a "whorl" that did not seem to undergo drastic changes. The latest H-alpha images show a filament is still located in the southeastern part of the Sun. SXT INSTRUMENT STATUS The SXT instrument has continued to be in fine working order. OPERATIONAL PROBLEMS As a result of my operational error with the table generating program SXTSPT (30-JAN-97), Hara san asked Fujitsu to change some of its features. Within a day a new version was put on line. But it had a bug, which prevented a new table from being transmitted to KSC. So the table to observe the southeast limb had to be cancelled. Fortunately, Kojima san came to ISAS late on 1-FEB-97 to fix the problem, several hours before the upload of the weekend table. CAMPAIGNS No major campaigns except that we observed the south polar region for jets in coordination with SoHO/CDS (31-JAN-97). SEMINARS There were no Yohkoh seminars in Week 5. SXT TABLE PLAN FOR WEEK 06 (03-Feb-97 to 09-Feb-97) We presently know nothing about campaigns for this week, so we would like to keep three tables unspecified. The following plan reflects the possibility that late passes of the day may be affected by MUSES-B test operations. The routine tables are the dark calibration table on Wednesday and the diffuser table (as part of a standard table) on Friday. SSOC TOHBAN, please e-mail any terminator schedule to the chief observer (sxt_co@isass0) so that he can decide about filters and offpoints. On next week's visible diagram, please mark the official 5 passes first and then cross those passes that will be given to other satellites.
