25 July 1998 Hugh Hudson SXT CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT AND TABLE PLAN CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 29 20-Jul-98 to 26-Jul-98 SOLAR ACTIVITY Activity was light (7 C flares to 24-Jul) but picking up at the end of the week. SXT INSTRUMENT STATUS The extended co-observing with TRACE, on a faint decaying AR, resulted in some overexposure in the new hot region at the SW. We accordingly dropped this coordination on 22--Jul, but not before observing many nice things. In particular there were well-defined (but for SXT, faint) jets that TRACE must have observed well. SXT SCIENCE For Web material see Current Week: ftp://isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp/pub/sxt_co/SXTweekly.html Index: ftp://isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp/pub/sxt_co/index.html Last week's science nugget deals with the CME event of Oct. 5, 1996 (the subject of one paper by Watari et al., and another in progress by Webb incorporating the result shown in the nugget). Basically we have found an event in which the large angular extent of a major CME is reflected in the low corona. Quite interesting. CAMPAIGNS Our joint observations last week were in support of TRACE and of JOP 083 (Jack Ireland from St. Andrews). The Hida campaign resumes this week, accompanied by "whole Sun month-II". PERSONNEL No changes. SXT TABLE PLAN FOR WEEK 98_30 (27-Jul-98 - 2-Aug-98) SXT Chief Observer: Nitta/Alexander A Hida Observatory emerging-flux campaign begins 29-July and the Whole Sun Month II campaign begins 1-Aug. These make use of PFIs and FFIs, respectively, so we can do them both at once. ________________________________#_______________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Saturday 25-JUL-98 02:57 1 980725 P1 ARS1 STANDARD Monday 27-JUL-98 06:58 4 980727 P4 ARS1 STD DIF Tuesday 28-JUL-98 05:32 4 980728 P4 ARS1 DARKCAL Wednesday 29-JUL-98 00:42 1 980729 P1 ARS2 HIDA Wednesday 29-JUL-98 05:50 4 980729 P4 ARS1 STANDARD Thursday 30-JUL-98 00:59 1 980730 P1 ARS2 HIDA Thursday 30-JUL-98 04:24 3 980730 P3 ARS1 WSMII Friday 31-JUL-98 23:35 1 980730 P1 ARS2 HIDA2 Friday 31-JUL-98 04:42 4 980730 P4 ARS1 WSMII Note that this plan may change during the week. Orbit precession means that we have table naming confusion again - the convention is, the UT date of pass #1 determines the SXT table ID. Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to a typhoon) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). SSOC Tohban: On the weekly visible diagram, please mark the official five passes first and then cross out those passes that will be given to other satellites. That way we can keep the numbering straight in the Yohkoh software system. SSOC Tohban: SXT operations do not currently include terminator off- pointing. It is unnecessary this week to ask the SXT Chief Observer for terminator off-pointing information. KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, ie if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
