2 August 1998 Nariaki Nitta SXT CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT AND TABLE PLAN CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 31 27-Jul-98 to 2-Aug-98 SOLAR ACTIVITY Active region belts were seen in both the northern and southern hemispheres, at similar latitudes, but none of the regions produced major flares. There were only three flares above the GOES C1 level. Several loop brightenings were seen in AR 8282, which was the target region of the Hida campaign. SXT INSTRUMENT STATUS The SXT instrument was in fine working order. SXT SCIENCE For Web material see Current Week: ftp://isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp/pub/sxt_co/SXTweekly.html Index: ftp://isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp/pub/sxt_co/index.html The science nugget of week 98_31 shows an overlay of SXT and TRACE images of AR 8282, taken on 30-Jul-98. CAMPAIGNS We coordinated with TRACE and Hida Observatory to observe signatures of emerging flux. The weather at Hida was not cooperative. This coordination continues through 8-Aug-98. PERSONNEL N. Nitta arrived to fill a short gap of SXT CO coverage and to support the Hida campaign. SXT TABLE PLAN FOR WEEK 98_32 (3-Aug-98 - 9-Aug-98) SXT Chief Observer: Nitta The second Hida campaign continues. The baseline is to upload a PFI dominant/ARS2 table at the earliest pass and to go back to normal operations at the second last pass. ________________________________#_______________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Sunday 2-Aug-98 00:09 1 980802 P1 ARS2 HIDA (cancelled) Tuesday 3-Aug-98 23:02 1 980803 P1 ARS2 HIDA Tuesday 4-Aug-98 02:27 3 980803 P3 ARS1 DARKCAL Wednesday 4-Aug-98 23:19 1 980804 P1 ARS2 HIDA Wednesday 5-Aug-98 02:45 3 980804 P3 ARS1 STD DIF Thursday 5-Aug-98 21:55 1 980805 P1 ARS2 HIDA Thursday 6-Aug-98 03:02 4 980805 P4 ARS1 STD Friday 6-Aug-98 22:12 1 980806 P1 ARS2 HIDA Friday 7-Aug-98 01:37 3 980806 P3 ARS1 STD Saturday 7-Aug-98 22:29 1 980807 P1 ARS2 HIDA Saturday 8-Aug-98 01:55 3 980807 P3 ARS1 STD Note that this plan may change during the week. Orbit precession means that we have table naming confusion again - the convention is, the UT date of pass #1 determines the SXT table ID. Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to a typhoon) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). SSOC Tohban: On the weekly visible diagram, please mark the official five passes first and then cross out those passes that will be given to other satellites. That way we can keep the numbering straight in the Yohkoh software system. SSOC Tohban: SXT operations do not currently include terminator off- pointing. It is unnecessary this week to ask the SXT Chief Observer for terminator off-pointing information. KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, ie if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
