16 November 1998 David McKenzie SXT CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT AND TABLE PLAN CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 46 09-Nov-98 to 14-Nov-98 GENERAL Yohkoh and SXT have performed well this week. Solar activity was almost as high as last week. SXT observed several compact-type flares, and some apparent eruption events. SXT TECHNICAL No problems to report. Continued planning for Leonid meteor event. We will want to make a normal pointing update soon, either late this week or early next week. SXT SCIENCE For Web material see Current Week: http://www.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/SXTweekly.html Current Week: http://www.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/981113.html Index: http://www.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html This week's Science Nugget describes repeated brightenings observed in loop associated with a flare on 13-Nov-98. Three brightenings were observed approximately six minutes apart, nearly evenly spaced in time. CAMPAIGNS There were no coordinated campaigns this week. PERSONNEL Henry Aurass arrived for a visit; Dick Canfield returned to Montana at the end of the week. SEMINARS There was no seminar this week. DRAFT SXT TABLE PLAN, WEEK 47 (16-Nov-98 -- 21-Nov-98) There is no coordinated observation campaign scheduled for this week. Yohkoh will make some special operations Tuesday in anticipation of possible encounter with Leonid meteors. SXT will continue to observe, but with some precautions to compensate for the temporary disabling of flare mode. ________________________________#_______________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Tuesday 16-NOV-98 22:52 3 981116 P3 ARS1 DARK+LEO Wednesday 18-NOV-98 00:52 4 981117 P4 ARS1 STD+LEO ? This plan may change again during the week, particularly because of possible changes to our Leonids plan. In particular, the Wednesday table upload may be moved to Pass 3, if extra time is required in Pass 4 for HV actions. Note that some Table IDs do not appear to match the UT start dates (Tuesday and Wednesday). This is because of the convention in which the Table ID is determined by the UT date of the first pass of the day. Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to a typhoon) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). SSOC Tohban: On the weekly visible diagram, please mark the official five passes first and then cross out those passes that will be given to other satellites. That way we can keep the numbering straight in the Yohkoh software system. SSOC Tohban: SXT operations do not currently include terminator off- pointing. It is unnecessary this week to ask the SXT Chief Observer for terminator off-pointing information. KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, ie if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
