19 July 1998 Hugh Hudson SXT CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT AND TABLE PLAN CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 28 14-Jul-98 to 20-Jul-98 SOLAR ACTIVITY Activity was moderate, with 20 C flares and an M flare, but the most recent Pat McIntosh forecast sounds quite gloomy. Activity at the end of the week was low. SXT INSTRUMENT STATUS SXT has been working fine, no new problems to report. We are just about finished with one of the periodic Yohkoh pointing swings, and we may be suffering from some database problems causing improperly corrected SFD ("movie") images. We're working on figuring this out and will re-do the SFD generation when we do. The "FIRST LIGHT" screens now are including TRACE mosaics. SXT SCIENCE For Web material see Current Week: ftp://isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp/pub/sxt_co/SXTweekly.html Index: ftp://isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp/pub/sxt_co/index.html Last week's science nugget is a retrospective, based upon Karen Harvey's analysis of global coronal restructuring during the 1996 "last best region" complex. The Sam Freeland "triple jet" movie (the nugget from the week before) was picked up by APOD. CAMPAIGNS SXT pointing followed TRACE active-region studies and continues to do so. The Hida campaign resumes next week, followed by "whole Sun month-II". PERSONNEL No changes. SXT TABLE PLAN FOR WEEK 98_29 (20-Jul-98 - 27-Jul-98) SXT Chief Observer: Hudson There are no formal observing campaigns planned for this week, but we will coordinate with TRACE plans whenever possible. ________________________________#_______________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Monday 20-JUL-98 04:55 1 980720 P1 ARS2 TRACE/D Monday 20-JUL-98 10:04 4 980720 P4 ARS2 DARKCAL Wednesday 22-JUL-98 03:48 1 980722 P1 ARS2 TRACE Wednesday 22-JUL-98 08:56 4 980722 P4 ARS2 TRACE Thursday 23-JUL-98 02:24 1 980723 P1 ARS2 TRACE Thursday 23-JUL-98 07:30 4 980723 P4 ARS2 TRACE Friday 24-JUL-98 02:40 1 980724 P1 ARS2 TRACE Friday 24-JUL-98 07:48 4 980724 P4 ARS2 TRACE Saturday 25-JUL-98 02:57 1 980725 P1 ARS2 TRACE Saturday 25-JUL-98 08:06 4 980725 P4 ARS2 TRACE Note that this plan may change during the week. Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to a typhoon) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). SSOC Tohban: On the weekly visible diagram, please mark the official five passes first and then cross out those passes that will be given to other satellites. That way we can keep the numbering straight in the Yohkoh software system. SSOC Tohban: SXT operations do not currently include terminator off- pointing. It is unnecessary this week to ask the SXT Chief Observer for terminator off-pointing information. KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, ie if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this. Note that this plan may change during the week.
