16 August 1998 David Alexander SXT CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT AND TABLE PLAN CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 33 10-Aug-98 to 16-Aug-98 SOLAR ACTIVITY The level of solar activity continued to be low, despite the presence of several active regions. The target of the Whole Sun Fortnight (WSF) campaign was AR 8299/8297 on Wednesday/Thursday and switched to a large filament in the southern hemisphere on Friday/Saturday. The active region observations showed some interesting inter-region loop activity as well as some nice loop brightenings. SXT could not see anything in the region of the filament channel. SXT INSTRUMENT STATUS SXT has been working fine, no new problems to report. There have been some small difficulties adjusting to the new operations server ISASS5 with a few small bugs remaining to be corrcted. Slater-san and Shirts-san worked hard and long to give us a funtioning system and everything seems to be behaving well. SXT SCIENCE For Web material see Current Week: ftp://isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp/pub/sxt_co/SXTweekly.html Index: ftp://isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp/pub/sxt_co/index.html The science nugget of week 98_33 gives nearly simultaneous SXT and TRACE images of a loop brightening with associated bright knot that were taken during the WSF campaign. CAMPAIGNS We took part in the active region and magnetic field study of the Whole Sun Fortnight coordinating with many ground-based observatories and TRACE. This coordination continues through 25-Aug-98. PERSONNEL Greg Slater and Phil Shirts returned to California. SXT TABLE PLAN FOR WEEK 98_34 (17-Aug-98 - 23-Aug-98) SXT Chief Observer: Alexander The Whole Sun Fortnight campaign continues this week. This campaign is a curtailed version of the Second Whole Sun Month campaign because of the problems with SoHO. Specific targets will be selected to carry out a number of objectives. ________________________________#_______________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Wednesday 18-Aug-98 15:25 1 980818 P1 ARS0 WSF Wednesday 18-Aug-98 18:50 3 980818 P3 ARS1 DARKCAL Thursday 19-Aug-98 14:01 1 980819 P1 ARS0 WSF Thursday 19-Aug-98 19:08 4 980819 P4 ARS1 STD DIF Friday 20-Aug-98 14:17 1 980820 P1 ARS0 WSF Friday 20-Aug-98 17:43 3 980820 P3 ARS1 STD Saturday 21-Aug-98 12:53 1 980821 P1 ARS0 WSF Saturday 21-Aug-98 16:17 3 980821 P3 ARS1 STD Sunday 22-Aug-98 13:09 1 980822 P1 ARS0 WSF Sunday 22-Aug-98 16:35 3 980822 P3 ARS1 STD Note that this plan may change during the week. Orbit precession means that we have table naming confusion again - the convention is, the UT date of pass #1 determines the SXT table ID. Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to a typhoon) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). SSOC Tohban: On the weekly visible diagram, please mark the official five passes first and then cross out those passes that will be given to other satellites. That way we can keep the numbering straight in the Yohkoh software system. SSOC Tohban: SXT operations do not currently include terminator off- pointing. It is unnecessary this week to ask the SXT Chief Observer for terminator off-pointing information. KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, ie if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
