                 CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 24 
                        9-June-98 to 15-June-98 

SOLAR ACTIVITY

The Sun was moderately active, with two M-level events and a plethora
of C-level events, including two LDE's. The M event of June 13 was
extraordinarily impulsive, judging from the GOES light curve, but
we haven't seen Yohkoh data yet.

SXT INSTRUMENT STATUS

SXT has been working fine, no problems to report. Pointing is
exellent, and we noted (today, June 12) some Al.1 SFD's that 
looked perfectly corrected. This makes one think that the
tight SFC pattern we're developing now (terminator images dense 
in space and time) is making things better.

There was again a false flare trigger, on June 8 ~12 UT. No investigation
has been done, but this probably represents the variable low-latitude
electrons in the Van Allen belts. Perhaps the belts are restive during
solar active conditions!

SXT SCIENCE 

The thrill this week (reflected, we hope, in the weekly nugget) has
been the remarkably clean sigmoid active region, AR8232, and its
eruption into a halo CME on June 8.  For the science nuggets URL's

                   SXT TABLE PLAN FOR WEEK 98_25

The table plan shows support for KPNO through the 17th (SOHO JOP 082).
We will also try to follow TRACE or CDS pointings insofar as we're
able.
