19 January 1998 Hugh Hudson SXT CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT AND TABLE PLAN CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 3 12-Jan-98 to 19-Jan-98 SOLAR ACTIVITY Solar activity returned from its low point. AR8131 grew up on the disk and made many C-class flares as well as one M event. SXT INSTRUMENT STATUS SXT continues to function well. SXT SCIENCE There are no special items to report this week. The "science nugget" will deal with the interesting growth phase of AR8131, which seemed not to make many flares initially but then to make lots of small ones. PERSONNEL L. Acton arrived last week, forgot to mention it then! Visitor M. Sersen arrived from Bratislava for a two-week stay. SEMINARS There were no seminars this week. A new series of ISAS/Yohkoh seminars will begin on Jan. 22. ^L SXT TABLE PLAN FOR WEEK 4 (19-jan-98 - 26-jan-98) SXT Chief Observer: Hudson There will be VLA solar observations this week, which SXT (plus SOHO and others) will support. N. Gopalswamy will be the contact point, and we will try to match the selected pointing as best we can. The contact pass schedule is fairly good time-wise this time, but we are hampered a bit by loss of passes to the maintenance effort at KSC. ________________________________#_______________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Friday 15-JAN-98 23:53 2 980115 P2 ARS1 STD Saturday 17-JAN-98 00:12 3 980116 P3 ARS1 STD Monday 19-JAN-98 00:48 4 980118 P4 ARS1 DARKCAL Tuesday 19-JAN-98 21:40 2 980119 P2 ARS1 VLA+DIF Wednesday 20-JAN-98 20:15 2 980120 P2 ARS1 VLA Thursday 21-JAN-98 20:33 2 980121 P2 ARS1 VLA Friday 22-JAN-98 19:09 1 980122 P1 ARS1 VLA Saturday 23-JAN-98 19:27 2 980123 P2 ARS1 VLA Sunday 24-JAN-98 23:11 2 980124 P2 ARS1 STD Note that this plan is subject to change. Note also that the table names don't match very well because we are rotating past 00 h UT - our convention is to name the table based on the UT of pass 1 on that day. Continuing requests: SSOC Tohban: On the weekly visible diagram, please mark the official five passes first and then cross out those passes that will be given to other satellites. That way we can keep the numbering straight in the Yohkoh software system. SSOC Tohban: SXT operations do not currently include terminator off- pointing. It is unnecessary this week to ask the SXT Chief Observer for terminator off-pointing information. KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to a typhoon) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately.
