24 October 1998 David Mckenzie Hugh Hudson SXT CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT AND TABLE PLAN CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 43 19-Oct-98 to 24-Oct-98 GENERAL Yohkoh and SXT have performed well this week, despite continuing computer hiccups at the ground support station at Kagoshima. Solar activity was moderate, with a number of C flares. SXT TECHNICAL We will probably request a normal pointing update early this week. We intend to do a bakeout soon, probably next week. All of the SXT observer types will be up at Nobeyama. We intend to leave two tables on line Monday evening, and to request the KSC tohbans to transfer them according to the plan. We will be accessible at Tel: 0551-48-2111 (+81-551-48-2111) (Hotel Seisenryo) Fax: 0551-48-2099 (+81-551-48-2099) and will be logging on from a nearby radio observatory as need be. SXT SCIENCE For Web material see Current Week: http://www.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/SXTweekly.html Current Week: http://www.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/981023.html Index: http://www.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html This week brings the anniversary of the "Science Nuggets" webpage: one full year of Nuggets. The topic is a sigmoid-shaped active region that produced a halo CME, very similar to the very first Science Nugget of 24-Oct-97. CAMPAIGNS There were no formal campaigns this week. We stared at a target region in the northeast, to support TRACE's hopes of seeing an emerging flux region. PERSONNEL No changes. SEMINARS The seminar this week was given by T. Yoshida, who described the use of multiple analysis filters to determine the differential emission measure of plasma observed by SXT. Solution for the DEM in this way yields a somewhat different estimate of the plasma conditions than the standard filter ratio method. TABLE PLAN, WEEK 44 (26-Oct-98 -- 31-Oct-98) We look forward to synchronizing again with SOHO. There seem to be no coordinated observations planned yet for this week. _______________________________#_______________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Monday 26-Oct-98 08:09 2 981026 P2 ARS1 STD Tuesday 27-Oct-98 08:26 2 981027 P2 ARS1 DARKCAL Wednesday 28-Oct-98 07:00 2 981028 P2 ARS1 DIFF Thursday 29-Oct-98 05:35 1 981029 P1 ARS1 STD Friday 30-Oct-98 05:51 2 981030 P2 ARS1 STD Saturday 31-Oct-98 06:08 2 981031 P2 ARS1 STD This plan may change during the week. Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to a typhoon) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). SSOC Tohban: On the weekly visible diagram, please mark the official five passes first and then cross out those passes that will be given to other satellites. That way we can keep the numbering straight in the Yohkoh software system. SSOC Tohban: SXT operations do not currently include terminator off- pointing. It is unnecessary this week to ask the SXT Chief Observer for terminator off-pointing information. KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, ie if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
