25 May 1998 David McKenzie Hugh Hudson SXT CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT AND TABLE PLAN CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 21 18-May-98 to 24-May-98 SOLAR ACTIVITY Solar activity was low, with only a few C flares. By the end of the week, the GOES background was near the B level. SXT INSTRUMENT STATUS SXT has been working fine. No problems to report. SXT SCIENCE For Web material see Current Week: ftp://isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp/pub/sxt_co/SXTweekly.html Index: ftp://isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp/pub/sxt_co/index.html In this week's webpage we describe a filament and the surrounding channel, as viewed in five different wavelength ranges. CAMPAIGNS This week we made observations to support JOP 075, and also to support CDS and TRACE measurements of a prominence on the northwest limb. On two evenings we looked for jets with special PFI tables, but with very little success. PERSONNEL Hugh Hudson departed this week, for a trip to include the joint AGU/SPD meeting in Boston. SEMINARS There was no seminar this week. SXT TABLE PLAN FOR WEEK 98_22 (25-May-98 - 31-May-98) SXT Chief Observer: McKenzie We will try to look for jets again, if the solar activity level remains low. There is one observing campaign planned for this week, but the exact day and target are not yet determined. This campaign is organized by K. Muglach to observe active regions. We will also try to follow TRACE and SOHO observing plans, if possible. ________________________________#_______________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Monday 25-MAY-98 07:01 1 980515 P1 ARS0 JET Monday 25-MAY-98 12:07 4 980515 P2 ARS1 STD Tuesday 26-MAY-98 07:17 1 980516 P1 ARS1 DARKCAL Wednesday 27-May-98 07:35 1 980527 P1 ARS1 STD+DIFF Wednesday 27-May-98 12:43 4 980527 P4 ARS1 STD Thursday 28-May-98 07:52 2 980528 P2 ARS1 STD Friday 29-May-98 08:10 2 980529 P2 ARS1 STD Saturday 30-MAY-98 06:45 2 980530 P2 ARS1 STD NOTE: This plan may be changed. The JET table was not included in the preliminary plan sent out on Friday; the Muglach AR campaign may start as soon as Monday night. Continuing requests: SSOC Tohban: On the weekly visible diagram, please mark the official five passes first and then cross out those passes that will be given to other satellites. That way we can keep the numbering straight in the Yohkoh software system. SSOC Tohban: SXT operations do not currently include terminator off- pointing. It is unnecessary this week to ask the SXT Chief Observer for terminator off-pointing information. KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to a typhoon) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, ie if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
