21 November 1998 David McKenzie Hugh Hudson Nariaki Nitta SXT CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT AND TABLE PLAN CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 47 16-Nov-98 to 21-Nov-98 GENERAL Yohkoh and SXT have performed well this week. Solar activity had been low until an X3 flare occurred at AR 8384 (start 22-Nov-98 06:30 UT, peak 06:42 UT). Yohkoh was not in daylight until 06:35 UT. SXT TECHNICAL No problems to report. The Leonids came and went, although Yohkoh appeared not to notice the event. We will request an update to the normal pointing this week. SXT SCIENCE For Web material see Current Week: http://www.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/SXTweekly.html Current Week: http://www.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/981120.html Index: http://www.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html This week's Science Nugget describes ``Hideous daily difference image.'' CAMPAIGNS Over the weekend we made some fixed-pointing images of active regions in the southwest, to support TRACE observations. PERSONNEL Nariaki Nitta arrived at the beginning of the week. Phil Shirts returned to the US at the end of the week; Hugh Hudson returned to Japan. Lidia van Driel has been visiting. SEMINARS There was no seminar this week. DRAFT SXT TABLE PLAN, WEEK 48 (23-Nov-98 -- 29-Nov-98) Later in the week, as plans congeal, we will try to match a planned CDS program. ________________________________#_______________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Monday 22-NOV-98 21:06 3 981122 P3 ARS1 DARKCAL Tuesday 23-NOV-98 17:58 2 981123 P2 ARS1 DIFF+CDS Tuesday 23-NOV-98 21:23 4 981123 P4 ARS1 DIFF Wednesday 24-NOV-98 18:14 2 981124 P2 ARS1 STD+CDS Thursday 25-NOV-98 16:48 2 981125 P2 ARS1 CDS Thursday 25-NOV-98 20:14 4 981125 P4 ARS1 STD Friday 26-NOV-98 17:05 2 981126 P2 ARS1 CDS Friday 26-NOV-98 20:30 4 981126 P4 ARS1 STD Saturday 27-NOV-98 17:21 2 981127 P2 ARS1 STD Sunday 28-NOV-98 15:55 2 981128 P2 ARS1 STD Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to a typhoon) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). SSOC Tohban: On the weekly visible diagram, please mark the official five passes first and then cross out those passes that will be given to other satellites. That way we can keep the numbering straight in the Yohkoh software system. SSOC Tohban: SXT operations do not currently include terminator off- pointing. It is unnecessary this week to ask the SXT Chief Observer for terminator off-pointing information. KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, ie if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
