07 November 1998 David Mckenzie SXT CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT AND TABLE PLAN CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 45 02-Nov-98 to 07-Nov-98 GENERAL Yohkoh and SXT have performed well this week. Solar activity was much higher than last week, with many flares coming from the large sheared region AR 8375. SXT TECHNICAL The bakeout was successful, although the images looked terrible (as they always do during a bakeout). SXT SCIENCE For Web material see Current Week: http://www.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/SXTweekly.html Current Week: http://www.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/981106.html Index: http://www.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html This week's Science Nugget describes the non-radial motions of ejecta from some of the flares observed this week. Several cases of material *not* moving vertically are documented. CAMPAIGNS We made some pointed observations to support Spartan, and saw some bright points in the northern polar region at the same time that Spartan was looking just above the north pole. PERSONNEL We had several visitors this week: Markus Aschwanden, Nicole Vilmer, Silja Pohjolainen, Brigitte Schmieder. Dick Canfield arrived for a two-week stay; Phil Shirts arrived; Hugh Hudson left at the end of the week. SEMINARS The seminar this week was presented by Brigitte Schmieder, who described modeling of the formation of solar filaments. A magnetohydrostatic model was discussed which seems to reproduce the structure of filaments and barbs quite well. DRAFT SXT TABLE PLAN, WEEK 46 (09-Nov-98 -- 14-Nov-98) ________________________________#_______________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Monday 9-NOV-98 01:48 2 981109 P2 ARS1 STD Tuesday 10-NOV-98 00:22 2 981109 P2 ARS1 DIFF 10-NOV-98 03:48 4 981109 P4 ARS1 DARKCAL Wednesday 11-NOV-98 00:38 2 981110 P2 ARS1 STD Thursday 11-NOV-98 23:12 2 981111 P2 ARS1 STD Friday 12-NOV-98 23:29 2 981112 P2 ARS1 STD Saturday 13-NOV-98 23:45 3 981113 P3 ARS1 STD This plan may change during the week. Note that there are three tables with a TABLE ID of 981109; this is because of the convention in which the TABLE ID is determined by the UT date of the first pass. Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to a typhoon) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). SSOC Tohban: On the weekly visible diagram, please mark the official five passes first and then cross out those passes that will be given to other satellites. That way we can keep the numbering straight in the Yohkoh software system. SSOC Tohban: SXT operations do not currently include terminator off- pointing. It is unnecessary this week to ask the SXT Chief Observer for terminator off-pointing information. KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, ie if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
