8 August 1998 Nariaki Nitta SXT CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT AND TABLE PLAN CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 32 3-Aug-98 to 9-Aug-98 SOLAR ACTIVITY The level of solar activity continued to be low, despite the presence of several active regions. The target of the Hida campaign was AR 8294/95 in the first half of the week. Although it was not a bright region, it showed several signatures of minor flux emergence, according to the reports from Hida. The second target, AR 8293, was more active and brighter. SXT images showed recurrence of small loop brightenings and jets, which was probably attributable to emerging flux. SXT INSTRUMENT STATUS SXT has been working fine, no new problems to report, except that stray light correction was not always done properly due to a poor sunset image. The movie images were regenerated with proper corrections. SXT SCIENCE For Web material see Current Week: ftp://isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp/pub/sxt_co/SXTweekly.html Index: ftp://isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp/pub/sxt_co/index.html The science nugget of week 98_32 gives nearly simultaneous SXT and TRACE images of a jet that were taken during the Hida campaign. CAMPAIGNS We coordinated with TRACE and Hida Observatory to observe signatures of emerging flux. The weather at Hida was not cooperative. This coordination continues through 8-Aug-98. PERSONNEL David Alexander arrived for a four-week stay. Hugh Hudson returned from Boulder for a couple of days before making another trip. Nariaki Nitta left. SXT TABLE PLAN FOR WEEK 98_33 (10-Aug-98 - 16-Aug-98) SXT Chief Observer: Alexander The Whole Sun Fortnight campaign begins this week on 12-Aug-98. This campaign is a curtailed version of the Second Whole Sun Month campaign because of the problems with SoHO. Specific targets will be selected to carry out a number of objectives. ________________________________#_______________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Tuesday 10-Aug-98 21:38 3 980810 P3 ARS1 DARKCAL Wednesday 11-Aug-98 23:38 4 980811 P4 ARS1 STD DIF Thursday 12-Aug-98 18:48 1 980812 P1 ARS2 WSF Thursday 12-Aug-98 23:56 4 980812 P4 ARS1 STD Friday 13-Aug-98 17:23 1 980813 P1 ARS2 WSF Friday 13-Aug-98 20:48 3 980813 P3 ARS1 STD Saturday 14-Aug-98 17:40 1 980814 P1 ARS2 WSF Saturday 14-Aug-98 22:48 4 980814 P4 ARS1 STD Sunday 15-Aug-98 16:16 1 980815 P1 ARS2 WSF Sunday 15-Aug-98 19:40 3 980814 P3 ARS1 STD Note that this plan may change during the week. Orbit precession means that we have table naming confusion again - the convention is, the UT date of pass #1 determines the SXT table ID. Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to a typhoon) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). SSOC Tohban: On the weekly visible diagram, please mark the official five passes first and then cross out those passes that will be given to other satellites. That way we can keep the numbering straight in the Yohkoh software system. SSOC Tohban: SXT operations do not currently include terminator off- pointing. It is unnecessary this week to ask the SXT Chief Observer for terminator off-pointing information. KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, ie if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
