                 CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 24 
                        1-June-98 to 8-June-98 

SOLAR ACTIVITY

The Sun was quiet, with only a few C-level events. 

SXT INSTRUMENT STATUS

SXT has been working fine, no problems to report.  We ran two NORMAL
POINT updates (4-June and 6-June).  There was a false flare trigger on
June 2, 13:42 UT.

SXT SCIENCE 

We have been working all week in support of Karin Muglach's SOHO
observations, which coincided until Friday with the TRACE "staring"
observations on AR 8227. This database should be extremely nice for
AR structure and other purposes. We observed a loop-filling flare 
that seemed to have a "bounce" to it - see

SEMINARS

June 4:

H. Hudson (SPRC/ISAS): "A photospheric flare wave"
S. Watari (CRL): "The distinction between metric and interplanetary Type II's"

Both of these were reports of nice results presented at the SPD/AGU meeting
in Boston. Both dealt with flare waves, one type going up and one type going
down! The latter was widely shown in the media.
