09 May 1998 David McKenzie SXT CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT AND TABLE PLAN CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 19 03-May-98 to 10-May-98 SOLAR ACTIVITY Solar activity was moderate-to-high, with two X flares and at least eight M flares. Most of these flares were known to be associated with CMEs; a few proton events were recorded. SXT INSTRUMENT STATUS SXT has been working fine, though we experienced some problems with the network connection between KSC and SSOC. The Chief Observers feel that an update of the normal pointing is in order. We request an OP+OG for Tuesday, plus an ROG #32 (decimal). SXT SCIENCE For Web material see Current Week: http://www.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/SXTweekly.html Index: http://www.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html This week's webpage displays ejecta and loop-filling from the M flare of 03-may-98. CAMPAIGNS This week SXT took part in two Joint Observing Programs (JOPs). We made images to support JOP 082 ("Magnetic Flux Disappearance in Cancelling Bipoles", Karen Harvey coordinating) and JOP 059 ("High Cadence Activity Studies and the Heating of Coronal Loops", Robert Walsh coordinating). PERSONNEL No personnel changes this week. SEMINARS No seminar this week. SXT TABLE PLAN FOR WEEK 98_20 (11-May-98 - 17-May-98) SXT Chief Observer: McKenzie There are two Joint Observing Programs (JOPs) running this week. Both are interested in temporal changes in the corona, and hope to use high-cadence observations. Note that this plan is subject to change, some tables in the plan may be replaced by special JOP tables. The Chief Observer will try to keep everyone informed of changes/updates. ________________________________#_______________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Monday night 11-May-98 14:49 1 980511 P1 ARS1 STD Wednesday 12-May-98 16:49 3 980512 P3 ARS2 DARK+J59 Thursday 13-May-98 17:07 3 980513 P3 ARS0 JOP 080 Thursday 13-May-98 18:50 4 980513 P4 ARS1 STD Friday 14-May-98 15:42 3 980514 P3 ARS1 STD+DIFF Friday night 15-May-98 12:34 1 980515 P1 ARS2 STD+J59 Saturday night 16-May-98 12:52 2 980516 P2 ARS1 STD Continuing requests: SSOC Tohban: On the weekly visible diagram, please mark the official five passes first and then cross out those passes that will be given to other satellites. That way we can keep the numbering straight in the Yohkoh software system. SSOC Tohban: SXT operations do not currently include terminator off- pointing. It is unnecessary this week to ask the SXT Chief Observer for terminator off-pointing information. KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to a typhoon) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, ie if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
